Desert Rains Bring Surprising Floods Near Ka-Hoon Campground
Out here in the desert, it doesnât take much rain to change the landscape. Over the last couple of days, weâve had a little rain at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Centerâbut not much at all. Just a few miles north of us, though, the roads told a different story.
Check out the video to see a few flooded spots, including one where free-range cattle were happily wading through the water. Itâs amazing how such a small amount of rain can cause puddles, washouts, and mud across the mesa.
Thatâs desert lifeâone moment itâs dry and dusty, and the next, the roads are soaked. Even if we donât get much on our end, the surrounding areas can flood quickly, and it can take a few days before the roads fully dry out.
Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert means embracing these surprises. From music echoing at Ka-Hoon Campground to cattle enjoying rainwater pools, the mesa is always full of unexpected beauty.

Right now, our RVâs propane fridge has stopped working, likely due to a faulty igniter coil or module. Replacement parts are scarce, and modern alternatives donât seem to match the original setup. While the fridge runs fine on electricity, the shorter days make it difficult for our solar system to keep up at night. A small backup fridge in the Greenroom helps, but the frustration of troubleshooting and tight finances adds to the weight of the situation.
To add to our challenges, the heater in our pickup has failed, leaving us wondering if the heater core needs replacing. And perhaps the hardest trial of all: our beloved 14-year-old companion Willow isnât doing well, and we fear a difficult decision may be on the horizon.
Life out here is as demanding as it is rewarding. But itâs during these tough times that we find clarity and purpose. Whether weâre problem-solving through equipment issues or leaning on each other during emotional moments, the beauty of this lifestyle is in its simplicity and resilience.

Even though New Mexico doesn’t reach the icy temperatures of Minnesota, the weather here can get quite cold. Just last night, we had our first freeze, which is actually later than usual for the season. As the temperatures dip, itâs a reminder to bring out the heater. We rely on an 18,000 BTU propane heater to keep our space cozy, though we donât run it full-time, especially at night, since we prefer a cooler sleeping environment and want to be cautious with propane heating.
With smoke and CO2 detectors, and a heater that shuts off automatically if levels get too high, we take every precaution. Our routine involves running the heater as the evening cools down and again in the morning if itâs chilly. Once the sun starts to warm things up, we switch it off and let the natural warmth in.

Busy Labor Day weekend at Ka-Hoon Campground with community BBQ, camping, and lending a helping hand.
Hope everyone is having a great Labor Day weekend! We donât have too much planned, but weâre excited to have a bunch of folks from the community over for a BBQ today.
There isnât much news to report, but weâre definitely enjoying the cooler days. Brent has been busy helping out around the community, which he loves doing. He recently helped a neighbor install a new breaker box and wire in some GFI plugs to support their dialysis machine. He also spent most of the day driving another neighbor, who doesnât have a vehicle right now, to town for errands and groceries.
Weâve had a nice weekend with campers enjoying the cooler weather. Yesterday, we took some time to fix the solar lights that the cattle love to knock down.
Last night was Anneâs first real shift at Loveâs, and she seemed to enjoy it. It was a bit tough on us, as we worried about her working the late shift. Thankfully, a few folks from our community stopped by the store to check on her and then reported back to us, which really helped ease our minds.
