Campground Shower Build Progress: Teamwork, Challenges, and Big Plans for Off-Grid Living!

Today was a huge milestone for our off-grid shower project at Ka-Hoon Plateau Hame De Colquhoun ! We tackled the hardest part—getting the 350-gallon IBC tote lifted, aligned, and secured on top of the first one to build our campground shower system. It was definitely more than Anne and I could handle alone, but with Brent’s help (and some neighborly support), we made it happen!

Once we figured out how to lift, turn, and line up the tote, a neighbor arrived just in time to help us cut the door and anchor everything down securely. We’re so grateful for the community support—this project wouldn’t have been possible without it!

Next steps include adjusting the plastic liners, installing an additional liner piece to lock everything into place, building a door, and plumbing the water heater and shower head. We’re also planning to add a small changing area outside the shower space, with hopes of someday installing a washing machine to make off-grid life even more comfortable for our campers and ourselves.

Every step we take brings us closer to improving the campground experience here in the New Mexico desert. This off-grid DIY shower will be available for campers to use for a small fee to help cover water and propane costs.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue building forward—one project, and one day, at a time!

Why We Don’t Ask for Donations & How You Can Support Ka-Hoon Campground in Other Ways!

Supporting Ka-Hoon Campground: Ways to Help

Lately, we’ve received a few emails asking if we would set up a CashApp, Venmo, or even an Amazon Wishlist for donations. While we truly appreciate the thought, we’ve always been independent and prefer to earn our way. However, we understand that some of you genuinely want to support us, so we’ve been brainstorming ways to make that possible while staying true to our values.

We know times are tough for many, and uncertainty is everywhere. If you’d like to support us but can’t camp, attend an event, or visit in person, we suggest sponsoring a membership. This not only helps us but also provides an opportunity for someone else—a family or individual—to have a safe place to set up their homestead or simply enjoy a space where they can be themselves.

As for the Amazon Wishlist, we’re not sure what we’d include. Would campers and members benefit from extra tents, cooking supplies, or maybe some essentials for the dogs? Our storage space is limited, so we’d love input on what might actually be useful.

We’re not wealthy—funds are always tight—but we’ve built everything we have through hard work and determination. We’ve occasionally received small donations from campers, which we see as tips for the experience we provide, and we’re completely okay with that. However, we don’t feel comfortable simply accepting money or gifts without giving something in return.

If you truly want to help but can’t visit, the best ways to support us are:
✔️ Sponsor a membership to help others access our space.
✔️ Share our website and videos to help more people find us.

If you think we should create an Amazon Wishlist, let us know what items would be most useful! One camper donated some ready-to-eat meals (REMs), which we’ve shared with campers and community members—and, admittedly, enjoyed ourselves!

Your support, in any form, means the world to us. Thank you for being part of our journey!

Living Off-Grid: Day 1516 – Embracing the True Spirit of the Holiday Season with Kindness and Giving

Living Off-Grid: Day 1516 in New Mexico – The True Spirit of the Holiday Season

As we reach day 1516 of living off-grid in the New Mexico desert, the days grow shorter and the nights longer. The holiday season is upon us, and it’s a time to reflect on what truly matters. For many, the holidays evoke images of gifts and extravagant celebrations. But it’s important to remember that not everyone celebrates the holidays the same way—or even has the means to.

The holidays aren’t about the cost or popularity of a gift. They’re about giving, kindness, and helping those in need. However, giving doesn’t have to mean donating to charities where only a fraction of your contribution goes to the people who need it most. Nor does it mean putting yourself or your family at financial or personal risk.

### Simple Ways to Give

There are countless ways to embrace the spirit of giving this season:
– **Be kind and respectful.** A small act of kindness can make a big difference.
– **Give intentionally.** Instead of buying flashy gifts your children may never use, consider what they genuinely need or will enjoy long-term.
– **Teach lessons of empathy.** Help your children understand that hardship can happen to anyone—regardless of wealth, job stability, or lifestyle. Life is unpredictable, and we are all just one accident, storm, illness, or conflict away from facing adversity.

### Think Beyond Materialism

This year, instead of rushing to buy the most sought-after items, consider giving in ways that truly matter:
– Donate a blanket or warm clothing to someone in need.
– Contribute to food drives that directly help local families.
– Research and support charities that ensure your contributions go directly to those in need.

The holidays are about more than material gifts; they are about showing compassion, building community, and reminding each other of our shared humanity. Let’s make this season one of kindness, connection, and genuine care for those around us.

Experiencing the Albuquerque Balloon Festival: Morning Glow, Drone Show, and Neighborly Support!

**Our Experience at the Albuquerque Balloon Festival: A Testament to Good Neighbors**

A few days ago, a neighbor asked if we’d be interested in going to the Albuquerque Balloon Festival. As much as it sounded like a blast, we had campers arriving, and the big question was, what about the dogs?

