Socializing Dogs while living in the Desert

Living out in the desert one of our issues is trying to socialize the dogs. To do this we take them to parks and the occasional dog park. Dreugan loves dog parks that have the agility stuff..

When we go to a dog park we usually go in when it’s empty. Dreugan has a lot of anxiety towards other dogs as he has been attacked multiple times by other dogs (Not in a dog park, but while walking him on a leash).

We took Dreugan and Amigo to a dog park in a town near us, it had been empty when we got there, so we took the opportunity. Just as we let the boys off leash a man comes with 4 Boston terriers, as he’s walking to the gate his dog barks and charges the fence at Dreugan which sets him off. Right away we go to put the leash back on Dreugan, the guy with the Boston’s doesn’t slow down at all to give us time to leash Dreugan. But we luckily got him leashed up and started to walk to the opposite side of the park (This is a pretty good size park). While walking I told Brent this could be good for Dreugan (Thinking the guy would take his dogs the opposite direction) as the Boston’s would play, and Dreugan would realize they wouldn’t hurt him.

But no the guys walk through the gates and let them go, never saying anything to them. The dogs beeline it straight to us. 2 of them pouncing poor Amigo and bigger one coming for Dreugan. I was pulling Dreugan back as I envisioned a dead Boston. Remind you Dreugan is over 100 lbs… But Dreugan didn’t do anything he kept backing up. Brent and I stepped between our dogs and the Boston’s, at which time they head back to their humane (their humane never called them back). We try moving further away as the only way out is where the Boston’s and guy is standing. But the Boston’s were only gone a few seconds before heading right back at us.. Again the one went right for Dreugan and the other 2 after Amigo. This time though Dreugan wasn’t taking it as the one trying to bite me, but I was able to keep Dreugan under control long enough for Brent to pull the Boston away and yell at the guy to get his dogs before they got hurt. At which the Boston owner replied “this is a dog park”… He had called them back at that point and we had hoped he would move away from the gate so we could leave, but nope..The Boston’s made one more attempt to come towards us.. But this time Brent told the guy if he didn’t get them under control, and they came back again they will get hurt.. At that point the guy leashed them up and left all the while saying we had no right having an aggressive dog in the park.

If he would have given us a chance we would have left, ours were leashed, we gave him plenty of space. But I do have to say I was impressed with Dreugan, he could have hurt the Boston, but didn’t even try or threaten until the Boston tried to bite me, that’s when he snarled.

It really upset me, I was hoping for a learning experience for Dreugan, even though he handled it okay, I feel it did not help his anxiety.

Aliens or Military Training at Plateau Hame De Colquhoun

Not much been going on out here, we are getting ready for a nice Turkey day with the neighbors. Nights, though chilly, have been clear with beautiful sky views. If you believe in aliens or not, camping out here you may have some experiences that will make you wonder. We have to admit we’ve seen a few questionable things ourselves. Strange lights in the skies, making weird movements that suddenly will be surrounded by helicopters. Was it a military practice or something else? I don’t know if we will ever know for sure. Comment with your thoughts and experiences.

Dealing with the cold at Plateau Hame De Colquhoun

Mornings have been a bit chilly here at Plateau Hame De Colquhoun , It was 17 outside when we got up this morning… Since we run a buddy heater for our heat, we only tend to run it at night before going to bed and in the morning when we get up. This morning when we got out of the warm bed, it was 30 degrees inside. The dogs wanted out, but Weillow met me with her teeth chattering.. Weillow wears a jacket and crawls up on the couch at night under blankets.. Like us she was probably warm until she had to go to the bathroom.

We can run the heater all night and probably will if we feel it’s going to get cold. Cold to us is when it doesn’t warm up during the day. Usually our days warm up enough to warm the inside of the RV nicely, we open windows and doors to get the heat in, but before it starts to cool off we shut everything down to trap in the warmth. We tend to stay at an even temp (depending on outside temp) until around 9-10 pm.. If we plan on staying up a bit we kick on the #buddyheater until we are ready for bed or it warms up. We do this as we feel safer, and save on propane even though we have smoke and Co2 detectors, sleeping with the heater off.. In the morning the first to wake up turns on the heater.

We had talked about doing wood, but if you’ve ever seen any of our photos trees are pretty sparse, and the cost of wood isn’t worth it.

Amigo the Puppy at Plateau Hame De Colquhoun

A couple months ago we did something that we had no plans on doing. We got a puppy we called “Amigo”, he was 8 weeks old born July 20th. We asked about his parents mother being around 40lbs and father 80lbs.. Amigo seemed tiny to us, so we thought he would get around 50 lbs a perfect size for the RV, since Dreugan is 100 lbs, smaller dog would have been nice.. Though at Amigo’s last vet exam at 13 weeks, he weighed in at 24 lbs, which means he’ll get around 80 lbs maybe more..

