Rattlesnake in the Road: What You Need to Know About Desert Wildlife
Encountering a rattlesnake in the desert can be an unexpected experience. While many of us explore off-grid areas for peace, adventure, and solitude, itās important to remember that the desert is home to many wild creatures, including rattlesnakes.
In this instance, a rattlesnake was spotted sunning itself right in the road. While nothing dangerous occurred, this encounter is a reminder to stay alert, respect wildlife, and move cautiously while exploring desert landscapes.
Rattlesnakes are not aggressive by natureāthey usually strike only when threatened. Observing from a safe distance ensures both your safety and the snakeās well-being. For those living or camping off-grid, keeping an eye on the surroundings, especially in remote areas, is crucial.
Sharing these experiences also helps others understand the reality of desert life, from the unique wildlife to the precautions you should take. Whether youāre hiking, camping, or simply driving through, encounters like this are part of what makes desert adventures memorable.
Desert Rains Bring Surprising Floods Near Ka-Hoon Campground
Out here in the desert, it doesnāt take much rain to change the landscape. Over the last couple of days, weāve had a little rain at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Centerābut not much at all. Just a few miles north of us, though, the roads told a different story.
Check out the video to see a few flooded spots, including one where free-range cattle were happily wading through the water. Itās amazing how such a small amount of rain can cause puddles, washouts, and mud across the mesa.
Thatās desert lifeāone moment itās dry and dusty, and the next, the roads are soaked. Even if we donāt get much on our end, the surrounding areas can flood quickly, and it can take a few days before the roads fully dry out.
Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert means embracing these surprises. From music echoing at Ka-Hoon Campground to cattle enjoying rainwater pools, the mesa is always full of unexpected beauty.

Colquhoun, pronounced *Ka-Hoon,* bears the proud legacy of one of Scotlandās ancient clans. The timeless phrase, *āI am in cahoots with someone,ā* finds its roots in the bonds of kinship forged by the Colquhouns. Even the famed melody, *āLoch Lomondā*āknown for its refrain, *āIāll take the high road, and youāll take the low roadāā* marches to the rhythm of Colquhoun pride.
Why share this tale? Because here at Ka-Hoon, we honor our Scottish heritage through every stone and flame. From the **Bothy Kitchen** to the **Hearth**āour grand firepitāand the **Cahoots Courtyard**, our grounds echo with the spirit of camaraderie and tradition.
This year, we set forth to weave even more threads of Scottish culture into the fabric of our desert haven. So gather ye clans, wanderers, and wayfarersāraise a cup, share a tale, and let the echoes of history guide your journey at Ka-Hoon!
Merry Christmas from Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center!
Growing up on a **small dairy farm in Minnesota**, Christmas wasnāt about extravagant gifts or long vacations. In fact, there were no days offānot even for the holidays. The cows still needed milking, the calves needed feeding, and the barn needed cleaning. But despite the hard work, my parents always found a way to make Christmas special.
I can still remember the smell of something delicious baking in the oven as we bundled up and headed out to do chores. By the time we were finished and cleaned up, the house was filled with warmth and the promise of a **home-cooked meal**. After dinner, weād gather around and open a few giftsāmost years, it was **new plastic sleds**.
Those sleds were more than just giftsāthey were invitations to laughter and adventure. After opening presents, weād bundle up again and head out into the **cold Minnesota night** for a few hours of sledding under the stars. It didnāt matter how tired we were from the dayās work; those moments brought us together and made the day magical.
### **The True Spirit of Christmas** Looking back, I canāt recall most of the other gifts we received, but Iāll never forget the **smells of baking**, the **laughter at the dinner table**, and the **fun we had sledding in the dark**. Those memories remind me that **Christmas isnāt about the giftsāitās about the moments we share and the joy we create together.**
At **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**, we carry that same spirit into everything we doābuilding memories, celebrating traditions, and bringing people together.
This Christmas, whether youāre spending it with family, friends, or your campground community, may you find joy in the **simple moments** that make the day special.
**Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from all of us at Ka-Hoon Campground!**

**Living Off-Grid: Finding Strength in Lifeās Challenges**
Life in the New Mexico desert is a blend of peace and resilience. Surrounded by tranquil beauty and endless skies, itās easy to find moments of calm. Yet, even in this serene landscape, challenges persistāreminders that living off-grid is not for the faint of heart.
Many people romanticize off-grid living, envisioning it as a carefree escape from modern life. The reality is far more complex. Life here can be harsh and unforgiving, testing our determination and ingenuity daily. However, itās also profoundly rewarding, offering a connection to nature and a lifestyle of self-reliance that few ever experience.
Weāre currently navigating one of those trying times that reminds us why so few have settled this rugged land. From what weāve learned, not even indigenous peoples made their homes on this part of the mesaāthough if you know more about its history, weād love to hear your insights!
