Homesteading struggles & wins
Daily off-grid routines
Behind-the-scenes campground life
Youâll also meet the Colquhoun pups, talk with real people living this lifestyle, and get honest answers â not influencer fantasy.
Whether you want to live off-grid, are already doing it, or just curious⊠youâre welcome.
If youâve watched our latest video, you probably heard the question we get constantly:
âWhy does a campground need a membership?â
Fair question.
Most campgrounds are designed for temporary stays. You pull in, set up, stay a few days, and then move along. You might wave to your neighbors⊠but by the time you learn their name, theyâre already packing up.
We realized something.
We werenât trying to create a place people visit. We were trying to create a place people belong.
At Ka-Hoon Campground â Plateau Hame de Colquhoun, we kept meeting incredible travelers, off-gridders, artists, musicians, and people looking for a quieter life. But the structure of a normal campground meant they had to leave just when friendships started forming.
So we changed the model.
What the Membership Actually Is
The membership isnât a resort pass. It isnât a timeshare. It isnât an HOA.
Itâs simply how we keep a stable community instead of a revolving parking lot.
Instead of strict campground policies, our philosophy is simple:
Respect is the rule.
We donât want a place full of paperwork and enforcement â we want a place where people naturally look out for each other, share skills, and create something together.
What Makes It Different
Our members arenât just campers. They become part of daily life here.
People garden. People build projects. People share meals. People play music. People host events.
We host regular activities including:
People build projects.
People share meals.
People play music.
People host events.
We host regular activities including:
Music in the Desert live shows
Karaoke nights
Movies and gatherings
Seasonal events
Some members stay a short time. Some stay much longer.
The goal was never to build a campground. The goal was to build a community where people can slow down and live differently.
Who Itâs For
This place tends to attract:
Off-grid and solar living enthusiasts
RV and van lifers
Tiny home travelers
Creatives and makers
People escaping strict HOA living
Anyone wanting a quieter, more intentional environment
Itâs not luxury camping. Itâs not a party resort. Itâs a shared space built on mutual respect.
Why We Made the Video
Because the word âmembershipâ confuses people.
It sounds formal â but the reality is the opposite. The membership simply allows us to know who is here, keep the environment safe, and maintain a few real community members rather than alway constantly changing campground.
If youâre looking for a place to just park , we offer multiple platforms to book through
If youâre looking for a place to settle for a while and meet people who actually know your name â you probably understand immediately.
Free or Low-Cost Stays Are on the RiseâBut Are They Safe or Sustainable?**
In recent months, thereâs been a noticeable rise in communities and landowners offering **free or low-cost places to live**âfrom RV spots and tent camping, to off-grid setups, tiny home villages, and communal land projects. This trend is gaining momentum, especially as the national conversation around homelessness has shifted dramatically. With recent legislation signed into law making aspects of **homelessness illegal** in certain jurisdictions (such as Trump’s support of bills that criminalize encampments in public spaces), more people are seeking alternatives before they’re pushed into crisis.
But with this wave of new options, comes a critical reminder: **not all opportunities are created with your best interest in mind.**
### Free Isnât Always Free
Some of these places offer stays in tents, vehicles, or campers for little to no cost. Others promise a safe, off-grid lifestyle in exchange for a bit of labor or financial contribution. But hereâs the truth: **just because itâs free or cheap doesnât mean itâs the right fitâor even safe.** In some cases, people arrive with high hopes only to find poor living conditions, unclear rules, or outright scams.
### Research Is Your Best Friend
Before committing to any place offering low-cost or free accommodations, **do your homework**:
* **Google them.** Look up the name of the place and add “reviews” or “scam” to see what comes up. * **Check social media.** Most reputable places have a public presence. See how active and transparent they are. * **Visit if possible.** If they offer short stays on platforms like **Airbnb, Hipcamp, or The Dyrt**, consider trying a night or weekend before committing long-term. * **Ask questions.** Email or call. You should never have to pay or âsubscribeâ just to get basic information. * **Make a list.** Ask about water access, power, rules, communication, transportation, visitors, pets, and exit plans.
### Know What You’re Signing Up For
Itâs important to know if youâll be expected to work in exchange for your stay, and what that means. Some people are okay with trading a few hours of work for a space to park their RVâothers may feel uncomfortable if the workload isnât clearly defined or becomes excessive.
For example, **at our own location**, we offer **limited long-term stays through a membership program**. Members must be **fully self-contained**, meaning they need to bring their own water, have their own vehicle, and manage their own waste systems. We donât offer work exchange, but weâre upfront about the expectationsâbecause transparency matters.
### Final Thoughts
These types of communities can be beautiful, healing placesâbut **you have to make sure they align with your needs and values**. What might feel like freedom at first glance can become frustrating if the structure, expectations, or environment donât suit your lifestyle.
**Free or cheap isnât always better.** Ask questions, get details, and make sure the space is one where you can truly thriveânot just survive.
**Surviving the High Winds and a Stubborn ColdâDesert Life Edition**
Weâre on **day two** of relentless high winds, and while weâve learned over the years how to secure just about everything, thereâs always something we forgetâlike an entire **trash bag**, a **clothes hamper full of laundry**, or even **part of a car seat** left behind by a camper. That last one has taken a few trips across the yard, courtesy of Mother Nature, and now itâs on our ever-growing list of things to haul off.
If thereâs ever a âperfectâ time to be sick, I guess this would be it (though Iâd gladly skip the sick part). Both of us have been battling a coldâ**negative for flu and COVID**, thankfullyâbut itâs still draining. No fevers or body aches, but plenty of **sore throats, low energy, and overall crankiness**. And letâs just say my voice is practically nonexistent at this point.
So, how did we spend this windblown, sickness-induced lockdown? **Benadryled up, buried under blankets, and binge-watching *Stranger Things*.** Sometimes, you just have to embrace the forced downtime and let the storm passâboth the one outside and the one raging in your sinuses.
Hereâs hoping for **calmer skies, better health, and fewer runaway objects in the yard** in the coming days!
**Life at Plateau Hame de Colquhoun: A Busy Season Ahead**
Things have been bustling here at Plateau Hame de Colquhoun, and while progress on building projects has slowed, itâs for good reason. Between running Anne to work, welcoming a few new members to our **off-grid membership program**, and preparing for upcoming gigs with Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band, weâve had our hands full!
The membership program has been gaining traction, offering people the opportunity to experience off-grid living, set up a base camp, or start a homestead in the serene New Mexico desert. With a few members already settled in and new campers arriving, the community is steadily growing.
Our band has also been keeping us busy. With gigs on the horizon, weâre dedicating much of our time to rehearsing and fine-tuning performances to ensure every show delivers a unique and memorable experience.
