Desert Outlaw Cats Fish & Smig Share a Sweet Moment in the New Mexico Desert | Wild West Adventure

🐾 Two Little Desert Outlaws: Fish & Smig

Out in the wide-open New Mexico desert, two unlikely little outlaws are making their rounds. šŸ¤ šŸŒµšŸˆšŸˆā€ā¬›

Fish and Smig walk side-by-side through the desert like they own the whole territory. With the sound of the Wild West playing in the background, their stroll looks like something straight out of an old cowboy movie.

But then they reach the camera…

And these two tough little desert cats suddenly stop their adventure for a sweet moment of kitty affection. ā¤ļøšŸ¾

🤠 When Wild West Meets Desert Cat Life

Fish and Smig may look like they’re heading out on an important desert mission, but their unexpected stop shows another side of life in the desert.

They pause beside the camera, cuddle up, and love each other up before continuing their journey.

It’s one of those completely unscripted moments that makes off-grid living and desert life so special.

No fancy production. No staged scene.

Just two cats, a desert, and a little love.

🌵 Life With Cats in the New Mexico Desert

Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert means sharing our surroundings with animals, wildlife, and plenty of unexpected moments.

Fish and Smig are part of that everyday desert life. Their adventures can take them wandering across the property, exploring their surroundings, and occasionally stopping by to see what the humans—and the camera—are doing.

This video captures one of those simple moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Two cats walking together.

A Wild West soundtrack.

And a little affection in the middle of the desert.

Sometimes that’s all you need. ā¤ļø

🐈 Meet the Desert Outlaws: Fish & Smig

Fish and Smig have their own personalities, but together they make quite the pair.

Watching them walk together through the desert almost makes it look like they’re heading off to settle some unfinished business in an old Western town. 🤠

Then comes the plot twist:

Instead of a showdown, we get a kitty love scene. 😻

šŸ¤Ž The Sweetest Moments Are Often Unplanned

Some of the best moments aren’t planned at all.

Fish and Smig weren’t performing for the camera. They were simply being themselves—walking together, stopping near the camera, and sharing affection.

That’s what makes this little desert adventure worth capturing.

In the middle of the rugged landscape, there’s still room for friendship, companionship, and love.

šŸŒŖļø Dust Devil Hits the Dusty Nail: New Mexico Whirlwind Heads Toward Campers

A sudden dust devil, or desert whirlwind, swept across Ka-Hoon Campground in New Mexico, heading directly toward the Dusty Nail and a nearby camper encampment. The swirling column of dust moved across the property before passing through the area.

Thankfully, nothing noticeable was harmed.

What Is a Dust Devil?

A dust devil is a rotating column of air that forms near the ground, usually on hot, dry days. Dust devils are common in desert environments because the ground can become extremely hot under strong sunlight.

The process begins when the sun heats the ground unevenly. The surface warms the air immediately above it, causing that hot air to rise quickly. If there is some existing rotation or wind interaction near the surface, the rising air can begin spinning.

As the rotating air column strengthens, it can pull dust and loose particles from the ground upward. This creates the familiar visible whirlwind or dust devil.

How Is a Dust Devil Different From a Tornado?

Although they can look dramatic, dust devils are not simply small tornadoes.

Most tornadoes develop in association with powerful thunderstorms and involve a rotating storm system. Dust devils generally develop from surface heating and localized atmospheric conditions, often underneath otherwise clear or mostly clear skies.

Their size, strength, speed and lifespan can vary considerably. Some are small and disappear almost immediately, while stronger ones can travel across open terrain and kick up substantial amounts of dust.

A Whirlwind Heads Toward the Campers

This particular dust devil developed in the New Mexico desert and moved toward the Dusty Nail, appearing to head directly toward a camper encampment.

For anyone camping or living in an off-grid desert environment, a rapidly moving dust devil is definitely something worth watching. Even when one doesn’t cause damage, the combination of strong swirling winds, blowing dust and loose objects can create a dangerous situation.

Fortunately, this whirlwind passed through without anything noticeable being damaged.

Just another unexpected moment in New Mexico desert life. šŸœļøšŸŒŖļø

Have you ever seen a dust devil this close to a campground or campsite?

The Monsoon Arrives: First Real Rain Hits the New Mexico Desert | Off-Grid Storm Adventure at Plateau Hame De Colquhoun

The Monsoon Arrives: First Real Rain Hits the New Mexico Desert

After months of extreme heat, dry conditions, and the relentless New Mexico desert sun, the skies have finally opened. The first real rain of the year has arrived at Plateau Hame De Colquhoun, marking the beginning of monsoon season on the mesa.

For those living off-grid, rain is more than just weather—it is a moment of change. The sound of rain hitting the desert, the smell of wet earth, and the transformation of the landscape remind us how powerful and important every storm can be.

