Campground Shower Build Progress: Teamwork, Challenges, and Big Plans for Off-Grid Living!

Today was a huge milestone for our off-grid shower project at Ka-Hoon Plateau Hame De Colquhoun ! We tackled the hardest part—getting the 350-gallon IBC tote lifted, aligned, and secured on top of the first one to build our campground shower system. It was definitely more than Anne and I could handle alone, but with Brent’s help (and some neighborly support), we made it happen!

Once we figured out how to lift, turn, and line up the tote, a neighbor arrived just in time to help us cut the door and anchor everything down securely. We’re so grateful for the community support—this project wouldn’t have been possible without it!

Next steps include adjusting the plastic liners, installing an additional liner piece to lock everything into place, building a door, and plumbing the water heater and shower head. We’re also planning to add a small changing area outside the shower space, with hopes of someday installing a washing machine to make off-grid life even more comfortable for our campers and ourselves.

Every step we take brings us closer to improving the campground experience here in the New Mexico desert. This off-grid DIY shower will be available for campers to use for a small fee to help cover water and propane costs.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue building forward—one project, and one day, at a time!

Brent’s Healing, Music Magic & DIY Shower Build—Off-Grid Life Update!

We’re slowly finding our rhythm again. Brent starts physical therapy this week and is getting stronger every day! He can move his fingers a bit and tends to have the most control in the mornings. Singing has actually helped him gain a lot—music is magic like that. We truly believe he’ll be back to full strength soon.

This weekend, Anne and I are starting the long-awaited shower build here at the campground. While Brent *says* he’s fine using the Planet Fitness showers alone, I’m just not ready for that risk while he’s still recovering. We’ve got most of what we need and water delivery lined up. Once it’s done, it’ll be available for us and campers (with a small fee to cover propane and water).

Big thanks to everyone sending love and encouragement. We’re getting there—one day at a time.

Caught on Cam: Cows Invade Off-Grid Campground, Lick Cameras & Cause Chaos in the Desert!

The Real Moochers of the Desert: Life Off-Grid with Free-Range Cattle at Ka-Hoon Campground

Living off-grid in the deep New Mexico desert has its perks—stunning sunsets, wide-open skies, and the sweet sound of silence… until the mooing starts.

Here at **Ka-Hoon Campground**, we’re tucked away just far enough to enjoy peaceful desert life, yet still close enough to civilization to grab tacos when the craving hits. But even in this semi-remote slice of paradise, we get **invaders**—and not the alien kind. We’re talking about the **free-range cattle** who apparently think *our grass is greener*.

Last night, these rogue bovines made a stealthy entrance, clearly plotting an elaborate heist. Step one? **Take out the security system**. We caught them red-tongued—licking and blocking the cameras like seasoned pros. Step two? **Steal the grass**, leave a little *”thank you”* manure, knock over our solar lights for good measure, and give the poles a good rub while they’re at it.

It’s not your typical crime spree, but welcome to **off-grid living in New Mexico**.

Despite their sneaky antics, it’s all part of the charm out here. Life is raw, real, and sometimes full of surprises—some smelly, some solar-powered.

So if you’re dreaming of going off-grid, come prepared. You might escape the hustle of the city… but you won’t escape the cows.

**Ka-Hoon Campground**—where even the cattle want in.

Grateful Mornings and Healing Moments at Ka-Hoon Campground

As I sip my morning coffee and watch the desert sunrise, my heart is full of gratitude. This past week has tested us in ways we never expected—but it’s also reminded us how blessed we are.

While we were at the hospital, our amazing Ka-Hoon community stepped up in big ways. Campers took charge, welcoming new arrivals with kindness and care. My oldest brother helped bring Bryandt home so he could be by his dad’s side. Neighbors made sure Anne got to and from work safely and checked in on things at camp.

And the best news? Brent is home. He’s regaining strength every day. He’s starting to move his fingers again… and yes, *he can sing!* The healing journey isn’t over, but each day brings progress and hope.

To all of you who’ve supported us—thank you. From our family to yours, we’re so grateful to share this space and this journey with such an incredible community.

Surviving the Harsh Desert: Off-Grid Life, Wind Battles & Starry Nights in New Mexico!

**Embracing the Off-Grid Life in the New Mexico Desert**

Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert is a journey of resilience, adaptation, and appreciation for nature’s raw beauty. The challenges are real—relentless winds, shifting sands, and scorching sun test even the most determined. Yet, the rewards far outweigh the struggles.

