Rain in the Valley: Experiencing New Mexico Monsoon Storms From Our Desert Mesa | Off-Grid Living & Music

Rain in the Valley: A Peaceful New Mexico Desert Monsoon Experience

There are moments in the desert that remind us why we chose this life.

Sitting high on the mesa and watching rain fall across the valley below is one of my favorite things. The New Mexico desert may be known for its dry landscape, but when the monsoon storms arrive, the entire valley transforms.

The clouds roll across the sky, rain curtains move through the distance, and the desert comes alive.

This is off-grid living in New Mexico — finding beauty in the quiet moments, appreciating nature, and sharing the journey from our little piece of the desert.

Watching Rain Fall Across The New Mexico Desert

From the top of the mesa, every storm creates a different view.

The valley below changes as rain moves across the landscape. The smell of desert rain, the sound of thunder in the distance, and the peaceful atmosphere create a moment that is impossible to recreate anywhere else.

Living off-grid teaches you to appreciate things many people overlook:

  • The first drops of rain after a dry season
  • Storm clouds building over the mountains
  • The beauty of the desert landscape
  • Quiet moments away from the noise of everyday life
  • The connection between nature and simple living

New Mexico Monsoon Season: When The Desert Comes Alive

Many people imagine the desert as endless dry land, but New Mexico’s monsoon season brings incredible beauty.

Rainstorms bring:

  • Dramatic desert skies
  • Cooler temperatures
  • Changing landscapes
  • Wildlife activity
  • A renewed feeling of life across the mesa

These storms are a reminder that even in harsh environments, nature finds a way to thrive.

The Monsoon Arrives: First Real Rain Hits the New Mexico Desert | Off-Grid Storm Adventure at Plateau Hame De Colquhoun

The Monsoon Arrives: First Real Rain Hits the New Mexico Desert

After months of extreme heat, dry conditions, and the relentless New Mexico desert sun, the skies have finally opened. The first real rain of the year has arrived at Plateau Hame De Colquhoun, marking the beginning of monsoon season on the mesa.

For those living off-grid, rain is more than just weather—it is a moment of change. The sound of rain hitting the desert, the smell of wet earth, and the transformation of the landscape remind us how powerful and important every storm can be.

This is the beginning of our monsoon journey as we document the storms, the calm between weather systems, and the way the desert comes alive after rainfall.

The First Monsoon Storm of the Year

The first major storm of the season arrived with powerful energy. Dark clouds rolled across the New Mexico desert, winds moved through the mesa, and much-needed rain began falling across the land.

After weeks of intense summer heat, the cooler air and rainfall brought a welcome change. The desert, which can appear quiet and still during dry periods, begins to transform when the monsoon arrives.

During monsoon season, we experience:

  • Dramatic desert storm clouds
  • Powerful rain and changing weather patterns
  • Cooler temperatures after extreme heat
  • New life returning to the landscape
  • The challenges and rewards of off-grid living

At Plateau Hame De Colquhoun, every storm becomes part of the story of living with the land.

A Break Between Storms: The Calm Before the Next Wave

After the first storm moved through, we entered a brief break between storms.

The desert became quiet again, but the skies showed signs that more weather was on the way. These moments between storms are some of the most beautiful parts of desert living—the cooler air, the changing clouds, and the anticipation of the next rainfall.

Monsoon season in New Mexico is unpredictable. One moment the desert can be dry and still, and the next it can be filled with thunder, wind, and rain.

This constant change is what makes desert life so unique.

Living Off-Grid During Monsoon Season

Off-grid living means being connected to the environment around us. Weather affects our daily routines, solar power, outdoor projects, animals, and life on the mesa.

Rain brings challenges, but it also brings appreciation.

Every storm reminds us why we chose this lifestyle:

  • To experience nature firsthand
  • To protect and preserve the land
  • To build a community connected to the desert
  • To appreciate the simple moments that many people never see

Happy New Year From the Desert 🌵 Music, Community & Off-Grid Life | Plateau Hame de Colquhoun

🎆 Happy New Year from Plateau Hame de Colquhoun LLC – A Look Back at 2025

Happy New Year from all of us here at **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun LLC**! As we step into a brand-new year, we want to take a moment to look back on **2025** — a year that challenged us deeply, changed us forever, and reminded us why community truly matters.

This past year has been one of the **hardest and most emotional** of our lives. We faced countless hurdles, unknowns, fears, and major changes. At times, the road ahead felt impossible. But together, we continue to **survive, adapt, and overcome** — one step at a time, one sunrise in the desert at a time.

🌵 A Growing Desert Family

In **September**, we began a new journey by sharing our lives on **TikTok**, opening a window into off-grid desert living, creativity, music, and real conversations. Since then, our **desert family has grown beyond anything we could have imagined**.

Even if you don’t live here in the New Mexico desert, you are part of this community. Our livestreams on **Colquhoun Entertainment** wouldn’t be what they are without you. Your presence, comments, encouragement, and shared laughter mean more than words can say.

🎶 Music in the Desert & Creative Survival

One of the brightest lights in a difficult year has been **Music in the Desert** — a place where music, laughter, bonfires, and real connection come together. Through **Music in the Desert**, live streams, hosted  by **Advocatus Diaboli and Melodious,  with special appearances of the Grim Leafer Band**, we’ve been able to turn hardship into art and stress into sound.