This is the beginning of our monsoon journey as we document the storms, the calm between weather systems, and the way the desert comes alive after rainfall.

The First Monsoon Storm of the Year

The first major storm of the season arrived with powerful energy. Dark clouds rolled across the New Mexico desert, winds moved through the mesa, and much-needed rain began falling across the land.

After weeks of intense summer heat, the cooler air and rainfall brought a welcome change. The desert, which can appear quiet and still during dry periods, begins to transform when the monsoon arrives.

During monsoon season, we experience:

  • Dramatic desert storm clouds
  • Powerful rain and changing weather patterns
  • Cooler temperatures after extreme heat
  • New life returning to the landscape
  • The challenges and rewards of off-grid living

At Plateau Hame De Colquhoun, every storm becomes part of the story of living with the land.

  • Off-grid living during extreme weather
  • The beauty of New Mexico desert storms

A Break Between Storms: The Calm Before the Next Wave

After the first storm moved through, we entered a brief break between storms.

The desert became quiet again, but the skies showed signs that more weather was on the way. These moments between storms are some of the most beautiful parts of desert living—the cooler air, the changing clouds, and the anticipation of the next rainfall.

Monsoon season in New Mexico is unpredictable. One moment the desert can be dry and still, and the next it can be filled with thunder, wind, and rain.

This constant change is what makes desert life so unique.

Watch the Break Between Storms

Join us during a peaceful moment between storms as we watch monsoon season continue across the New Mexico desert.

Living Off-Grid During Monsoon Season

Off-grid living means being connected to the environment around us. Weather affects our daily routines, solar power, outdoor projects, animals, and life on the mesa.

Rain brings challenges, but it also brings appreciation.

Every storm reminds us why we chose this lifestyle:

  • To experience nature firsthand
  • To protect and preserve the land
  • To build a community connected to the desert
  • To appreciate the simple moments that many people never see

Off-Grid Living in New Mexico Desert | Real Life at Colquhoun Entertainment

Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert sounds simple from the outside.

Open land. Quiet surroundings. Freedom.

But the reality is something very different.

The desert has its own rules—and it doesn’t adjust for anyone.

The wind alone can change everything. It doesn’t just blow—it pushes, rattles, and tests everything you’ve built. Some nights, it sounds like it’s trying to tear things apart.

Then there’s the temperature.

Summers regularly hit the high 90s and 100s, and on some days, even push as high as 120. The sun is constant and intense, even in the winter, drying everything out and burning through anything left exposed.

The ground itself holds that heat. Sand can get so hot you feel it through your shoes. Walking barefoot in the summer? That’s a mistake most people only make once.

And the sand doesn’t stay outside.

On windy days, it moves through everything—getting into your eyes, ears, nose, and somehow making its way inside your home no matter what you do. Out here, there’s no such thing as completely keeping it out.

Winter brings a different kind of challenge.

Contrary to what many expect, the desert isn’t always warm. Temperatures drop into the teens, sometimes even single digits. Snow does happen. Cold is real here—and it demands preparation.

Then there’s the quiet.

For some, it’s peaceful. For others, it’s overwhelming. Out here, silence isn’t just the absence of noise—it’s something you feel.

People come out here for different reasons.

Some come prepared, ready to learn, adapt, and respect the environment. They understand that off-grid living comes with a constant learning curve.

Others come expecting it to be easy—and quickly realize it’s not.

And then there are those who come to get away from something. Depending on what they’re running from, that can bring its own set of challenges.

At the end of the day, off-grid living in the desert isn’t about comfort.

It’s about reality.

It’s about adapting, learning, and continuing forward no matter what the environment throws at you.

It’s not for everyone.

But for those who choose it, there’s nothing else like it.

Desert Dogs Take Over Off-Grid Life! You Won’t Believe What They Do Every Day!

**Desert Dog Chronicles: Life With Our Off-Grid Canine Crew**

Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert brings a mix of peace, chaos, wildlife, and plenty of four-legged entertainment. Our dogs have become masters of desert life, each with a personality that adds something unique to our days. From patrol duties to playtime to dealing with unexpected nighttime visitors, every day is its own adventure.

## **Meet the Desert Crew**

### **Dreugan – The Commander**

Dreugan is the leader of the group, the one who takes charge, keeps watch, and makes sure everyone is doing exactly what they *should* be doing… even if they rarely are. He oversees everything with a seriousness that makes the rest of the chaos even funnier.

### **Vibria – The Fearless Powerhouse**

Vibria may be young, but she’s strong, fast, and muscled up—a true desert athlete. She barrels across the sand with confidence, taking on bushes, wind, odd noises, and imaginary threats with equal enthusiasm. Nothing scares her, and nothing slows her down.

