šæ Why People Are Choosing Off-Grid Life
š Freedom from Systems
Less dependency on utilities and infrastructure
More control over daily life
A shift toward independence and simplicity
š Connection to Land
Living closer to nature
Understanding weather, soil, and survival skills
Building a direct relationship with your environment
Welcome to todayās Campfire Chat hosted by Colquhoun Entertainment.
This conversation is about something most people only realize after they buy land:
š Does your land actually support your dream?
Many people enter land ownership with a vision of freedom, sustainability, and off-grid independenceābut reality often reshapes that dream in unexpected ways.
š± THE DREAM VS REALITY OF LAND OWNERSHIP
Most land buyers imagine:
Big gardens and food independence
Animals and livestock
Privacy and open space
Off-grid self-sufficiency
Workshops and creative freedom
But real land conditions often include:
Poor or rocky soil
Wind exposure and climate challenges
Water access limitations
Distance from supplies and towns
Infrastructure costs most people donāt expect
š REALITY CHECK: NOT ALL LAND IS EQUAL
Even beautiful land can come with hidden challenges.
On our own mesa land, we experience:
Incredible panoramic views
Wide open space and freedom
Strong winds and dry conditions
Soil that requires constant adaptation
This doesnāt make the land ābadāā it means the lifestyle must evolve with the environment.
š THE SHIFT IN THINKING
Instead of asking:
ā āWhat is my dream land?ā
Ask this instead:
ā āWhat kind of life do I actually want?ā ā āDoes my land support that lifestyle?ā
This small mindset shift changes everything about land ownership success.
š¬ QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER
If you bought land today, what would you prioritize first?
Does your land support your dreamāor challenge it?
What surprised you most after moving onto your property?

Off-Grid Living Reality: What People Donāt See Behind the Quiet Views
Off-grid life is often pictured as peaceful sunrises, quiet evenings, and a slower pace. And in many ways, thatās true. But thereās another side to living on rural land that doesnāt always make it into photos and short videos.
The work is constant. The responsibility never pauses. And when health changes unexpectedly, the entire rhythm of life on the land has to adjust.
This is a look at what that season really feels like.
The Physical Reality of Homestead and Off-Grid Work
Living off-grid means:
Hauling, lifting, building, repairing
Long hours outside in the elements
Solving problems without quick access to help
Constant maintenance of land, furry kids, and structures
Itās rewarding workābut itās demanding work. Over time, that physical demand adds up in ways you donāt always notice right away.
When Exhaustion Isnāt āJust Part of the Workā
For a long time, itās easy to assume fatigue is simply part of the lifestyle. After all, off-grid and homestead living isnāt meant to be easy.
But sometimes:
Fatigue becomes deeper than normal tiredness
Recovery takes longer than it should
Symptoms start to stack instead of fade
Thatās when you realize something else may be going on beyond the workload itself.
The Hardest Part: The Unknown
Doctor visits, tests, imaging, and waiting for answers create a different kind of strain.
Not knowing:
Whatās connected
Whatās temporary
What needs to change
ā¦can be harder than the physical symptoms themselves.
Especially when your entire life is built around physical capability and daily hands-on work.
Adjusting the Pace Without Giving Up the Life
One of the biggest lessons in this season has been learning that slowing down doesnāt mean quitting.
It means:
Prioritizing energy carefully
Choosing what truly needs to be done each day
Letting go of the idea that everything must be done at once
Accepting a different pace without losing the purpose
The land is still here. The life is still here. It just looks different right now.
Off-Grid Life Is a Love-Hate Relationship
Thereās deep love for this lifestyle. But thereās also honesty in admitting:
It can be physically overwhelming
It demands more than most people realize
It exposes health limitations quickly
It requires constant adaptation
And thatās part of the reality rarely talked about.
Still Moving Forward, Just Differently
This season isnāt about dramatic change. Itās about quiet adjustment.
Still living on the land. Still building. Still moving forward.
Just at a pace that matches what life requires right now.

