🎶 Music in the Desert | Live Off-Grid Studio Livestream at Ka-Hoon Campground
Music doesn’t need city lights or corporate studios to be powerful.
**Music in the Desert** is a live livestream music show broadcast directly from our **off-grid music studio** at **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun (Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center)** in the New Mexico desert. Built with intention, powered off-grid, and fueled by creativity, this studio is where raw sound meets real life.
Tonight’s show is hosted by the one and only **Advocatus Diaboli** of **Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band**, delivering industrial, dark spoken word, experimental music, and unapologetic commentary straight from the studio. Joining him is **Melodious**, host of *Off-Grid Talk in the Morning* — bringing humor, perspective, and her own unique brand of “yes, I’m funny… probably.”
This is not a polished corporate broadcast. This is **off-grid music culture**, streamed live.
Why Music in the Desert Is Different
Our studio may be in the desert, but the sound is intentional.
* 🎶 Live music and experimental performances * 🎛️ Broadcast from an off-grid music studio * 🌵 Rooted in desert life, creativity, and resilience * 😈 Honest conversation, humor, and controlled chaos
Living off-grid means doing things differently — including how we create and share music. Music in the Desert is about authenticity, not perfection.
🌞 Off-Grid Progress: Building a New Solar Setup the Hard Way (But the Right Way)
Off-grid life doesn’t always come with easy solutions — especially when multiple trips to town still don’t get you what you need. After many runs trying to find the right parts, we realized it was time to stop chasing missing pieces and **build what we could with what we had**.
So we brainstormed, regrouped, and got to work.
The solar panels are now **assembled, standing, and securely spiked down**. That alone felt like a win. The next step, however, is no small task: **moving eight 100-pound batteries nearly 200 feet**, getting them set in place, wired correctly, and fully integrated into the system. Once that’s done, we’ll have **another fully functioning solar setup**.
This additional system will allow us to take some of the load off the **Music Studio solar**, which is huge for us. During long winter nights in the New Mexico desert, studio time becomes limited. Without sun, we don’t create power — and creativity doesn’t always stick to daylight hours. This setup should finally allow us to **work later into the night**, even when the sun sets early.
—
🔋 Why This Solar Setup Matters
At **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun**, off-grid living is a constant balance of power management, planning, and adaptation. We’ve reconfigured this solar system **many times**, trying different approaches, but nothing else fell into place the way this did. Sometimes the “right” solution only becomes clear after everything else fails.
That’s the reality of off-grid life — trial, error, and persistence.
—
🔨 What’s Next on the Project List?
That’s still up in the air.
We may finally put the **flooring down in the Greenroom**, since we now have everything needed to do it. Other projects are on the list as well, but those will require time, planning, and saving funds — another familiar rhythm of off-grid living.
There’s always something to fix, build, or improve out here. And honestly? That’s part of what keeps it rewarding.
— 🎶 Powered by Music and the Sun
This project isn’t just about power — it’s about **supporting creativity**. Music is a huge part of life here, and the soundtrack to this video is **“Skally Wag” by Advocatus Diaboli**, bringing the perfect energy to another day of building, hauling, and problem-solving.

Off-grid living isn’t easy, but it’s honest, creative, and deeply rewarding. One solar panel, one battery, and one project at a time.
5 Years Off-Grid: Solar Troubles, Triumphs & Celebration at Ka-Hoon Campground 🌞🎤
Today marks **five incredible years** of living off-grid on our land — October 18th, 2020! To celebrate, we’re hosting a special **Open Mic Night** at **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**, livestreamed at **6 PM MDT** on our **Colquhoun Entertainment TikTok profile**.
In honor of our anniversary, we’re opening the **vault** once again with **Part 2 of our 8k solar build** — a real story of challenges, lessons, and victory.
During the build, we ran into major issues when **two solar controllers stopped working**. At first, we thought we’d done something wrong, but after bringing in a **certified solar technician**, we discovered that **everything was wired correctly**.
The real culprit? The **manufacturer had wired the combiner box backwards**, which caused it to **feed back into the controllers**, burning them out! Thankfully, **Shop Solar Kits** stood behind their products, sending us a **new combiner box and controller** and even covering the **technician’s cost**.
Once everything was replaced, the system ran perfectly — finally bringing power to our **Greenroom and Music Studio**, and temporarily powering our **RV** until the 5k solar setup is complete.
This project is a reminder that **living off-grid isn’t always easy**, but every challenge makes the reward that much brighter. Come celebrate our 5-year milestone — **music, laughter, and community under the desert sky.**

From Solar Dreams to 5 Years Off-Grid: Celebrating Our Desert Anniversary 🌵🎶
In honor of our **5-year anniversary on the land** — October 18th, 2020 — we’re opening the **vault** to share a special look back at one of our biggest milestones: **building our 8k solar system**.
This system currently powers our **Greenroom and Music Studio**, and for now, it’s even keeping our **RV running** until the new **5k solar system** is complete. Every panel, wire, and connection represents a step toward complete self-sufficiency and freedom in the New Mexico desert.
We’ve come a long way since our first day out here, learning to adapt, grow, and create in the off-grid life. To celebrate these five incredible years, we’re hosting an **Open Mic & Karaoke Night** at **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**!
🎤 **Join us Saturday, October 18th** — either **in person** under the stars or **livestreamed** on our **Colquhoun Entertainment TikTok profile**.
Come celebrate with us — five years of building, music, and off-grid living in the desert we call home. 🌙
We’ve officially taken a big step forward in our off-grid journey — building our own **8k solar system** from the ground up! It might not look perfect (yes, the boards aren’t exactly straight, but they were the best we could find at Home Depot 😅), but it works, and that’s what matters most when you’re living sustainably.
## The Build
This DIY solar setup is an **8k, 48-volt system** charging **12 x 250ah AGM batteries**. We’ve programmed the system to shut down at **51%** to protect and extend the life of the batteries. Right now, this powerhouse is running our **Greenroom, Music Studio, and RV** — and it’s holding strong.
## Why DIY Solar?
Going off-grid isn’t about perfection; it’s about independence and resilience. By building this system ourselves, we saved money, learned valuable skills, and created something that truly supports our way of life in the desert. The boards may not be perfect, but the energy they capture is clean, renewable, and ours to use.
## What’s Next
Alongside this 8k system, we’re working on building a **5k setup** dedicated to running just our RV. Having separate systems will give us even more flexibility and efficiency in how we manage power across our property.
## Off-Grid Living, Powered by the Sun
Our solar project proves that you don’t need a professional crew or a flawless build to harness the power of the sun. What you need is determination, creativity, and the willingness to get your hands dirty. Each day, our panels soak up desert sunlight and transform it into the power that fuels our music, our home, and our dreams.
🌞⚡ **Living off-grid isn’t about perfection — it’s about progress. And every watt brings us one step closer.** ⚡🌞
