🐍 Rattlesnake Encounter in Off-Grid Dog Yard (Real Incident Report)

🌵 Introduction

It’s been an eventful week at Colquhoun Entertainment & Ka-Hoon Campground & Event Center, reminding us that off-grid living is unpredictable, raw, and always full of lessons from nature.

🐍 The Rattlesnake Incident

For the first time since living here, a rattlesnake entered the dog yard—an area with constant human and animal activity.

The snake was found:

• Curled beside a dog water bowl
• During an extreme dry period (less than 1 inch of rain all year)
• Likely searching for water in harsh desert conditions

Unfortunately, for the safety of our animals, the snake had to be dispatched.

🐶 Dog Exposure & Immediate Response

Two dogs encountered the snake.

Initial Response

• Immediate physical checks for bite marks
• No puncture wounds found on either dog
• No visible swelling at first

Even on Lurch, no bite marks were ever identified.

⏱️ Delayed Reaction in Lurch

About an hour later:

• Swelling developed around face and neck
• Dog remained:
  • Alert
  • Responsive
  • Eating and drinking normally

Veterinary consultation suggested:

• Likely dry bite or very low venom exposure
• Monitoring at home was appropriate
• Bring in only if symptoms worsened

Thankfully, Lurch is now:

• Fully recovering
• Back to normal play behavior
• Showing significant reduction in swelling

🐕 Vibria’s Outcome

• Also bitten
• No visible symptoms
• No behavioral or physical reaction observed
• Fully normal throughout recovery period

🌿 What This Teaches About Off-Grid Living

This incident reinforced important homestead principles:

🐭 Environmental Balance

• Cats help control rodents
• Lizards naturally reduce insect populations
• Clutter reduction limits hiding spaces for wildlife

🐍 Wildlife Awareness

Snakes are part of the ecosystem, but:

• Human activity areas must be managed carefully
• Water sources can unintentionally attract wildlife

💧 Key Change Implemented

Outdoor Water Bowl Adjustment:

• Dogs still have 24/7 indoor water access
• Outdoor water remains available during the day
• Outdoor bowls will now be emptied each night

Purpose:

• Reduce nighttime wildlife attraction
• Prevent repeat snake visits near living areas

🐾 Animal Instincts & Learning

Observations:

• Dreugan (older dog): recognized threat and avoided snake
• Vibria (2 years old): limited reaction, no symptoms
• Lurch (newer dog): inexperienced with rattlesnakes, hardest lesson

This highlights how experience plays a major role in animal survival instincts.

Living off-grid means:

• Sharing space with wildlife
• Making quick decisions under pressure
• Learning from every encounter

Most days are peaceful—but sometimes nature reminds us that survival is a shared system, not a controlled one.
