đ„ Raking the Desert for Magic! Preparing the Sand for Our Rangoli of Intentions đ
Preparing the Desert for the Rangoli: Raking the Ground for Our Night of Intentions
As we prepare for our **Rangoli celebration on November 1st** at **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**, the desert is becoming our canvas. This night is all about **manifesting goals, intentions, and personal transformation** beneath the wide New Mexico sky.
Instead of using chalk or powders, weâll be **drawing directly into the sand**âletting the natural earth guide our designs. Each participant will create their own **Rangoli of Intentions**, using simple tools or even their hands to carve symbols that represent what they want to attract, release, or change in their lives.
To prepare, weâve begun our **first raking of the ground**, softening and smoothing the desert floor so itâs ready for creation. The process itself feels symbolicâclearing away the old to make space for new energy.
When the Rangolis are complete, weâll gather around the **bonfire**, dance, and celebrate the intentions weâve set together. The night will blend **art, energy, and community**, bringing light and purpose to the desert sands.
Join us for this one-of-a-kind off-grid experienceâwhere the earth itself becomes the medium for manifestation.

Living on an Island in the Sky đ The Stunning Edge of the Mesa Overlooking the Rio Grande Valley
**Life on Our Island in the Sky â The Mesa Overlooking the Rio Grande Valley**
If youâve followed our blog, watched our videos, or joined our livestreams, youâve likely heard us describe our home as an *âisland in the sky.â* What we mean by that is the mesa where we liveâan elevated desert landscape with sweeping views and a beauty all its own.
Over the past months, weâve taken you along the edge of this mesa during livestreams, and shared photos and clips that capture just a glimpse of the experience. But seeing it in person is something truly unforgettable. The edge drops off dramatically, opening to the breathtaking Rio Grande Valley below. Itâs a reminder of the raw, natural power of the desert and why we chose this lifestyle in the first place.
Living off-grid on a mesa comes with its challengesâwind, isolation, and rugged terrainâbut it also offers freedom, peace, and connection to nature that canât be matched. Every sunrise and sunset feels like a gift when it stretches across the valley floor, painting the sky in colors that pictures never fully capture.
For us, sharing this journey isnât just about showing the viewsâitâs about inviting you into the off-grid lifestyle, the lessons weâve learned, and the beauty that makes it worthwhile. Whether youâre interested in off-grid living yourself or simply curious about life on the mesa, we hope our stories inspire you.
Stay tuned for more videos, livestreams, and photos as we continue exploring and sharing our island in the sky.

Are 4 Dogs a Sign of Poverty or True Wealth? Living Rich Without Money in the Desert đ”đŸ
True Wealth Isnât Money â Itâs Living Fully
My dad always said, *âYou can tell how poor someone is by the number of dogs they have.â* Well, here we are again with four dogs. Does that make us really poor? Financially, sureâweâre not rich by any means. But if I could live without money, Iâd be perfectly happy.
The truth is, how much money you do or donât have doesnât define your wealth. A rich man can be poor in spirit, unhappy in life, and never truly free. On the other hand, someone with very little money can live a life overflowing with joy, love, and meaning.
For me, real wealth is found in living the life weâve built out here in the desert. We created our land so people from all walks of life can come together, feel safe, and simply be themselves. Itâs a place to laugh, to connect, to meet new friends, and to escape the pressure of the outside world.
That, my friends, is wealth. Not in a bank accountâbut in the heart, in the connections we share, and in the freedom to live authentically.

