Free Range Cattle Encounter: Respecting Nature at Ka-Hoon Campground & Event Center

🌵 When Nature Teaches You to Slow Down

Exploring off-grid land often means witnessing raw, unscripted moments of nature. While observing free range cattle, a dark shape on the ground initially raised concern—potentially a calf in distress.

In environments like Ka-Hoon Campground & Event Center, experiences like this are part of the reality of off grid living—where human presence blends with natural ecosystems rather than controlling them.

🐄 Observing Before Acting

Approaching carefully revealed a calm but protective herd. The mother cow remained alert, signaling the need to stop and observe instead of intervene.

Observations included:

  • The herd maintained calm awareness
  • Protective maternal behavior was present
  • Minimal movement near the calves

Moments later, the situation clarified—two healthy newborn calves resting close to their mother, exactly as nature intended.

⚠️ Why Respecting Distance Matters

In off-grid and rural environments, understanding animal behavior is essential.

Best practices for safety and respect:

  • Maintain a safe distance from livestock
  • Avoid sudden movements or direct approach
  • Recognize protective instincts as natural behavior
  • Allow nature to resolve situations independently

This moment reinforced a core principle of ranch life and desert living—not everything requires human intervention.

🌄 The Reality of Off-Grid Living

Life at Ka-Hoon Campground & Event Center offers authentic experiences shaped by nature.

This includes:

  • Direct interaction with natural ecosystems
  • Real-time learning through observation
  • Respect for wildlife and livestock balance

Life Off-Grid, Stroke Recovery, Pituitary Macroadenoma, Health Journey, Sunsets & Hope

Life Off-Grid Isn’t Always Easy

Sorry we’ve been a little quieter lately. Even our morning off-grid campfire chats — where we share experiences and try to help others considering this lifestyle — have been harder for me to keep up with. And I truly love helping people.

Off-grid life is raw, real, and full of lessons. It isn’t always easy, but it teaches resilience, patience, and the importance of community.

Brent’s Stroke Recovery and Our Journey

Many of you know that a year ago, Brent (Advocatus Diaboli) suffered a cluster of strokes. It’s been a long road back, but he’s doing it — and I couldn’t love him more.

His recovery has taught us the value of perseverance, hope, and celebrating small victories in life, especially while living off-grid.

My Health Struggles: Pituitary Macroadenoma

Recently, I’ve been experiencing intense headaches and eye pain. Doctors initially suspected trigeminal neuralgia and sent me to a neurologist. While the MRI didn’t show much for the nerve, it revealed a pituitary macroadenoma, a tumor on the pituitary gland.

About 90% of pituitary macroadenomas are benign, but they can still affect hormone function. This discovery led to more bloodwork, a referral to an endocrinologist, and additional testing. So far, results indicate my immune system may be attacking my thyroid, and my pituitary gland

Upcoming Tests and What They Mean

This week, I have a more detailed pituitary MRI and a thyroid ultrasound. After these tests, we’ll better understand my treatment plan. While the waiting is stressful, everything we know so far is treatable. Surgery may be necessary, but it is not overly invasive, according to doctors.

Life Lessons: Truthfulness and Positivity

I am not seeking attention — I’m trying to be truthful. Life off-grid isn’t easy. We don’t sugarcoat our experiences. We all face trauma, health issues, and personal struggles. Living off-grid doesn’t exempt us from that reality.

In a world full of negativity, we aim to offer a space of positivity — a place where you can be yourself. We don’t judge your sexuality, religion, or political views. Your life is yours to live.

We share more in our lives than on social media, and our goal is to help others while helping ourselves. These are just hurdles we have to jump (without breaking a leg, as I can’t jump 😅).

Finding Peace: Sunsets and Perspective

When life throws you a curveball, stop, take a breath, watch the sunset, and enjoy the moment. These reflective pauses help us find clarity and peace, even in the midst of health challenges and uncertainty.

We continue forward. We’re here if you need support, have questions, are looking for a place, or just want someone to talk to — or listen to our music.

Before all this, I had only heard the word “pituitary.” I had no idea how much it controls in the body.

Today, I’m sharing a peaceful desert sunset — a small reminder that while life can be serious, there is still beauty, hope, and resilience.

Safe Dog Car Rides, Happy Pups, Car Windows Down Under 35 MPH, Pet Travel Safety Tips

Watching our dogs enjoy the breeze from the car window is one of life’s simple joys. At Colquhoun Entertainment, we make sure that our pups can experience the thrill of a car ride safely, with windows down only under 35 mph. This prevents excessive wind from overwhelming them, keeping their eyes and ears comfortable. Our dogs love feeling the fresh air on their faces, sniffing the changing scents, and basking in the freedom of the road.

For pet owners looking for safe dog car rides, this is a reminder that pet safety comes first. While it’s tempting to let them stick their heads out at high speeds, the risk of debris or strong wind can be harmful. By keeping speeds moderate and monitoring the environment, dogs enjoy the ride safely.

