It doesn’t breeze. It doesn’t drift. It arrives — like it owns the place and we forgot to check the lease.
The wind out here has a personality disorder. One minute: postcard sunset. Next minute: airborne lawn chairs, missing dog bowls, and me chasing a trash can across open land like a low-budget western.
It rattles the RV so hard you start mentally apologizing to every bolt you’ve ever tightened.
I used to hate it.
I’d sit there counting gusts, waiting for the walls to peel off and my life to end on a weather report.
But somewhere along the way the fear turned into rhythm.
The RV rocks at night — not gently, not romantically — more like a drunk uncle trying to dance, and somehow… I sleep better.
Because the truth is:
Nothing fake survives out here.
The wind steals weak plans, bad attitudes, and anything not actually secured. It’s basically nature’s personality test.
City life has locks. The desert has proof.
The same wind that throws sand in your coffee also cools a 105° afternoon, carries music farther than speakers should reach, and reminds you you are very small and somehow very alive.
We didn’t move here for comfort. We moved here for honesty.
The wind isn’t trying to ruin us.
It’s just asking daily:
“You still sure about this life?”
Every morning we wake up still here, still stubborn, still slightly covered in dust.
Rocked, not broken.
Turns out — the wind lives here.
We’re just the weird people it hasn’t managed to evict yet.
Today at NOON MST, step away from the fluorescent lights, emails, and reheated leftovers and join us for a relaxed mid-day livestream — Off-Grid Talk with Melodious.
Broadcasting straight from the New Mexico desert at Plateau Hame de Colquhoun, this isn’t a podcast, and it isn’t a lecture. It’s more like sitting outside with friends while solar panels hum, coffee brews, and dogs supervise absolutely everything.
We’ll be talking about: • real off-grid living • solar life and daily challenges • RV and desert living • weird stories from the middle of nowhere • whatever the dogs decide is important
Bring your lunch. Bring your coffee. Or just bring your need to mentally escape work for a little while.
If you’ve watched our latest video, you probably heard the question we get constantly:
“Why does a campground need a membership?”
Fair question.
Most campgrounds are designed for temporary stays. You pull in, set up, stay a few days, and then move along. You might wave to your neighbors… but by the time you learn their name, they’re already packing up.
We realized something.
We weren’t trying to create a place people visit. We were trying to create a place people belong.
At Ka-Hoon Campground – Plateau Hame de Colquhoun, we kept meeting incredible travelers, off-gridders, artists, musicians, and people looking for a quieter life. But the structure of a normal campground meant they had to leave just when friendships started forming.
So we changed the model.
What the Membership Actually Is
The membership isn’t a resort pass. It isn’t a timeshare. It isn’t an HOA.
It’s simply how we keep a stable community instead of a revolving parking lot.
Instead of strict campground policies, our philosophy is simple:
Respect is the rule.
We don’t want a place full of paperwork and enforcement — we want a place where people naturally look out for each other, share skills, and create something together.
What Makes It Different
Our members aren’t just campers. They become part of daily life here.
People garden. People build projects. People share meals. People play music. People host events.
We host regular activities including:
People build projects.
People share meals.
People play music.
People host events.
We host regular activities including:
Music in the Desert live shows
Karaoke nights
Movies and gatherings
Seasonal events
Some members stay a short time. Some stay much longer.
The goal was never to build a campground. The goal was to build a community where people can slow down and live differently.
Who It’s For
This place tends to attract:
Off-grid and solar living enthusiasts
RV and van lifers
Tiny home travelers
Creatives and makers
People escaping strict HOA living
Anyone wanting a quieter, more intentional environment
It’s not luxury camping. It’s not a party resort. It’s a shared space built on mutual respect.
Why We Made the Video
Because the word “membership” confuses people.
It sounds formal — but the reality is the opposite. The membership simply allows us to know who is here, keep the environment safe, and maintain a few real community members rather than alway constantly changing campground.
If you’re looking for a place to just park , we offer multiple platforms to book through
If you’re looking for a place to settle for a while and meet people who actually know your name — you probably understand immediately.
**Moonlit Desert Magic at Ka-Hoon Campground: When Sand Looks Like Snow**
Last night, I stepped outside expecting the quiet desert darkness… but instead, it looked like we had gotten a dusting of snow. The ground had a soft, white glow to it—like winter had somehow crept into the New Mexico desert.
But it wasn’t snow at all. It was the **moonlight hitting the sand**, turning the desert floor into a pale, shimmering landscape. It was one of those off-grid moments where nature plays tricks on you in the best way.