Music has helped us heal, helped us keep moving forward, and helped us stay connected when life felt overwhelming.

* Our **campers** at **Ka-Hoon Campground**
* Everyone who attended events at **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**

This year tested us in unimaginable ways — including a terrifying medical emergency when **Brent suffered a stroke**, and we almost lost him. It was a time filled with fear, uncertainty, and long nights. The love and support we received during that period will never be forgotten.

🌅 Looking Toward 2026

While 2025 was incredibly hard, it also showed us how strong this community truly is. As we move into **2026**, we do so with hope — hope for healing, stability, creativity, and brighter days ahead.

From all of us at:

Day 2 Off-Grid Solar Build + New Year’s Music in the Desert LIVE Tonight!

**Day 2 of the Solar Build at Ka-Hoon Campground & Event Center**

Day 2 of our solar build is underway here at **Ka-Hoon Campground** and **Ka-Hoon Event Center**, and like most off-grid projects, planning hasn’t been as simple as it looked on paper.

When we purchased our solar setup, it came with a metal frame designed to be bolted together. What it didn’t include were the pipes needed to hold the frame upright. The challenge? We can purchase the pipe, but hauling **22-foot lengths** out to our off-grid location just isn’t possible for us.

Our first solution was to buy shorter pipe sections, have them threaded, and connect them together. Unfortunately, the local pipe place doesn’t offer threading services and doesn’t carry the connectors we’d need. With limited options and no way to fabricate the parts ourselves, we had to pivot once again.

So **Day 2 became all about problem-solving** — rethinking the mounting system and figuring out a setup that works with our tools, transport limitations, and off-grid reality. Today’s plan is to move forward with **building and assembly** now that we have a clearer direction.

## **Music in the Desert – New Year’s Party Update**

As we continue the build, we’re also finalizing plans for **Music in the Desert**. We’re still dialing in the best start time for **tonight’s New Year’s Party**, but right now it’s looking like **8 PM MST**.

Join us live on **TikTok and YouTube via Colquhoun Entertainment** as we ring in the New Year with music, creativity, and off-grid vibes. Hosted by **Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band**, with **Melodious** keeping things flowing, this will be a celebration you won’t want to miss.

## **Join Us for Offgrid Talk – Every Morning**

We Live in the Desert—But Nights Like This Make It All Worth It 🌕✨🐾

🌌 Life in the Desert: Night Skies, Cool Air, and Canine Joy

One of the things I absolutely love about living in the desert is the breathtaking view of the night sky. Out here, far from city lights and surrounded by open space, the stars put on a show every night. With little to no light pollution, it’s easy to get lost staring into the cosmos — planets, constellations, and sometimes even meteor showers.

Daytime in the desert is a whole different story. With temperatures climbing well over 100 degrees, we tend to go dormant during the heat of the day, focusing on ways to stay cool and conserve energy. Even the dogs know to take it easy. The sand gets scorching hot, so they usually lounge in the shade or stay indoors until things cool off.

But when the sun goes down? That’s when the magic happens.

As the desert starts to cool, we all come back to life. The dogs race around the yard, tails wagging, chasing shadows and each other. We sit outside, soaking in the cooler air, watching the sky transition from golden sunsets to deep star-filled black. It’s peaceful, grounding, and absolutely beautiful.

**Last night’s view was especially breathtaking.** The mostly full moon lit up the desert, casting soft shadows and adding a silvery glow to everything. It made sitting outside completely worth it — the kind of night that reminds you why you live out here. The stars still sparkled, but that moon stole the show.

Sometimes we go live on TikTok to share this little slice of desert life — the calm, the stars, the moon, and the dogs doing what dogs do best: playing under the night sky.

Ka-Hoon Plateau hame de Colquhoun

Some may notice a few differences.. We are still Plateau Hame De Colquhoun,  but we will be going by Ka-Hoon, which is how Colquhoun is pronounced.. You may even notice that the Art of tiny living page has been renamed. It will become Life with the Colquhoun page. (I screwed up and gave it the wrong name, and now I have to wait 30 days to change it.

We are doing this all as it’s easier to pronounce Ka-hoon and shorter. We no longer do the Tiny living stuff, so thereno reason to keep it. We will also be making changes to the website.

We’ve had so many people contact us asking us to do more lives. We aim at doing lives a few times a week here on Facebook on the “wrong named page” Ka-Hoon Campground and on the Plateau Hame De Colquhoun YouTube channel.  We hope to add Tiktok soon.

Don’t forget we have the NM 2024 Nomad Gathering in the Desert coming up and have a few more exciting events that we’ll be releasing soon! So please stay tuned, like this post, and follow us!!

Dogs morning routine

It’s Monday already. We have a few things planned today if the weather permits.

Advocatus Diaboli is supposed to come over and rehearse. A few neighbors are supposed to come and work on a project, which can be done as long as it doesn’t get windy.

I’m still working on my crochet project. I was able to figure out a way to make 2 at once. I probably been done with 2 yesterday, but idk why I kept screwing up and had to keep restarting.