Our happy pups, gleeful expressions, and tail wags showcase the perfect dog car adventure. Whether you have small dogs, large dogs, or multiple pets, ensuring a safe, controlled ride is always the priority. Pet owners who love documenting their furry friends will find this approach not only safe but also Instagram- and TikTok-worthy.

From dog lovers to puppy enthusiasts, the joy of seeing a dog enjoy a car window breeze is universal. Remember: safety first, fun always

Desert Rescue Dog Pack Living Off-Grid | Dreugan, Persephone, Vibria & Lurch at Plateau Hame de Colquhoun

Life Off-Grid With a Desert Rescue Dog Pack at Plateau Hame de Colquhoun

Living off-grid in the high desert changes how you see animals. Dogs are not just pets here — they are companions, early-warning systems, shadows in the dust, and family members who adapt to wind, silence, heat, and long open land.

At Plateau Hame de Colquhoun, our lives are intertwined with four rescue dogs: Dreugan, Persephone, Vibria, and Lurch. Each came from a completely different situation. Each carries a different temperament. Together, they formed a working desert pack.

This is the real story of off-grid desert living with rescue dogs — the challenges, the loyalty, the escape artistry, and the personalities that make homestead life unforgettable.

Meet the Desert Pack

🐺 Dreugan — The Blue-Eyed Vocal Husky Rottweiler (Turned 5 on Jan 1)

Dreugan and Persephone

Dreugan is our oldest and biggest dog, with piercing blue eyes set against jet-black fur. He is extremely vocal — so vocal that other dogs and even people sometimes misunderstand his intentions.

We picked Dreugan up at just 4 weeks old from a backyard breeder. Two puppies remained. One was friendly and outgoing. Dreugan was hiding, timid, unsure. We chose the one who needed us more.

He grew into:

  • A momma’s boy who doesn’t like losing sight of me
  • A powerful, independent personality (very Husky)
  • An escape artist
  • Affectionate — but on his terms

He has also been the most challenging dog I’ve ever raised. Strong-willed. Smart. Emotional. Loyal.

🐾 Persephone — The Shelter Rescue Who Chose the Pack (Turned 4 in December)

Persephone

Persephone belongs to our daughter but spends most of her time with us. Rescued from a local animal shelter, she prefers the company of the pack while her mom is at work.

She is:

  • Social and adaptable
  • Calm inside the group dynamic
  • Happiest when surrounded by the other dogs

She chose the desert pack as much as we chose her.

🐕 Vibria — Found in a Box in a Ditch (Almost 2)

Vibria and Dreugan

Vibria and two littermates were found in a box in a ditch on Calhoun Street in Roswell. The vet estimated she was about 3 weeks old.

Raised from nearly nothing, she became:

  • A dog who loves almost everyone
  • Completely attached to us
  • A fence-climbing escape artist if separated

She had the smallest beginning and grew into the most socially fearless dog in the pack.

🐶 Lurch — The Fourth Home and Final Stop (Adopted Last September)

Lurch

Lurch came from Minnesota. He was my dad’s dog, but due to health reasons, my parents couldn’t keep him. We became his fourth home — and his last.

He wouldn’t respond to his old names (Tippy, Arrow). Too many homes. Too many resets. We renamed him Lurch.

He is:

  • Wary of strangers
  • Deeply affectionate once he trusts you
  • Learning what stability feels like

We’ve set September as his birthday month — a fresh start.

What Off-Grid Desert Life Teaches You About Dogs

Living in the desert with a dog pack teaches you things most people never see:

  • Dogs develop territory awareness naturally
  • Pack hierarchy forms without force
  • Escape artistry is common with intelligent breeds
  • Vocal dogs are often misunderstood
  • Rescue dogs carry emotional histories
  • Loyalty in a remote place becomes very visible
  • Dogs adapt to desert heat, wind, and silence better than people

Why Rescue Dogs Thrive in Homestead and Off-Grid Living

Rescue dogs often do incredibly well in off-grid and homestead environments because:

  • They bond strongly to “their people”
  • They value space and freedom
  • They become guardians of land and routine
  • They form deep pack relationships
  • They are incredibly resilient

Adopt-don’t-shop isn’t a slogan here. It’s visible every day.

Rattlesnake in the Road: Desert Wildlife Encounters and Safety Tips

Rattlesnake in the Road: What You Need to Know About Desert Wildlife

Encountering a rattlesnake in the desert can be an unexpected experience. While many of us explore off-grid areas for peace, adventure, and solitude, it’s important to remember that the desert is home to many wild creatures, including rattlesnakes.

In this instance, a rattlesnake was spotted sunning itself right in the road. While nothing dangerous occurred, this encounter is a reminder to stay alert, respect wildlife, and move cautiously while exploring desert landscapes.

Rattlesnakes are not aggressive by nature—they usually strike only when threatened. Observing from a safe distance ensures both your safety and the snake’s well-being. For those living or camping off-grid, keeping an eye on the surroundings, especially in remote areas, is crucial.

Sharing these experiences also helps others understand the reality of desert life, from the unique wildlife to the precautions you should take. Whether you’re hiking, camping, or simply driving through, encounters like this are part of what makes desert adventures memorable.
