Dreugan is behind the wheel like *“I know what I’m doing.”* Lurch is riding shotgun, clearly the emotional support passenger. Vibria is standing in the middle like *“I run this car.”*
And me? I’m over here asking for a driver’s license and being completely ignored. No paperwork, no eye contact, just vibes and questionable decision-making.
I don’t know where we’re going, but I’m pretty sure it’s **not** following any traffic laws. 🐕🐕🐕😆
🌵 Resilient in the Desert: Life, Laughter, and Living Off-Grid at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center
Living in the New Mexico desert isn’t easy—and that’s exactly why we love it.
At **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**, off-grid life is a daily lesson in resilience, adaptability, and humor. The sun is intense, the wind has opinions, and nature does not care about schedules. Yet somehow, between solar panels, dirt roads, music, and dogs underfoot, a deep sense of peace and purpose grows.
Desert living teaches you quickly that resilience isn’t about toughness alone—it’s about learning when to laugh, when to slow down, and when to simply roll with whatever the desert throws your way.
Being off-grid means solving problems creatively. Power comes from the sun, not a switch. Plans change with the weather. Convenience is replaced with intention. And while it can be challenging, it’s also incredibly grounding. Life feels real out here—raw, honest, and stripped of unnecessary noise.
Our **Offgrid Talk** grew naturally from this lifestyle. It’s not about pretending we have all the answers—it’s about sharing real conversations, real struggles, and real wins that come with choosing a different way of living. Some mornings it’s reflective, some mornings it’s humorous, and some mornings it’s simply about surviving the desert with coffee and determination.
Then there’s **Music in the Desert**—because resilience also needs joy. Music echoes differently out here, carried by open skies and wide horizons. It brings people together, reminds us to celebrate, and proves that creativity thrives even in the harshest environments.
And of course, no desert homestead story is complete without dogs. They don’t care about heat, dust, or broken plans. They play hard, rest harder, and remind us daily that balance matters. Their pack mentality mirrors off-grid life perfectly—different personalities, different energy levels, all coexisting and adapting together.
Living in the desert teaches you to be flexible, resourceful, and humble. It teaches you that resilience isn’t loud or dramatic—it’s built quietly, day by day, through persistence, humor, and community.
At Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center, resilience isn’t just a concept. It’s a lifestyle. And while the desert may test you, it also gives back clarity, connection, and a freedom that’s hard to find anywhere else.
If you can laugh when the wind knocks things over, adapt when plans fall apart, and find joy under endless skies—you just might be desert-resilient too.
🌵 How a Dirt Road Adventure Became Plateau Hame de Colquhoun
Six years ago, while our family was working a winter ranch job in **New Mexico**, we quietly began what would become a life-changing journey. Every spare dollar was being saved with one goal in mind — **buy land to create our own event center**.
For years, we had **site managed for other venues**, helping build dreams for others. Eventually, we realized it was time to build something for ourselves — something rooted in creativity, music, community, and freedom.
Our original dream was **Minnesota**, but reality set in quickly. Land prices, harsh winters, and short seasons meant we’d only be open a few months a year. **New Mexico**, on the other hand, offered affordability, open space, and weather that allowed us to be open **year-round**.
That realization changed everything.
—
🌄 The Land Hunt — and the Adventure to Get There
After looking at multiple properties, none truly felt right. Some were close to highways but lacked soul. Others were accessible but restrictive. Then we found *the one* — listed by a realtor we believe was based out of **New York**.
When we called, he warned us:
> *“You don’t want that one — it’s down some dirt roads.”*
That didn’t scare us. The property was **only 42 miles from Albuquerque**, had **no noise ordinances**, and required no complicated permits. To us, it sounded almost perfect.
So we set out early one morning from **Ruidoso to Belen**, planning to look at several pieces of land. The first few weren’t terrible, but they just didn’t feel right.
Then came the journey to the land we now own — and **that was an adventure all its own**.
—
🧭 GPS Lies, Arroyos, and Dead-End Roads
Following GPS turned into a wild goose chase. It led us down **dead-end roads in the middle of nowhere**, far from anything familiar. At one point, GPS took us straight toward an **arroyo**, and we **almost got stuck** trying to turn around.
Another route sent us down a road **filled with trash**. Instead of turning back right away, we stopped and **cleaned up the area**, only to realize after all that effort that the road went absolutely nowhere.
No exit. No turnaround. Just desert silence.
We were frustrated, tired, and close to giving up.
But then — we found better roads.
—
🌌 Love at First Sight — Even in the Dark
By the time we finally arrived at the property, it was **after dark**.
And yet… I fell in love instantly.
Standing there, looking out over the valley with **city lights glowing below**, the view was breathtaking. Quiet. Powerful. It felt like home.
Still, we knew we had to see it in daylight.
So we scheduled another trip, making this land our priority.
—
🌞 Daylight Confirmed What Our Hearts Already Knew
When we returned during the day, we fell even harder. The land was expansive, peaceful, and full of possibility. This wasn’t just property — it was a blank canvas.
This would become **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun LLC**, home to **Ka-Hoon Campground** and **Ka-Hoon Event Center**.
—
💔 Almost Lost — Then Everything Changed
When we called the realtor to say we wanted the land and could pay immediately, our hearts sank.
Someone else had claimed it.
We sat there defeated, feeling like we had lost a battle — and then, **less than five minutes later**, the phone rang again.
*“The land is yours.”*
It took a moment to sink in. Then adrenaline kicked in. Debit card already in hand.
**The land was ours.**
—
🎶 Six Years Later — A Dream Built Off-Grid
That moment happened on **January 5th, 2020** — six years ago.
Today, that once-hard-to-reach land is home to:
* **Colquhoun Entertainment** * **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun LLC** * **Ka-Hoon Campground** * **Ka-Hoon Event Center** * **Music in the Desert** * **Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band** * **Melodie’s Oddities** * **Dusty Nail General Store** * **Offgrid Talk** * **Melodious**, tying it all together
What began as a risky drive down dirt roads — through arroyos, trash-filled paths, and wrong turns — became a place where **music echoes**, **off-grid living thrives**, and **community is built under desert skies**.
🔆 Another Day Building Our 5K Off-Grid Solar System
Building off-grid infrastructure is never as simple as it looks on paper — and today was a perfect example of that.
We spent another long day working on our **5K solar power system**, a critical part of keeping our off-grid campground and event space running sustainably. While we were excited to finally get everything installed, the process came with an unexpected challenge right out of the gate.
The frame that was purchased with the solar panels turned out to be **missing several major components**, parts that were essential to assembling the system safely and correctly. Unfortunately, replacements for those components weren’t available anywhere, which meant we had no choice but to **redesign the entire setup from scratch**.
Redesigning a solar system mid-build isn’t ideal, but off-grid life teaches you flexibility fast. After reassessing the structure, sourcing alternative parts, and adjusting the layout, we were finally able to move forward.
By the end of the day — just before the sun dipped below the horizon — we successfully completed **one full solar unit and got it installed into place**. Seeing it standing and ready was a huge win after the setbacks earlier in the day.
Every step like this brings us closer to a stronger, more reliable **off-grid solar power system**, helping us reduce reliance on generators and keep our desert operation running efficiently. Progress may not always be fast, but it’s always worth it.
Stay tuned — there’s much more solar work ahead as we continue building a resilient, sustainable future off-grid.
