This morning started as a simple attempt to investigate Vibriaās growing off-grid desert den project⦠but the dogs clearly had other plans šš¾
The mission quickly turned chaotic:
Lurch started kicking sand directly toward the den
Dreugan blocked the camera carrying a toy
Vibria pounced before a clear view was possible
At this point, the underground build feels completely top secret.
š CURRENT VIEWER THEORIES
Some of the creative theories viewers have suggested include:
šµ A doorway to an underground city
š A hidden desert pool
š¾ A canine cave system
š An underground dog party getaway
Now we want to hear YOUR theories.

Across the wide open landscapes of the New Mexico desert, many people dream about living differently. They imagine quiet nights under the stars, freedom from the constant rush of modern life, and the chance to reconnect with nature, creativity, and community.
For some, that dream begins with the idea of living off-grid.
But anyone who has spent time in the desert knows the truth: the desert has its own personality. The wind can arrive without warning, the silence can feel enormous, and figuring everything out alone can quickly become overwhelming.
Thatās why communities like Plateau Hame de Colquhoun exist.
Located in the wide open desert landscape, Plateau Hame de Colquhoun brings together people interested in alternative lifestyles, creative expression, music, and community learning. Instead of trying to figure out everything alone, members share knowledge, experiences, and ideas while exploring a different way of living.
At Plateau Hame de Colquhoun, the focus isnāt just about land or buildings. Itās about people.
Members gather to share music, conversations, and creativity around campfires and under desert skies. Musicians, artists, thinkers, and curious individuals all bring their own perspectives and talents, creating a unique environment where learning happens naturally through community interaction.
The desert itself becomes part of the experience. Sunsets stretch across the horizon, the night sky fills with stars, and the quiet space allows people to slow down and connect with each other in meaningful ways.
For many members, the experience is about rediscovering the simple joy of gathering together. A guitar appears, someone tells a story, someone else shares a new idea, and the community grows stronger with every conversation.
Plateau Hame de Colquhoun is not about fitting into a predefined box. Instead, it welcomes people who are curious, creative, and interested in exploring new ways of living, thinking, and creating.
Some members come for the music. Some come for the community. Some come simply because the desert calls to them.
Whatever brings them here, they often discover that the most valuable part of the experience is the people they meet along the way.
In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, places like Plateau Hame de Colquhoun remind us that community, creativity, and shared experiences still matter.
Sometimes the best thing you can find in the desert isnāt land or silence.
Itās people gathered around a fire, sharing music and stories beneath a sky full of stars.

Freedom Runs: Our Dogs Living Their Best Desert Life ššµ
Out here at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center, even our four-legged friends get to enjoy the wide-open desert life. When the weatherās good and the sun starts dipping low, we let the dogs stretch their legs outside the pen ā and they *love* it.
Thereās something magical about watching them chase each other across the sand, barking with excitement, the wind in their fur and the mountains in the distance. Living off-grid means we all appreciate the simple things ā like a good run, a soft breeze, and the laughter that follows.
The dogs remind us daily that freedom doesnāt have to be complicated. Itās about being present, feeling the earth beneath your feet (or paws), and loving every moment of it. š¾
Finding Connection Off the Grid ā A Memorial Day Reflection
As we pause this Memorial Day to honor those who gave their lives in service to our country, we also want to take a moment to express heartfelt gratitude to our growing off-grid community. From our remote corner of the New Mexico desert, we send you all peace, love, and strength.
Last nightās **Open Microphone Night** was one for the books. Under the stars and surrounded by the raw beauty of the land, we gatheredāsingers, storytellers, musicians, and listeners alikeāto share not just talent, but pieces of our hearts. We laughed, we sang, we reflected, and most importantly, we connected.
One of the most powerful parts of living off-grid isnāt just the freedomāitās the **community**. Itās in the late-night conversations around the fire, the shared meals, and the support from others walking the same path. Whether you’re homesteading, boondocking, or just finding your own rhythm outside the noise of the mainstream, you are part of something real.
We know this lifestyle isnāt always easy. But moments like last night remind us why we do it: for **authenticity**, for **connection**, for **freedom**.
So from our camp to yoursā**Happy Memorial Day**. May we honor those who came before us by living with purpose, courage, and heart.
On Wednesday, Sept 4, we rescued Vibria, a tiny pup found with two other female puppies who had been dumped on Cahoon Street in Roswell, NM. It felt like fate. That same morning, I was reflecting on a memory of Litha, our black lab/golden retriever mix who passed nearly two years ago from cancer. While looking at the pictures, I got a notification about the three puppies needing homes. It was serendipitousāCahoon Street shares the same pronunciation as Colquhoun, the name of our campground.
At first, it didnāt seem possible to go and get her because I had a doctor’s appointment. But just as I was about to let the person know we couldnāt make it, the doctorās office called to cancel! That was the sign we needed. We hopped in the car, made the three-hour drive, and brought Vibria home.
Now, six weeks later, sheās settled into her new life. We estimate sheās around 14 weeks old, and although sheās tiny at about 7-8 lbs, sheās full of energy and mischief. She adores cuddles, plays with the cats, and even tries to play with Dreuganāthough she usually runs and hides when his play gets too rambunctious. Vibria is fearless and has proven herself to be an escape artist, climbing fences when weāre not looking.
We picked up a cheap harness from a thrift store, unsure of how big sheāll get, and she proudly wears it along with her new collar. Surprisingly, she even gets upset when itās taken off!
Stay tuned to follow Vibriaās adventures as she lives her best life off-grid in the New Mexico desert!
**Embracing New Beginnings in Our Desert Community**
Today marks the first day in months that we don’t have a camper staying with us, and the place feels a bit empty. However, it’s a good kind of empty, filled with the warmth of friendships made and the excitement of new beginnings.
The camper who just checked out came to us when they transferred from their old job at an Amazon distribution center in Colorado to the new Amazon distribution center in Los Lunas. During their stay, they became more than just guestsāthey became friends. Our little community here in the desert grew to know and appreciate them, and weāre thrilled to hear that theyāve fallen in love with the area just as much as we have.
Theyāre not going far, eitherātheyāre in the process of buying some land not too far from us. So, while it might feel like a goodbye, itās really just a āsee you soon.ā Weāre excited to officially welcome them as permanent members of our growing community. Here in the desert, itās never really goodbye; itās more of a āwelcome home.ā