The vast, open landscape offers a sense of freedom few places can match. Towering mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop, while the night sky, untouched by city lights, becomes a canvas of endless stars. Every evening, the desert transforms, revealing a peaceful, almost mystical energy that makes all the hardships worth enduring.

Each season brings its own battles—spring winds carry dust that seeps into everything, summer heat pushes limits, and winter nights can be bitterly cold. Yet, overcoming these obstacles fosters strength and self-reliance. It’s a lifestyle that demands perseverance but rewards with unmatched tranquility, deeper connections to nature, and a life free from the constraints of modern convenience.

For those seeking a simpler, more intentional way of living, the desert calls. It may not be easy, but the beauty, solitude, and self-sufficiency make it an experience like no other.

Live Music & Camping Under the Stars – Advocatus Diaboli & The Grim Leafer Band at Mini Red Velvet!

**Spring at Plateau Hame De Colquhoun & Upcoming Events**

The days are getting warmer and longer here at **Plateau Hame De Colquhoun LLC**, and we’re gearing up for an exciting season!

**Advocatus Diaboli & The Grim Leafer Band – Live This Sunday!**
This Sunday, **Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band** will be performing live at **Mini Red Velvet Underground**! With three new songs in the works, rehearsals are in full swing—even while battling colds. We’re pushing through to bring you an unforgettable show!

**A Community That Cares at Ka-Hoon Campground**
At **Ka-Hoon Campground**, we’ve been fortunate to host some incredible campers who appreciate the **privacy, security, and sense of community** we offer.

One camper recently shared their experience, suggesting we tell their story:
– They had trouble unhooking their camper, and we were able to provide a jack and assistance.
– Later, their vehicle’s battery died, and thanks to our jumper box (which also tests battery health), we discovered it needed replacing. After a quick jump, they made it to town to purchase a new one.
– They felt **safe and supported**, something we provide naturally but don’t always highlight.

These moments remind us why we created a **membership-based campground**—a place where you can be yourself, have your own space, and rely on a community when needed.

**Booking Reminder – Don’t Just Show Up!**
While we love meeting new people, we ask that all visitors **book in advance** through our website or contact us first. We welcome campers, members, and venue users, but as a **private property** in the middle of the desert, security is a priority—for us, our guests, and our neighbors.

**Members and campers are welcome to have guests**, but please give us a heads-up so we aren’t caught off guard. **We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to hosting you!**

When the Wind Fights Back: Brent’s Injury & the Off-Grid Challenge

**Dealing with Injury Off-Grid: A Tough Start to the Day**

Today looks like it might finally be a nice day, but our focus is on getting Brent to the doctor. We suspect he injured his rotator cuff when the wind caught the studio door while he was trying to close it. At first, he was dealing with the pain, but this week things took a turn for the worse—he lost feeling and grip in his fingers and hand, and now his arm is swollen.

We’ve tried everything: ice, heat, massages, Icy Hot, anti-inflammatories, and exercises we found online—nothing is helping. Brent isn’t one to rush to the doctor, but at this point, it’s become clear that a visit is necessary.

Living off-grid, we’re used to handling things ourselves, but sometimes, you have to know when it’s time to get professional help. Hopefully, we can get some answers and relief for him today.

Stay tuned for updates as we navigate another unexpected challenge in off-grid life.

Surviving High Winds & a Cold Day in the Desert – Off-Grid Life Challenges!

**Surviving the High Winds and a Stubborn Cold—Desert Life Edition**

We’re on **day two** of relentless high winds, and while we’ve learned over the years how to secure just about everything, there’s always something we forget—like an entire **trash bag**, a **clothes hamper full of laundry**, or even **part of a car seat** left behind by a camper. That last one has taken a few trips across the yard, courtesy of Mother Nature, and now it’s on our ever-growing list of things to haul off.

If there’s ever a “perfect” time to be sick, I guess this would be it (though I’d gladly skip the sick part). Both of us have been battling a cold—**negative for flu and COVID**, thankfully—but it’s still draining. No fevers or body aches, but plenty of **sore throats, low energy, and overall crankiness**. And let’s just say my voice is practically nonexistent at this point.

So, how did we spend this windblown, sickness-induced lockdown? **Benadryled up, buried under blankets, and binge-watching *Stranger Things*.** Sometimes, you just have to embrace the forced downtime and let the storm pass—both the one outside and the one raging in your sinuses.

Here’s hoping for **calmer skies, better health, and fewer runaway objects in the yard** in the coming days!
