Mystery Animal Caught on Camera in the New Mexico Desert: Fox, Raccoon or Badger?

Mystery Animal Caught on Camera at Ka-Hoon Campground in the New Mexico Desert

Another mysterious visitor has appeared on the security cameras at Ka-Hoon Campground & Event Center, part of Plateau Hame de Colquhoun in the New Mexico desert.

We’re trying to identify this one because, at first glance, it looks like it could be a fox — but the animal’s size, shape and proportions have us questioning that identification.

Could it be a large raccoon? We don’t see many raccoons out here in the desert. We do, however, have badgers in the area, making this mystery even more interesting.

So we’re asking our readers:

What do YOU think this animal is?

Caught on the Ka-Hoon Security Camera

The animal was captured moving through the property on our security system.

At first, our best guess was fox, but something about the animal’s appearance doesn’t quite seem right.

The questions we’re trying to answer:

🦊 Is it a fox?
🦝 Could it be a large raccoon?
🦡 Could we be looking at a badger?

🐕Maybe a dog
🐾 Is it another New Mexico desert animal entirely?

Watch the footage carefully and examine the animal’s body shape, size, legs, tail and movement before making your guess.

Fox, Raccoon or Dog?

Identifying wildlife from a security-camera recording isn’t always easy.

Distance, camera angle, nighttime lighting and movement can make an animal appear significantly different from how it would look up close.

That’s why we’re not claiming we know what this animal is.

We’re putting the mystery out to the community.

🦊 Could It Be a Fox?

Foxes can be found in New Mexico, and their body shape can make them a reasonable first guess.

But the apparent size and proportions of this animal are what make us hesitate.

🦝 Could It Be a Raccoon?

A large raccoon could potentially create some of the same visual confusion.

However, raccoons aren’t something we commonly see around our part of the New Mexico desert, which makes this possibility particularly interesting.

🐕 Could It Be a Dog?

Dog is another possibility worth considering.

We do encounter free-ranging dog populations, including both feral groups and unattended domestic animals.

Security Camera Caught a Mysterious Desert Animal at Our Off-Grid Campground Last Night

A Quiet Visitor Passed Through the Campground Last Night

One of the things about living off-grid is you eventually realize…

We’re not the only ones who live here.

Last night our security cameras recorded a small nighttime visitor calmly wandering through the campground. No panic, no mess, no interest in anything we had — just a peaceful stroll across the property like it had somewhere important to be.

From the shape, ears, and long tail, it *looks* like it may be a fox — but we aren’t wildlife experts. If anyone familiar with desert animals recognizes the species, feel free to let us know what you think.

Whatever it was, the little traveler appeared healthy, relaxed, and completely at home in the desert.

Honestly… probably one of the most polite guests we’ve ever had.

Sharing Space With the Real Residents

People sometimes imagine desert living as empty.

It isn’t.

It’s just quieter — and the neighbors don’t knock.

We see tracks in the mornings, hear distant calls at night, and every once in a while the cameras show us who actually lives here full-time. Moments like this are a reminder that we didn’t create this place. We simply settled into it.

We don’t chase wildlife.
We don’t feed wildlife.
We don’t disturb wildlife.

We just observe and respect.

Out here, coexistence matters more than ownership.

The Desert and the Music

Experiences like this are part of why we created **Music in the Desert** in the first place.
The land, the stillness, the stars, and the unexpected moments all shape the atmosphere of what we do.

Sometimes the audience is people listening to the music.

Sometimes… it’s whoever quietly passes through under the night sky.