West Mesa Ancestral Magic

Weâve been told the mesa holds ancient magic â a power that predates us all. Where it came from, I donât know. But I believe it’s real. Thereâs something about this place that feels alive, almost sentient.
When I was a child, I visited my favorite museum on Mille Lacs Lake in Minnesota. It was there I met an old Sioux woman. She told me something that stayed with me my entire life â that where two rivers meet is sacred. Protected. Watched over by unseen forces.
Here on the West Mesa, we are flanked by rivers on both sides. And not far to the south, they meet. That energy â sacred and powerful â is in the land.
A very wise local man, someone we deeply respect and whoâs lived here longer than anyone else we know, once told us something even more curious. He said the mesa itself has a will. It can approve of you⊠or reject you. And even if it approves, it still makes you work for your place here. You must prove yourself worthy to stay.
If the mesa doesnât approve? Well, weâve seen what happens.
Some people go mad â slowly at first, hanging on for years before their grip slips. As I like to say, their cheese finally slides off their cracker. Others unravel much faster. This place doesnât just test you â it chooses you.
There is magic here. Ancestral magic. Whether it comes from the land, the rivers, the spirits, or something older â I may never truly know. But I respect it. And I know better than to ignore it.
BEWARE of ‘Free’ Off-Grid Living Offers đł What They’re NOT Telling You!
Free or Low-Cost Stays Are on the RiseâBut Are They Safe or Sustainable?**
In recent months, thereâs been a noticeable rise in communities and landowners offering **free or low-cost places to live**âfrom RV spots and tent camping, to off-grid setups, tiny home villages, and communal land projects. This trend is gaining momentum, especially as the national conversation around homelessness has shifted dramatically. With recent legislation signed into law making aspects of **homelessness illegal** in certain jurisdictions (such as Trump’s support of bills that criminalize encampments in public spaces), more people are seeking alternatives before they’re pushed into crisis.
But with this wave of new options, comes a critical reminder: **not all opportunities are created with your best interest in mind.**
### Free Isnât Always Free
Some of these places offer stays in tents, vehicles, or campers for little to no cost. Others promise a safe, off-grid lifestyle in exchange for a bit of labor or financial contribution. But hereâs the truth: **just because itâs free or cheap doesnât mean itâs the right fitâor even safe.** In some cases, people arrive with high hopes only to find poor living conditions, unclear rules, or outright scams.
### Research Is Your Best Friend
Before committing to any place offering low-cost or free accommodations, **do your homework**:
* **Google them.** Look up the name of the place and add “reviews” or “scam” to see what comes up.
* **Check social media.** Most reputable places have a public presence. See how active and transparent they are.
* **Visit if possible.** If they offer short stays on platforms like **Airbnb, Hipcamp, or The Dyrt**, consider trying a night or weekend before committing long-term.
* **Ask questions.** Email or call. You should never have to pay or âsubscribeâ just to get basic information.
* **Make a list.** Ask about water access, power, rules, communication, transportation, visitors, pets, and exit plans.
### Know What You’re Signing Up For
Itâs important to know if youâll be expected to work in exchange for your stay, and what that means. Some people are okay with trading a few hours of work for a space to park their RVâothers may feel uncomfortable if the workload isnât clearly defined or becomes excessive.
For example, **at our own location**, we offer **limited long-term stays through a membership program**. Members must be **fully self-contained**, meaning they need to bring their own water, have their own vehicle, and manage their own waste systems. We donât offer work exchange, but weâre upfront about the expectationsâbecause transparency matters.
### Final Thoughts
These types of communities can be beautiful, healing placesâbut **you have to make sure they align with your needs and values**. What might feel like freedom at first glance can become frustrating if the structure, expectations, or environment donât suit your lifestyle.
**Free or cheap isnât always better.** Ask questions, get details, and make sure the space is one where you can truly thriveânot just survive.

Caught on Cam: Cows Invade Off-Grid Campground, Lick Cameras & Cause Chaos in the Desert!
The Real Moochers of the Desert: Life Off-Grid with Free-Range Cattle at Ka-Hoon Campground
Living off-grid in the deep New Mexico desert has its perksâstunning sunsets, wide-open skies, and the sweet sound of silence⊠until the mooing starts.
Here at **Ka-Hoon Campground**, weâre tucked away just far enough to enjoy peaceful desert life, yet still close enough to civilization to grab tacos when the craving hits. But even in this semi-remote slice of paradise, we get **invaders**âand not the alien kind. Weâre talking about the **free-range cattle** who apparently think *our grass is greener*.
Last night, these rogue bovines made a stealthy entrance, clearly plotting an elaborate heist. Step one? **Take out the security system**. We caught them red-tonguedâlicking and blocking the cameras like seasoned pros. Step two? **Steal the grass**, leave a little *”thank you”* manure, knock over our solar lights for good measure, and give the poles a good rub while theyâre at it.
Itâs not your typical crime spree, but welcome to **off-grid living in New Mexico**.
Despite their sneaky antics, itâs all part of the charm out here. Life is raw, real, and sometimes full of surprisesâsome smelly, some solar-powered.
So if you’re dreaming of going off-grid, come prepared. You might escape the hustle of the city⊠but you wonât escape the cows.
**Ka-Hoon Campground**âwhere even the cattle want in.