Right now, our RVās propane fridge has stopped working, likely due to a faulty igniter coil or module. Replacement parts are scarce, and modern alternatives donāt seem to match the original setup. While the fridge runs fine on electricity, the shorter days make it difficult for our solar system to keep up at night. A small backup fridge in the Greenroom helps, but the frustration of troubleshooting and tight finances adds to the weight of the situation.
To add to our challenges, the heater in our pickup has failed, leaving us wondering if the heater core needs replacing. And perhaps the hardest trial of all: our beloved 14-year-old companion Willow isnāt doing well, and we fear a difficult decision may be on the horizon.
Life out here is as demanding as it is rewarding. But itās during these tough times that we find clarity and purpose. Whether weāre problem-solving through equipment issues or leaning on each other during emotional moments, the beauty of this lifestyle is in its simplicity and resilience.
Even with the hardships, the desert offers a unique gift: a chance to pause, reflect, and remember why we chose this path. Challenges may come and go, but the sunsets, starry skies, and peaceful solitude keep us grounded.
If youāre considering off-grid living, know that itās not always easy, but itās always worth it. The trials will test you, but the rewards will inspire you to keep going.
Discovering New Mexicoās Climate: More Than Just Warm Deserts
When you think of the Southwest, a warm, dry desert likely comes to mind. I used to think New Mexico was all flatlands and sun-baked deserts too, but this state is surprisingly diverse. Not only do we have desert landscapes, but we also have forests, grasslands, and impressive mountains.
Even though New Mexico doesn’t reach the icy temperatures of Minnesota, the weather here can get quite cold. Just last night, we had our first freeze, which is actually later than usual for the season. As the temperatures dip, itās a reminder to bring out the heater. We rely on an 18,000 BTU propane heater to keep our space cozy, though we donāt run it full-time, especially at night, since we prefer a cooler sleeping environment and want to be cautious with propane heating.
With smoke and CO2 detectors, and a heater that shuts off automatically if levels get too high, we take every precaution. Our routine involves running the heater as the evening cools down and again in the morning if itās chilly. Once the sun starts to warm things up, we switch it off and let the natural warmth in.
Whether youāre planning a trip to New Mexico or thinking about winter camping in cooler desert regions, a bit of warmth at the right times makes all the difference.www.plateauhamedecolquhoun.com —— #NewMexicoClimate, #SouthwestLiving, #DesertLandscapes, #WinterCamping, #DiverseLandscapes, #CozyLiving, #PropaneHeater, #CampingTips, #NatureLovers, #OutdoorAdventures, #ColdWeather, #HeatSafety, #ExploreNewMexico, #MountainViews, #CozyHome
Screw the Lemons, Make a Sandwich: Finding Humor in Lifeās Challenges**
Sometimes life hands you lemons, and everyone tells you to make lemonade. But letās be realāwho has time for that? I say, screw those lemons and make yourself a sandwich! Lifeās challenges are tough enough without being pressured to turn every sour moment into something sweet. So, hereās my approach: when things get tough, embrace the chaos, find some humor, and make a sandwich instead. Hereās why.
### When Life Gets Messy, Go Simple
We all face those days when nothing goes right. You spill your coffee, your car wonāt start, and you trip over your own feet. Thatās life throwing lemons at you. Instead of trying to concoct some magical ālemonadeā solution, sometimes itās better to go back to basics. Make a sandwich! Itās comforting, itās simple, and most importantly, itās delicious. Plus, thereās a lot of power in taking a moment for yourself to just breathe and reset.
### Embrace Imperfection
Not everything needs to be perfect, and thatās okay. Life is messy, and so are sandwiches. You donāt need to have all the answers or fix everything at once. Sometimes, you just need to slap some cheese between two slices of bread and laugh at how crazy life can be. Trust me, it works!
### Laugh Through the Lemons
Laughter is one of the best ways to get through tough times. When things arenāt going your way, take a step back and see the humor in the situation. Whether itās your overly complicated “lemonade recipe” (aka, overthinking) or the fact that nothing seems to go as planned, a good laugh can make all the difference. Life is too short to be serious all the timeāsometimes you just need to laugh at the lemons and move on.
### Make Your Own Rules
Hereās the real lesson: you donāt have to follow lifeās recipe. Donāt like lemonade? Donāt make it. Want to add peanut butter to your sandwich? Go for it! The beauty of life is that you get to decide how to handle the challenges thrown your way. When life gives you lemons, youāre allowed to do whatever works best for *you*āwhether thatās making lemonade, a sandwich, or just tossing the lemons aside and moving on.
### Final Thoughts
Lifeās tough, but it doesnāt have to be bitter. Next time youāre faced with a challenge, remember to take it easy, laugh, and do what feels right for you. And if that means making a sandwich instead of lemonade, then youāre doing just fine.
