Taking a break and a rant

The last couple days have been windy out here on the mesa. We did have a couple campers come in during it all, very nice people and we enjoyed visiting and helping them to do few small repairs.

Last Saturday was the April Fool’s Open Mic, that morning Brent and I went out to put up signs, to help direct people out. Just about a mile from our place we found a tent set up on land owned by a neighbor we’ve become friends with, that lives in another state for now, but does come visit his land regularly.

Many people think the land up here is BLM land (This is what this person stated he thought it was). It’s not, it’s all privately owned. If you are looking for places to camp for a bit, come talk to us, we may figure something out. If you do plan to squat do some research first. Some land owners are very (rightfully) protective of their land. We did not run this tenter off, we just highly recommended that he move off that land, which he did.

Many towns people come up here to watch the sunset, see stars, catch the views or travel all the dirt roads. This is fine to do, but we have issues with a few 4wheeler operators going down private roads, cutting through private and marked property, dumping trash or household garbage and tossing beer bottles on the roads. This land isn’t a landfill, pack out your trash! Take your junk to be recycled or to a designated landfill! Come enjoy the views, drive your 4wheelers, picnic, but do it with respect. We don’t go riding through your yard and dumping our trash, or chase after your dogs (that’s rightfully on your property).

Well that’s my rant.. We might be a little quieter this week than normal. We are trying to take a few days off from projects, and events. We plan to enjoy Easter here and hang out with some friends and try not to think about events and projects. Next week we’ll be right back to getting ready for the Nomad Gathering in the Desert !

Until then make sure to visit our website, we still will be available to answer questions. We still have some availability for vendors..

We do have a slight schedule change/inclusion. Saturday May 20th, we may have BINGO. We are thinking of doing it at 1:30pm. Buy in per card is yet to be determined. Prizes to be determined by cards sold.

Let us know what you think a good cost per card is.

Also Saturday night the 20th will be live music by Jer Killinger Singer/Songwriter and J5th & the 77 Riders .

We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful week!!!

What living off-grid in the desert at Plateau Hame De Colquhoun means.

What does living in the middle of the desert off grid mean? It means dealing with the weather, heat, wild life, lack of running water. It means camping 24/7. Problem I have now if I want to vacation I don’t enjoy going camping like I used to. Vacation to me is a running water, flush toilet oh and shower all under the same roof.

But the question is do I miss it? It’s good for a vacation but most of the time I don’t mind using it. I don’t mind going out and using the “hut” as we call it( a compost toilet in a small tin building). We have running water (5 gallon water jugs with a hand pump) showers are located at planet fitness,

I used to be able to tell you what was on TV on any given night, now I rarely watch TV. We tend to spend evenings sitting outside, our TV is the sunset. We spend more time with other people, then we did when we lived in town. In town we didn’t know our neighbors. Here we hang out, help, check in on all our neighbors, we are a family.

Living out here is hard, it will test you, it’s not for the faint of heart. There’s been times we’ve thought about quitting, but in the end we love it.

Living Tiny isn’t a Facade.

Since we started living tiny weather it being in a house or RV full time 4 yrs ago. One thing we’ve noticed is that tiny living isn’t exempted from a “keeping up with the Jones attitude”. Tiny living isn’t about a facade, or “I have something better than you”. It’s about being yourself, living minimal using what you have. Not about how much money you spend, or out doing someone.
Just defeats the purpose of it all.

Memories

One of our personal requirements is that we have to “get” something from any place we stop for the night and any thing we do that we consider special. Each item is placed within the sketch book in the video. We try for stickers, brochures.. But we’ve acquired post cards, pieces of sticks, or tooth picks, even shells and a pecan we found on the ground at a Loves we stayed at.

Share some of the things you may do while on your trip, the quirkier the better.

Traveling at night

It’s now 2:00 in the morning and we are back on the road heading to our next stop. It’s a short jump this time and can’t check in until noon. Which means we’ll need to find a spot before hand to get few more hours of sleep before going onto our next location.

We’d like to share a few pros and cons for traveling this time of day..

PROS

Less traffic, road workers.

Roads are cooler easier on tires.

Better fuel mileage less likely to be stuck in traffic.

Most bars have closed, which means most drunks should be off the road by this time.

Gives you more daylight time at your destination.

Security of resting at a location during daylight.

CONS

Visibilities..

Wildlife.. we tend to travel at this time to bypass a major city and usually on major roads.. When traveling other areas we like early mornings just after day break.

Check in times tend to be later in the day. So you may need to find a spot to park a few hours.

Finding a spot to park can be both Pro and Con.. We tend to park before 5 in the evening.. which usually means we have no issue finding a spot.

BUT if check in isn’t until later you will need to find a place to park closer to your destination which means trying to find a spot during worse times.

Breakdowns, stops for supplies most locations are closed. Simple maintenance may need to wait for a store to open.

We’d like to hear your experiences, how do you like to travel..
