Off-Grid Desert Living in New Mexico | Ka-Hoon Campground Homestead Life & Survival Reality

Off-Grid Desert Living in New Mexico at Ka-Hoon Campground

Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center is a remote off-grid homestead in the New Mexico desert, located eleven miles down a washboard dirt road. This is not a resort lifestyle — it is raw, rural, self-sufficient living shaped by wind, heat, isolation, and resilience.

This is the reality of off-grid living in New Mexico, where solar power fluctuates, desert storms roll in without warning, and every day requires building, adapting, and surviving.

What Off-Grid Life Looks Like at Ka-Hoon

  • Eleven miles of rough washboard road access
  • Solar power depending on weather
  • Strong desert winds and extreme temperature swings
  • No city lights — only stars and open sky
  • Campfires, storytelling, and community gathering

This is homesteading in the American Southwest, where land is not just lived on — it is actively worked and maintained.

Challenges of Desert Homesteading

Living off-grid in New Mexico requires adaptation:

  • Energy management with solar limitations
  • Water and resource planning
  • Isolation and long-distance supply runs
  • Harsh environmental conditions

Despite this, Ka-Hoon continues to grow as a desert campground, event center, and creative off-grid community space.

Why People Seek Off-Grid Living

Search trends show rising interest in:

  • Off-grid lifestyle USA
  • Tiny living alternatives
  • Rural homesteading
  • Desert survival living
  • Self-sufficient communities

Ka-Hoon represents a real-world example of this lifestyle in action.

Rattlesnake in Dog Yard: Off-Grid Living Reality, Dog Bite Recovery & Desert Survival Lessons

🐍 Rattlesnake Encounter in Off-Grid Dog Yard (Real Incident Report)

🌵 Introduction

It’s been an eventful week at Colquhoun Entertainment & Ka-Hoon Campground & Event Center, reminding us that off-grid living is unpredictable, raw, and always full of lessons from nature.

🐍 The Rattlesnake Incident

For the first time since living here, a rattlesnake entered the dog yard—an area with constant human and animal activity.

The snake was found:

  • Curled beside a dog water bowl
  • During an extreme dry period (less than 1 inch of rain all year)
  • Likely searching for water in harsh desert conditions

Unfortunately, for the safety of our animals, the snake had to be dispatched.

🐶 Dog Exposure & Immediate Response

Two dogs encountered the snake.

Initial Response

  • Immediate physical checks for bite marks
  • No puncture wounds found on either dog
  • No visible swelling at first

Even on Lurch, no bite marks were ever identified.

⏱️ Delayed Reaction in Lurch

About an hour later:

  • Swelling developed around face and neck
  • Dog remained:
    • Alert
    • Responsive
    • Eating and drinking normally

Veterinary consultation suggested:

  • Likely dry bite or very low venom exposure
  • Monitoring at home was appropriate
  • Bring in only if symptoms worsened

Thankfully, Lurch is now:

  • Fully recovering
  • Back to normal play behavior
  • Showing significant reduction in swelling

🐕 Vibria’s Outcome

  • Also bitten
  • No visible symptoms
  • No behavioral or physical reaction observed
  • Fully normal throughout recovery period

🌿 What This Teaches About Off-Grid Living

This incident reinforced important homestead principles:

🐭 Environmental Balance

  • Cats help control rodents
  • Lizards naturally reduce insect populations
  • Clutter reduction limits hiding spaces for wildlife

🐍 Wildlife Awareness

Snakes are part of the ecosystem, but:

  • Human activity areas must be managed carefully
  • Water sources can unintentionally attract wildlife

💧 Key Change Implemented

Outdoor Water Bowl Adjustment:

  • Dogs still have 24/7 indoor water access
  • Outdoor water remains available during the day
  • Outdoor bowls will now be emptied each night

Purpose:

  • Reduce nighttime wildlife attraction
  • Prevent repeat snake visits near living areas

🐾 Animal Instincts & Learning

Observations:

  • Dreugan (older dog): recognized threat and avoided snake
  • Vibria (2 years old): limited reaction, no symptoms
  • Lurch (newer dog): inexperienced with rattlesnakes, hardest lesson

This highlights how experience plays a major role in animal survival instincts.