### **Lurch – The Proper Gentleman**

Lurch approaches desert life with elegance, caution, and a surprising amount of politeness. Whether he’s stepping over rocks or weaving through brush, he does it like he’s wearing an evening coat and should not be soiled.

### **Persephone – The Ball Enthusiast**

Persephone has one mission in life: **her ball**. She doesn’t dig, wander, or chase after desert creatures. Instead, she sits in perfect focus, waiting for playtime. The world could fall apart around her, and she would still be locked onto that ball like it holds the secrets of the universe.

## **Daily Life in the Desert**

Each day begins with energy, excitement, and the dogs bursting into the outdoors like it’s their personal playground. Dreugan immediately takes charge of patrol, Vibria launches into high-speed adventures, Lurch attempts to stay clean and composed, and Persephone waits patiently for someone—anyone—to throw that ball.

The desert gives them plenty to investigate: shifting scents, rustling brush, birds overhead, and the occasional coyote strolling by. It’s a never-ending landscape of curiosity, freedom, and fun.

## **Nighttime Visitors: The Free-Range Bulls**

When evening falls, the desert comes alive in a very different way. New Mexico is a free-range state, meaning cattle can roam anywhere in their designated range unless fenced out. That includes right by our home—something we’re perfectly fine with.

The bulls especially seem to enjoy our area. Some nights they challenge each other, bellowing, hollering, and wrestling until sunrise. It’s loud, chaotic, and very much part of our off-grid life.

The dogs take it all in stride. Dreugan stays alert, Vibria watches with interest, Lurch keeps a respectful distance, and Persephone continues to focus entirely on her ball.

## **Life Off-Grid Brings Stories Worth Sharing**

Living in the desert with this crew means there’s always something happening—unexpected visitors, playful chaos, and moments of pure comedy. Our dogs love the space to run, explore, and express their personalities in ways only the desert can inspire.

Every day here brings a new story, and these four make sure it’s never boring.

Why Cattle Keep Visiting Our Home—Life in a New Mexico Free-Range State Explained!

Why the Cattle Keep Visiting Our House — Life in a Free-Range State**

*(Off-Grid Talk from Plateau Hame De Colquhoun)*

If you’ve ever watched our **Offgrid Talk** videos or tuned in to **Music in the Desert**, you already know that living out here at **Plateau Hame De Colquhoun** comes with some surprises. But one of the questions we get most often—especially on TikTok—is:

**ā€œWhy are there cattle at your house?ā€**

Fair question.
And the answer is simple:

### **We live in New Mexico… a free-range state.**

That means cattle are free to roam in their designated grazing areas, and unless *we* put up fencing (which we really don’t want to), the cows are basically allowed to drop by whenever they feel like it.

And trust me—they *do*.

## **Why the Cows Love Our Place**

We’re not a fancy resort.
We’re not serving cow snacks.
We don’t even have cow Wi-Fi (yet).

But the cattle absolutely adore the same things that bring you and me joy:

* Solar cameras
* Solar lights
* Motion sensors
* Anything with a blinky light
* Anything that beeps
* Anything that looks even slightly expensive

If it glows, flashes, or makes a sound… they’re going to investigate it.

Some people fight off raccoons.
Some people fight off squirrels.
We fight off **solar-loving cows** who try to boop the cameras at **Ka-Hoon Campground** like they’re testing out new technology.

Honestly?
They’re better security guards than any alarm system.

## **Life at Ka-Hoon Campground**

Living beside free-range cattle is just part of the charm here.
Between the cows, coyotes, jack rabbits, the animatronic chaos of **Advocatus Diaboli** and the **Grim Leafer Band**, and the unusual acts booked through **Melodie’s Oddities**, there’s never a dull moment.

Throw in the desert sound work from **Jafo Productions**, a few off-grid challenges, and nightly entertainment through **Colquhoun Entertainment**, and you’ve got a life that’s unpredictable—but always full of stories.

So if the cattle walk by our cameras, nosing around like they’re auditioning for a desert reality show…
that’s just life at **Plateau Hame De Colquhoun**.

And we wouldn’t change it.

Freedom Runs: Our Dogs Living Their Best Desert Life šŸ•šŸŒµ

Out here at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center, even our four-legged friends get to enjoy the wide-open desert life. When the weather’s good and the sun starts dipping low, we let the dogs stretch their legs outside the pen — and they *love* it.

There’s something magical about watching them chase each other across the sand, barking with excitement, the wind in their fur and the mountains in the distance. Living off-grid means we all appreciate the simple things — like a good run, a soft breeze, and the laughter that follows.

The dogs remind us daily that freedom doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s about being present, feeling the earth beneath your feet (or paws), and loving every moment of it. 🐾
