Caught on Camera: Our First Months Off-Grid and an Unexpected Visitor!
When we first moved to the desert, every day was a new challenge â and a lesson in staying prepared. During our early months at **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun (Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center)**, we installed a security camera before heading into town, knowing that trips werenât quick and our belongings were left vulnerable.
Not long after, that camera paid off. We caught a visitor on video trying to walk off with something that didnât belong to them! Thankfully, we had chained the axles of our trailer, and it was empty at the time â that same trailer later became what we now call **The Hut**, our compost toilet.
It was one of those off-grid moments that reminds you why preparation matters. Every experience â even the tough ones â helped shape who we are today.
Now, as we celebrate **five years off-grid**, we invite you to join us for our **5th Anniversary Open Mic Night** on **Saturday, October 18th**. Come in person, stay for a night or a weekend, or tune in live from home on our **Colquhoun Entertainment TikTok** profile.
Life off-grid isnât always easy â but every story, every lesson, and every bit of resilience makes it worth it.

Lost in the Desert? GPS Roads That Donât Exist | Our Off-Grid Journey đ§đ”
When GPS Roads Donât Exist: Finding Our Way Off-Grid in New Mexico
Hereâs another **video from the vault**! When we first started our off-grid journey, one of the biggest challenges wasnât just the desert heat or the windâit was simply finding our way home.
GPS showed us roads that no longer existed, leading us into dead ends, private property, and long detours. Over time, we rebuilt part of the road ourselves, carving out a path that made it easier to access our land.
Itâs just one more reminder that off-grid living isnât always simpleâitâs a constant journey of adapting and creating solutions.
đ
**In honor of our 5th anniversary** on **Saturday, October 18th**, weâll be hosting an **Open Mic Night** at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center! You can:

Desert Flood Chaos! Music in the Desert Canceled đ§đŸ Off-Grid Life at Ka-Hoon Campground
When the Desert Floods: Life Off-Grid at Ka-Hoon Campground
Yesterday was a true reminder of desert life at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center. We spent most of the day in town running errands and attending appointments, racing the clock to get back in time for our **Music in the Desert livestream with Advocatus Diaboli**.
While it was only sprinkling in town, back home it was pouring. According to the **University of New Mexico Weather Tower located on our land**, we received 1.03 inches of rainâenough to flood and wash out the roads. Out here, anything over â
of an inch makes the dirt roads a challenge, and over an inch changes everything. We had to drive slowly, create new routes around deep washouts, and carefully navigate back to camp.
When we finally arrived home, we discovered our dog yard was completely flooded. Groceries, water, and supplies had to be carried through knee-deep water. The dogs had their own reactionsâDreugan and Lurch thought it was fun, Vibria dashed across as fast as she could, while Persephone decided sheâd rather stand on a cement block than get wet until we coaxed her through.
We had hoped the clouds would move on so that we could still do the livestream. But once we saw just how flooded and messy everything was, we didnât want to open up the music studio and risk damage. So, we had to cancel the show.
By this morning, most of the water inside the fence had drained, leaving only mud. Out here, **living off-grid in the New Mexico desert means adapting to natureâs extremes**âwhether itâs wind, heat, or sudden floods.
Stay tuned for more updates, stories, and our livestreams as we continue to share this adventure with you.

Our Last Visit Before Moving Off-Grid | Starting Life on 5 Acres in New Mexico!
From Dreams to Reality: Our Last Visit to the Land Before Moving to New Mexico
Back in January 2020, we purchased our 5 acres of land here in New Mexico. At that time, we knew the journey wasnât overâwe still had to return to Minnesota, finish working at the center for the summer, pack up our lives, and prepare for the big move.
This video from our vault captures our very last visit to the property before heading back north. Looking back now, itâs fascinating to see the land before anything was set up, before the campground and event center, before the community that has grown around Ka-Hoon.
In the video, we mention the mountains in the areaâbut since then, weâve learned we were mistaken about which ones we were looking at. Itâs a reminder that this whole adventure has been a learning experience, step by step.
Throughout October, weâre sharing more of these âvaultâ videos, each one a snapshot of our journey. Some are from before we made the move, and some from after. Itâs our way of showing the progress, the challenges, and the growth that brought us to where we are today.
Whether youâve been following our journey from the beginning or just discovered us now, we invite you to join us each day as we share more from our archive. And if youâd like to see where we are today, make sure to follow our TikTok livestreams, YouTube channel, and check out our website for camping and event info.