Out here at **Ka-Hoon Campground**, every day—and every night—brings something unexpected. The desert has its own personality, its own humor, and its own beauty that shows up when you least expect it.
**Comment below:** Would YOU have thought it was snow if you stepped out and saw the desert glowing white in the moonlight?
**Off-Grid Life at Ka-Hoon Campground: Dust Devils, Dogs, and Desert Adventures**
Life at **Ka-Hoon Campground** is always full of surprises. Today, Dreugan delivered his dramatic deep-narrator update: *“Welcome back to the desert, where Mom says everything is peaceful—but I just watched the solar system try to fight a dust devil.”*
Meanwhile, little Vibria—fearless as ever—made things even more interesting by trying to eat the dust devil. Out here, even the weather becomes part of the adventure.
Living off-grid isn’t just peaceful; it’s unpredictable, hilarious, and full of personality. Every day brings new stories, new challenges, and new moments worth sharing.
If you love off-grid life, desert vibes, cute pets, and a little chaos, Ka-Hoon Campground is the place to be.
The Thanksgiving Thank-You I Never Got to Give — And Still Carry With Me**
**Plateau Hame de Colquhoun • Ka-Hoon Campground & Event Center • Colquhoun Entertainment**
Thanksgiving is the season for giving thanks… but sometimes the things we’re most thankful for are also the ones we look back on with a little regret. This week, as I walked across the quiet desert at **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**, something heavy but heartfelt came to mind — a thank-you I never got to give.
When I was a young, naïve 21-year-old in college in Arkansas, I met someone who changed my world for a little while. His name was **Billy**.
Billy quickly became my best friend. We watched movies, hung out between classes, took spontaneous adventures — even spent Spring Break exploring Mississippi together. He was kind, funny, patient, and one of the first people who made me feel truly understood.
But I was young. And honestly? I didn’t know what I didn’t know.
Billy had told me he cared about me, but I didn’t recognize the hints. I saw him as my best friend — nothing more, nothing less. My parents warned me, “You can’t change him,” and I didn’t understand, because I loved him exactly as he was. I wasn’t trying to change anything. I just didn’t understand the depth of what he felt for me at the time.
Eventually, life moved on. I met someone, got married, and that’s when Billy told me he couldn’t stay in my life anymore. He said it felt *awkward*.
I didn’t understand then why my best friend couldn’t stay my best friend.
But years later — after growing up, after life knocked me around a bit, after I learned how complicated hearts can be — I finally understood. And that realization stayed with me.
I’ve tried searching for him over the years, off and on, but without remembering his last name, it’s been next to impossible.
So this Thanksgiving, I’m putting this out into the world:
**Billy, if you’re out there, I’m sorry.** I truly had no idea what you were trying to tell me back then. I treasure the friendship we had, and I hope your life turned out full of the happiness you deserved. And if you ever read this — I’d still love to reconnect, even just to say thank you.
Sometimes the people who help shape us never get to hear the impact they left behind.
This year, that’s my Thanksgiving reflection — gratitude for someone from long ago, and a hope that maybe this message finds its way home.
While heading into town, we caught a couple of guys trying to dump some old furniture out in the desert. Living off-grid means respecting the land that gives us peace — and littering isn’t part of that! After a “friendly chat,” they picked it all back up. It’s moments like these that remind us why community and respect for nature matter. Here at Ka-Hoon Campground, we take pride in keeping our desert clean, peaceful, and full of life.
Life off-grid at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center isn’t just about humans enjoying the desert—it’s also home to our furry family! Vibria, Dreugan, and Lurch love to play together safely inside their pen after a long day of guarding the homestead. We keep our dogs in a secured area for their safety and to respect the campground rules—no loose pets for everyone’s comfort and protection. Even so, that doesn’t stop the fun! Watch as they chase, tumble, and show off their desert joy from their play space here at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center.
Desert Nap Champions — Our Dogs Perfect the Art of Sunbathing ☀️🐾
Even in the desert, life finds its rhythm — and for our furry family at **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**, that rhythm is *nap, stretch, repeat.*
These off-grid pups have truly mastered the art of soaking up the sun. With no stress, no schedules, and no worries, they remind us daily that sometimes the best use of solar power is a good nap.
Out here, every day is an adventure — but even adventurers need their rest. Whether it’s Vibria, Dreugan, or one of the other four-legged members of the Colquhoun crew, they always find the perfect sunny spot for a little desert downtime.
If only we humans could relax this hard! 😂 Enjoy this lighthearted moment from life off-grid and remember: *take a break, enjoy the sun, and nap like nobody’s watching.*