Sorry weāve been a little quieter lately. Even our morning off-grid campfire chats ā where we share experiences and try to help others considering this lifestyle ā have been harder for me to keep up with. And I truly love helping people.
Off-grid life is raw, real, and full of lessons. It isnāt always easy, but it teaches resilience, patience, and the importance of community.
Brentās Stroke Recovery and Our Journey
Many of you know that a year ago, Brent (Advocatus Diaboli) suffered a cluster of strokes. Itās been a long road back, but heās doing it ā and I couldnāt love him more.
His recovery has taught us the value of perseverance, hope, and celebrating small victories in life, especially while living off-grid.
My Health Struggles: Pituitary Macroadenoma
Recently, Iāve been experiencing intense headaches and eye pain. Doctors initially suspected trigeminal neuralgia and sent me to a neurologist. While the MRI didnāt show much for the nerve, it revealed a pituitary macroadenoma, a tumor on the pituitary gland.
About 90% of pituitary macroadenomas are benign, but they can still affect hormone function. This discovery led to more bloodwork, a referral to an endocrinologist, and additional testing. So far, results indicate my immune system may be attacking my thyroid, and my pituitary gland
Upcoming Tests and What They Mean
This week, I have a more detailed pituitary MRI and a thyroid ultrasound. After these tests, weāll better understand my treatment plan. While the waiting is stressful, everything we know so far is treatable. Surgery may be necessary, but it is not overly invasive, according to doctors.
Life Lessons: Truthfulness and Positivity
I am not seeking attention ā Iām trying to be truthful. Life off-grid isnāt easy. We donāt sugarcoat our experiences. We all face trauma, health issues, and personal struggles. Living off-grid doesnāt exempt us from that reality.
In a world full of negativity, we aim to offer a space of positivity ā a place where you can be yourself. We donāt judge your sexuality, religion, or political views. Your life is yours to live.
We share more in our lives than on social media, and our goal is to help others while helping ourselves. These are just hurdles we have to jump (without breaking a leg, as I canāt jump š ).
Finding Peace: Sunsets and Perspective
When life throws you a curveball, stop, take a breath, watch the sunset, and enjoy the moment. These reflective pauses help us find clarity and peace, even in the midst of health challenges and uncertainty.
We continue forward. Weāre here if you need support, have questions, are looking for a place, or just want someone to talk to ā or listen to our music.
Before all this, I had only heard the word āpituitary.ā I had no idea how much it controls in the body.
Today, Iām sharing a peaceful desert sunset ā a small reminder that while life can be serious, there is still beauty, hope, and resilience.
Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert sounds simple from the outside.
Open land. Quiet surroundings. Freedom.
But the reality is something very different.
The desert has its own rulesāand it doesnāt adjust for anyone.
The wind alone can change everything. It doesnāt just blowāit pushes, rattles, and tests everything youāve built. Some nights, it sounds like itās trying to tear things apart.
Then thereās the temperature.
Summers regularly hit the high 90s and 100s, and on some days, even push as high as 120. The sun is constant and intense, even in the winter, drying everything out and burning through anything left exposed.
The ground itself holds that heat. Sand can get so hot you feel it through your shoes. Walking barefoot in the summer? Thatās a mistake most people only make once.
And the sand doesnāt stay outside.
On windy days, it moves through everythingāgetting into your eyes, ears, nose, and somehow making its way inside your home no matter what you do. Out here, thereās no such thing as completely keeping it out.
Winter brings a different kind of challenge.
Contrary to what many expect, the desert isnāt always warm. Temperatures drop into the teens, sometimes even single digits. Snow does happen. Cold is real hereāand it demands preparation.
Then thereās the quiet.
For some, itās peaceful. For others, itās overwhelming. Out here, silence isnāt just the absence of noiseāitās something you feel.
People come out here for different reasons.
Some come prepared, ready to learn, adapt, and respect the environment. They understand that off-grid living comes with a constant learning curve.
Others come expecting it to be easyāand quickly realize itās not.
And then there are those who come to get away from something. Depending on what theyāre running from, that can bring its own set of challenges.
At the end of the day, off-grid living in the desert isnāt about comfort.
Itās about reality.
Itās about adapting, learning, and continuing forward no matter what the environment throws at you.
Itās not for everyone.
But for those who choose it, thereās nothing else like it.
Sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel is just a crazy person with a torch⦠but hey, at least it aināt boring!
Here at Plateau Hame de Colquhoun, life off-grid teaches us that inspiration doesnāt always arrive politely on schedule. Some days, the universe sends it with a wink, a spark, or a little chaos ā like our Thursday quote reminds us.

A Thursday Reminder
Life isnāt always predictable.
The light at the end of the tunnel might be unconventional.
Laugh at the chaos, and keep moving forward.
This Thursday, Feb 19, 2026, take a moment to appreciate the quirky sparks of inspiration in your life. Whether itās a wild idea, a sudden insight, or just the desert sunset reminding you that everything is impermanent, find joy in the unexpected.