That’s fine with us, sometimes smaller isn’t easier.. We broke all our plans with getting Amigo, when Litha passed we wanted to wait to get another dog, and planned on getting a med size (not puppy, we just got past the puppy stage with Dreugan) dog. But when we saw the puppy sign Brent and I both felt compelled to go look (we never go look at parking lot puppies). We got there and the first puppy to come to us was Amigo, he looked similar to Litha even with the same white marks on his chest (Amigo is a different breed, only color, markings are similar, we don’t expect him to be Litha). We tried to put Amigo back in with the other pups but he didn’t want to go.

So now Amigo is part of our family, he’s vaccinated, chipped and officially a family member. This may sound weird to some but we feel Litha picked him out for us. 3rd picture is Litha- June 2015 to Sept 2022 ❤️

Plateau Hame De Colquhoun Plateau Home of Colquhoun

I have been getting a lot of memories from Facebook, and Google of our move here a little over two years ago. Moving here on the land was the first thing Brent and I have done for ourselves since we have been together. We have helped others build their land to do events for many years.

But we wanted to do something for ourselves, we wanted to have our own campground and Event center.

Moving here to Plateau Hame De Colquhoun has been a learning curve. The land was vacant, had trash left by individuals dumping, cow patties from the free range cattle, cactus, snake weeds, yucca and more.

Before we could open we cleaned up and hauled off the trash, mowed, built a road for better access, build a stage, toilet.

In April of 2022 we opened for our first event an open mic. We were very fearful, we had worked many events for others but this was our first time for ourselves. We had a lot of what ifs. What if nobody shows, what if solar and generators don’t work the way we planned, what if people don’t like it, what if the road out deters people.. So many what ifs we had thought about quitting. But us being who we are (stubborn) we kept going. People did come, they said they enjoyed themselves. This made all the work so far worth it!

For all wondering as we get asked a lot.. Plateau Hame De Colquhoun is Scottish for Plateau Home of Colquhoun (Ka-hoon). Colquhoun is a Scottish clan which is Brent Colquhoun ancestry.

First Kitchen, here at Plateau Hame De Colquhoun

Our first Kitchen we had set up here at Plateau Hame De Colquhoun . It lasted 2 months, we then upgraded to a heavy duty carport, and used pieces of the old one to build a shower house. During this time you couldn’t go into town and shower due to Covid. What we did was use an electric water pump (ran off the generator), an on demand water heater. The 2nd carport lasted until the end of January, shower lasted about a month. 

We have come along way since then. Still no shower, but that’s okay we can go in now and shower at Planet Fitness (Los Lunas, NM) .  We are solid now, no tarps, no carport for the winds to destroy.

Happy Veterans Day!! 2023 Haunted Hell Ride

Happy Veterans Day, we thank all the veterans for serving and supporting us!

Not much has been happening here, had a few campers and getting a few things ready for a neighborhood Turkey Day.

We have started to work on next year’s Haunted Hell Ride.We had good reviews from the Hell Ride this year, it did better than we expected, especially being our first. We have learned a few things that we hope to incorporate into next year’s Hay ride. Date is set, though been debating doing one or two nights?

Realtors (Land Brokers) buying land in the Desert. Buyers be prepared

I don’t understand realtors (Land Brokers), is it only about the money? We get people driving out here lost looking for land, or they buy land not being prepared for living up here. We try to help as much as we can. But there’s only so much we can do. Many can’t even build anything until the land is paid off, but they put all their money into the property and have no where else to go. Yet they can’t make it without a solid structure to live in.

I do have to say the realtor Daniel works with his customers, he has asked us if it’s okay he sends people looking at land in this area to us. He has great communication skills, and seems to care.. (no he didn’t pay us to say that, we’ve never actually met him in person). We don’t sugar coat it, living out here isn’t easy, you have to be solid, winds will tear up anything that isn’t solid. Wells are very expensive it’s cheaper to haul water, and even though there’s a powerline you can’t access it. Don’t build or park vehicles and leave, it probably won’t be there when you get back, or you’ll have/had squatters and they tore it up. Try to build where neighbors can see your buildings, if we can’t see it, and you’re gone it’s likely to be vandalized. Become friends with the neighbors, we help watch out for each other. I can only talk about this area we live in, others I don’t know how they work.

I understand making money, we all do. But you’d think if you send buyers out with good info and they make it, continue to live on the land it’d be better, than the buyers failing and you having to resell the land? Many of these pieces of land become trashed, piles of left items, tents, poles, and then others start dumping trash.

It’s not only about the potential buyer, it’s about all of us out here, you leave something valuable out, or build and leave. It’s an invitation to vandals, which puts us all at risk.

Don’t get me wrong.. It doesn’t all fall on the realtor (Land Broker). People need to do their research and read the fine print. But a little education from the realtor would be nice too.. you’d think they would rather the person succeed in living in their property and not fail

Plateau Hame De Colquhoun Quiet Days

After the successful private event on Saturday, it’s been quiet for a few days. We spent today working on community projects, before the winds started to pick up. Which for me means trying to stay out of the wind as much as possible. We do have campers coming in and one private event scheduled for this month.
