Day One in New Mexico: Rain and Puddles at Ka-Hoon Campground

Day One of Polo’s visit to New Mexico started with something we certainly didn’t expect to become such a big part of the story: rain and puddles at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center.

Located in Central New Mexico, Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center is an off-grid campground surrounded by mesa landscapes and the wide-open scenery of the Rio Grande Valley. When the rain arrives, the landscape can look completely different.

Day One at Ka-Hoon Campground

Polo was just getting started with the visit when the weather began changing. The first puddles started appearing around the campground, creating reflections across the ground and giving us a completely different view of the New Mexico landscape.

For a place known for its dry, rugged surroundings, watching rainwater collect across the campground is something worth documenting. These first puddles became the beginning of a much bigger weather story.

Rain in the desert can create a dramatic transformation. The puddles in this video are from Day One, giving us a starting point for following the weather as the rain continued.

Off-Grid Camping in Central New Mexico

Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center offers an off-grid camping experience in Central New Mexico. There is something special about seeing the property in different weather conditions.

Sunshine, clouds, storms, wind, and rain can each completely change the appearance and atmosphere of the mesa. This video captures one small moment from the beginning of Polo’s visit.

Day One Was Just the Beginning

These puddles were only the beginning of the weather story. As the rain continued, conditions around the campground changed, which is why we wanted to capture these early moments—from the first puddles on Day One through whatever came next.

Sometimes the unexpected parts of a camping trip become the most memorable. What started as a rainy day became another chapter in the ongoing story of life at Ka-Hoon.