She Vanished Under the Blood Moon⊠But What Returned Was Not the Same | Watch Her Haunting Return
The Rise of Shamshini: The Dragon Spirit Voice of the Desert
In the quiet heart of the New Mexico desert, where the wind carries secrets and the stars shine brighter than anywhere else, a legend is being sung into life.
Her name is **Shamshini** â a voice born from sorrow, strength, and transformation.
Once a mortal girl with a hauntingly beautiful voice, she healed others with her songs even as she carried deep pain inside. Those who knew her remember her singing beneath the vast desert sky, her voice echoing through the canyons. Then, under the glow of a blood moon, she vanished â not lost, but transformed.
Awakening an ancient power within her â a dragon spirit that had always burned quietly beneath the surface â she crossed into a realm between worlds and returned renewed, a guardian for the lost and a light in the darkness.
She never returned alone.
A cloaked figure appears whenever she sings â a mysterious presence wrapped in music and shadows. Their connection runs deep, woven into every duet and echoed in every note. The truth of their bond is never spoken aloud, but those who truly listen find the story hidden in their harmonies. Each song is a chapter â revealing secrets, healing wounds, and weaving a tale of family, loss, and redemption.
At **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**, where magic meets music, Shamshini and this enigmatic figure create an experience unlike any other â a journey through sound, story, and spirit.
Their show invites you not just to listen, but to uncover the legend as it unfolds.

Animatronic Frontman Rocks the Desert â You Wonât Believe Who Advocatus Diaboli Really Is
Desert Nights, Strange Lights â Advocatus Diaboli & the Grim Leafer Band
Out in the vast silence of the desert, when the wind settles and the stars burn just a little too bright, something stirs â and itâs not what youâd expect.
**Advocatus Diaboli**, a name whispered by moonlight and distortion pedals, steps into the glow of desert firelight, fronting a band unlike any other â **The Grim Leafer Band**. This isnât your average show. Itâs a variety act fused with parodies, originals, and just enough eerie charm to make you question what’s real.
With glitchy grins and animatronic timing, each performance is unpredictable, unforgettable â and completely self-contained. There’s a haunting precision to the chaos, a rhythm that pulses like the desert’s own heartbeat.
What started as an experiment has become a spectacle: part comedy, part musical sĂ©ance, all energy. Whether you catch them under the stars or beneath stage lights, Advocatus Diaboli isnât just a performer â heâs a desert-born ringleader guiding you through something far weirder than your average gig.
This is the show your algorithm didnât warn you about.
You canât look away â and after one set, you wonât want to.

Youâve NEVER Seen a Band Like This â Animatronics, Dark Humor & Rock Collide!
Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band: A Story Beyond the Spotlight
Iâm Melodieânot a vocalist, not a musician. My roots are in art, mental health, and organizing events at drop-in centers. But sometimes life opens a door you never expected.
When I first met Brent, known on stage as Advocatus Diaboli, I saw a man who lived for music. It wasn’t just something he didâit was who he was. But life had dealt him a heavy hand. He had once toured internationally with a band, only to walk away from it all to care for his two young children and his terminally ill wife.
And then, something I never imagined happenedâshe chose me. Brentâs wife, before she passed, asked me to be part of his and the kidsâ life. She saw something in me, a connection, a trust. After she passed, Brent raised the kids on his own for several years. When our paths crossed again, I came back into his lifeâand Iâve been here ever since.
I didnât fall in love with the stageâI fell in love with the heart behind it. Brent had put his passion on pause for years, but I was determined to help him return to it. Only this time, he wasnât going back the way he came.
Brent has always been an out-of-the-box thinker. He created Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band, a completely unique theatrical experience that blends music, storytelling, dark humor, and animatronics. Think Weird Al meets Broadway, with a side of Halloween and a wink at the unexpected.
We have a fully animated band: Spliff on guitar, Roach on drums, and Blunt on keys. Brent and Shamshini front the show with live vocals and twisted charm. And me? Iâm not on stage singingâIâm running the animatronics from behind the scenes, bringing the characters to life, helping create the illusion.
The audience picks a name for me each nightâMelodious, Melious, and more. Itâs become part of the showâs lore, and even though Iâm shy by nature, Iâve learned to love that wild unpredictability.
Our biggest challenge? Convincing venues to take a chance on a show that defies all labels. Itâs not just a concert. Itâs not just theater. Itâs something entirely its ownâand that makes people hesitate.
But those who have seen us? They donât forget it. Weâre forging our own roadâone performance, one believer, one unforgettable night at a time.