🌵 Final Thoughts

Living off-grid means:

  • Sharing space with wildlife
  • Making quick decisions under pressure
  • Learning from every encounter

Most days are peaceful—but sometimes nature reminds us that survival is a shared system, not a controlled one.

This week was one of those reminders.

Our Dogs Explain the Stress of Off-Grid Life at Ka-Hoon Campground 🌵🐾

Life Is Tough at Ka-Hoon Campground & Event Center (According to the Dogs)

If you ask our dogs, life at **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center** is incredibly demanding. Not because of danger, weather, or off-grid living — but because someone has to supervise *everything*.

Welcome to relaxed desert life at **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun**, where the biggest challenges involve lounging, watching humans work, and staring intensely at objects that may or may not move.

Living off-grid in central New Mexico has taught us that stress looks different out here. While humans juggle projects, events, and creative work through **Colquhoun Entertainment**, the dogs remain hyper-focused on their self-appointed roles: protector of nothing, rebellious observer, proper overseer, and professional fetch enthusiast.

This balance of calm, creativity, and humor is what makes **Ka-Hoon Campground** special. From hosting **Music in the Desert** to building community through off-grid living, we believe life doesn’t have to be rushed to be meaningful.

The dogs agree — as long as they’re included in every decision.

Whether you’re here for camping, events at **Ka-Hoon Event Center**, or just a glimpse into an off-grid lifestyle filled with personality, this is what desert living really looks like: grounded, creative, and just a little sarcastic.

Living on an Island in the Sky 🌄 The Stunning Edge of the Mesa Overlooking the Rio Grande Valley

**Life on Our Island in the Sky – The Mesa Overlooking the Rio Grande Valley**

If you’ve followed our blog, watched our videos, or joined our livestreams, you’ve likely heard us describe our home as an *“island in the sky.”* What we mean by that is the mesa where we live—an elevated desert landscape with sweeping views and a beauty all its own.

Over the past months, we’ve taken you along the edge of this mesa during livestreams, and shared photos and clips that capture just a glimpse of the experience. But seeing it in person is something truly unforgettable. The edge drops off dramatically, opening to the breathtaking Rio Grande Valley below. It’s a reminder of the raw, natural power of the desert and why we chose this lifestyle in the first place.

Living off-grid on a mesa comes with its challenges—wind, isolation, and rugged terrain—but it also offers freedom, peace, and connection to nature that can’t be matched. Every sunrise and sunset feels like a gift when it stretches across the valley floor, painting the sky in colors that pictures never fully capture.

For us, sharing this journey isn’t just about showing the views—it’s about inviting you into the off-grid lifestyle, the lessons we’ve learned, and the beauty that makes it worthwhile. Whether you’re interested in off-grid living yourself or simply curious about life on the mesa, we hope our stories inspire you.

Stay tuned for more videos, livestreams, and photos as we continue exploring and sharing our island in the sky.

Why We Chose Off-Grid Living 🌿 Turning Challenges Into Freedom, Simplicity & Inspiration Every Day

Off-Grid Inspiration: Finding Freedom in Simplicity

Living off-grid is more than just a lifestyle choice — it’s a journey of **resilience, creativity, and freedom**. Every challenge faced without relying on the grid becomes a reminder of what we’re truly capable of when we step outside the ordinary.

When you live off-grid, every sunrise brings new lessons. From building systems that power our homes, to reusing resources in creative ways, each step moves us closer to a life of independence and sustainability. It’s not always easy. Harsh weather, repairs, and unexpected setbacks can test our patience. But those very challenges become the source of strength and inspiration.

The heart of off-grid living is **connection** — to the land, to nature, and to ourselves. It’s about slowing down enough to notice the sound of the wind, the rhythm of rain, or the stillness of the stars above. In those quiet moments, we discover that we don’t need as much as we once thought.

For us, inspiration comes from knowing that every system we build — from solar setups to water collection, from gardens to simple off-grid showers — is another step toward **freedom and sustainability**. Each project carries a purpose: to reduce waste, conserve resources, and live in harmony with the environment.

Off-grid living isn’t about running away from the world. It’s about creating a life where **freedom, resilience, and nature all work together.** And that’s the kind of inspiration worth sharing.