After some thoughtful discussions with multiple neighbors, we came up with a plan. With their help, we decided we could head out for the early morning Glow and drone show and be back around noon—just in time to manage things with the campers. One neighbor even offered to come by and let the dogs out, which sealed the deal.

The catch? We had to leave around 2 a.m. That meant waking up at 1 a.m., brewing some coffee, feeding the dogs, and letting them get in some early morning playtime before we headed out.

Now that we’re home, the dogs are happy, we’re a bit tired, but we took a short nap and are now unwinding with some football.

The moral of the story? There’s nothing like having neighbors, friends, or family who are there to help make things possible. Without their support, we wouldn’t have been able to attend the festival, which made the experience even more special. We’re grateful for these wonderful neighbors and are excited to share our day with them and all of you!

**Key takeaway:** Good neighbors make life’s adventures even better!

1984 F250 Pickup Troubles: How Our Desert Neighbors Saved the Day!

**The Unexpected Support of Desert Neighbors: Our 1984 F250 Pickup Adventure**

A few weeks ago, our 1984 F250 diesel pickup broke down in the post office parking lot. Thanks to a generous neighbor, we were towed home and began an intense search for the issue. Despite replacing the starter solenoid, neutral safety switch, and repairing gears on the ignition, the truck still refused to start.

Our neighbor’s research led to the discovery of an elusive “ignition brain” specific to the 1984 model. Although he’d only heard about it once before, replacing this component finally got the truck running. We’re incredibly grateful for the support of our desert neighbors.

Living in a larger town, we often felt judged and isolated despite being close to others. In our small desert community, we’ve found a sense of acceptance and belonging that we hadn’t experienced before. While there have been a few negative encounters, they don’t overshadow the genuine connections we’ve made. Our desert home has proven to be a place of true community and support.

Desert Community Rallies Together: Home Dialysis Help & BBQ Fun!

**Community Support and Togetherness in the Desert**

As previously discussed, having a supportive community is vital, especially in the remote desert where assistance from state and county officials can be challenging to obtain. Here, our neighbors have become more than just people living nearby; they are family.

One of our neighbors, who undergoes dialysis in Albuquerque three times a week, faced financial strain due to the travel expenses. Recently, he was approved for home dialysis, but needed to make some modifications to his home. In response, our community rallied together to help. We removed cabinets and benches to make space for the new equipment and uncovered additional issues that will require future attention.

We extend our gratitude to Red Gorilla Studios for their generous donation of a recliner, which is essential for his treatment.

After a few hours of hard work, we celebrated with a BBQ, practiced archery, enjoyed some music, and relaxed together. This sense of community support and togetherness makes all the difference in our lives out here.

Community Rally: From Pickup Truck Troubles to Rocking Red Gorilla Studios!

**Today’s the Day: Heading to Red Gorilla Studios!**

Today, the team from Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center, along with a few campers, is excited to head to Red Gorilla Studios in Albuquerque for the Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band show!

We had a bit of a hiccup as our pickup truck broke down at the post office in town yesterday. Fortunately, our amazing community of neighbors stepped up and towed it home. After some investigation, we discovered that the starter solenoid had gone out. We’ve ordered a new one, but in the meantime, our generous neighbors are towing our trailer for us.

Living out here, our community has evolved from a group of strangers into a close-knit family. Despite occasional disagreements, it’s heartwarming to know we can rely on each other. We’re grateful to be part of this supportive community and look forward to the show!

Embrace Diversity at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center

We have once again encountered claims against us, specifically that we are satanic. To clarify, we are neither religious nor satanic. We are spiritual and believe in protecting and living harmoniously with nature. We embrace our differences and believe everyone should be allowed to be themselves.

Our belief is in allowing people to enjoy life, regardless of their beliefs, sexuality, or political choices. We respect everyone for being who they are.

We enjoy laughing, talking, and being ourselves, and we welcome everyone. Unfortunately, this sometimes causes issues for others.

Our space is designed for everyone to come and safely be themselves, free from judgment and ridicule. If some locals interpret this as something negative, it is a sad reflection on the broader community.

Monsoon Adventures: Community Spirit in the New Mexico Desert

Navigating Monsoon Season in the New Mexico Desert

Living in the New Mexico desert has its unique challenges, especially during monsoon season. Today was a prime example as we had to head out for water, showers, and a few groceries, all while trying to beat the next wave of storms.

The muddy roads made the trip especially slow, but we knew waiting for more rain would make them even worse. As we made our way back home, we saw a cluster of police lights. Approaching the scene, we discovered a pickup had rolled into a ditch. Our hearts sank when we realized it was someone we knew, a member of our community. Fortunately, he wasn’t hurt, and we were able to give him a ride home.

This experience was a stark reminder of the difficulties we face living here, but also of the strong community spirit that helps us get through these challenges together.