We Live in the DesertâBut Nights Like This Make It All Worth It đâšđŸ
đ Life in the Desert: Night Skies, Cool Air, and Canine Joy
One of the things I absolutely love about living in the desert is the breathtaking view of the night sky. Out here, far from city lights and surrounded by open space, the stars put on a show every night. With little to no light pollution, itâs easy to get lost staring into the cosmos â planets, constellations, and sometimes even meteor showers.
Daytime in the desert is a whole different story. With temperatures climbing well over 100 degrees, we tend to go dormant during the heat of the day, focusing on ways to stay cool and conserve energy. Even the dogs know to take it easy. The sand gets scorching hot, so they usually lounge in the shade or stay indoors until things cool off.
But when the sun goes down? Thatâs when the magic happens.
As the desert starts to cool, we all come back to life. The dogs race around the yard, tails wagging, chasing shadows and each other. We sit outside, soaking in the cooler air, watching the sky transition from golden sunsets to deep star-filled black. Itâs peaceful, grounding, and absolutely beautiful.
**Last nightâs view was especially breathtaking.** The mostly full moon lit up the desert, casting soft shadows and adding a silvery glow to everything. It made sitting outside completely worth it â the kind of night that reminds you why you live out here. The stars still sparkled, but that moon stole the show.
Sometimes we go live on TikTok to share this little slice of desert life â the calm, the stars, the moon, and the dogs doing what dogs do best: playing under the night sky.

This Band Has Animatronic Members?! Youâve Never Seen a Show Like Advocatus Diaboli Before!
đ„ Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band: A Show Unlike Any Other
Out in the New Mexico desert, where the sky stretches forever and the silence can be haunting⊠something strange is happening onstage. A band like no other is rising from the dust, built on dark humor, raw creativity, and a lineup that blends **live performance, animatronics, and theatrical storytelling**.
This is **Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band** â and they’re not here to play it safe.
—
### đ What *Is* the Grim Leafer Band?
At its core, this is a **theatrical variety show** disguised as a band. Youâll get **parodies**, **originals**, and a few twisted covers â but this isnât just music. Itâs a story unfolding in front of your eyes, with characters, chaos, and layers that reveal more the deeper you listen.
Think *gothic vaudeville*, *desert freak show*, and *punk rock puppetry* all rolled into one. And yes â they have **animatronics**.
—
### đ€ Meet the Cast
**Advocatus Diaboli** â The lead vocalist, creator, and storyteller. With decades of songwriting behind him and a powerful voice that mixes mischief with meaning, he pulls the strings â literally and figuratively â behind the scenes.
**Shamshini** â Soft-spoken offstage but vocally captivating on it. Her harmonies and stage presence add contrast to the darker tones of the act.
**Blunt** â The deceased keyboardist who didnât get the memo to stop performing. Ghostly and stiff, he adds eerie ambiance and unexpected moments of comedy.
**Roach** â A spiked-hair drummer whose energy feels barely contained. Heâs part punk, part chaos, and all rhythm.
**Spliff** â The guitarist with a twisted back and a twisted sense of humor. His posture may be off, but his playing shreds.
Together, they create an atmosphere thatâs equal parts concert and cult performance.
—
### đ” Born From the Desert â And Defying Expectations
This band wasnât built in a studio or plucked from a scene. It was imagined, constructed, and brought to life in the desert. Created by **Advocatus Diaboli** after a lifetime of music, stage production, and storytelling, the band was born out of necessity â and passion.
No one was going to drive out to the middle of nowhere for rehearsals. So⊠the band was built instead.
—
You never know what youâll catch â a new character, a glitched-out performance, or a parody that hits too close to home.
—
