I’ve been down with some stomach issues the last couple of days. It’s slowly getting better, but I haven’t felt up to doing much.
This weekend, we’re gearing up for the Music in the Desert Talent Show and Karaoke, which should be a great time for everyone.
Before this, we were busy working in the studio, rewriting and organizing songs for the Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band show. We’ve made some good progress, but there’s still more to do. The work we’re putting in will make it much easier to set up and run the music during the performance.
We also had a nice week of campers coming in and even sold some registrations for the Halloween Hootenanny! It’s going to be 4 days of fun and activities in the New Mexico desert, with music, Creepy Crawl campsite-to-campsite trick-or-treating, and more.

Day 3 in the Studio: Progress on Advocatus Diaboli & The Grim Leafer Band Show Notes
After a long day in the studio working on music and show notes for the Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band show, we’re finally making progress. It’s day 3, and even though it’s been the longest day so far, we’re about halfway through. Luckily, we’ve found some faster methods to streamline things. The heat wasn’t extreme today, but it was enough to make my phone overheat multiple times. Now, after all the hard work, we’re winding down, watching some football with a few neighbors and taking it easy.

Meet Vibria: Our Scottish Dragon at Ka-Hoon Campground
**A New Addition to Our Family: Meet Vibria**
Yesterday, something special happened. While scrolling through Facebook, I was reminded of when we brought home Litha nine years ago. Sadly, Litha passed away from cancer a few years back. While reflecting on that memory, I received a notification about a new post in a New Mexico pet group. I usually don’t get these alerts, so it immediately caught my attention. The post featured three puppies that were found on Cahoon Street in Roswell.
For those who don’t know, Brent’s original Scottish surname is Colquhoun, which is why we named our campground Plateau Hame de Colquhoun, also known as Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center. It felt like more than coincidence—the name Cahoon being another variation of Colquhoun seemed like a sign.
We believe things happen for a reason, so we made the six-hour round trip to pick up one of the puppies. We named her Vibria, which is Scottish for “female dragon.” She’s already stolen our hearts.
What do you think of our new furry addition?

Embracing Open-Minded Living: Our Journey Through Judgment and Finding True Community
In the journey of life, being true to who you are often means standing apart from the crowd. For us, that has come with both challenges and revelations. Our open-mindedness, our willingness to embrace what others might find unconventional, has been met with judgment, false accusations, and sadly, the loss of friendships we once cherished.
We’ve faced harsh words and baseless claims, accusations of things we never did. The pain of being taken to court over our way of life—only for the case to be dropped when the truth came to light—was profound. Yet, the scars from that experience run deep, not just because of the legal battle, but because of the damage done to our reputation and the relationships that crumbled under the weight of lies.
It was heart-wrenching to see people who once stood beside us, selling their goods at our events and sharing our space, turn away. These were people we thought supported us, who we considered friends. But when faced with rumors and accusations, they chose to believe the worst rather than stand by us. It’s a harsh reminder of how quickly things can change when people judge what they don’t understand.
Yet, amid the pain, we’ve also found something beautiful. Through this ordeal, we discovered friends who became more like family. These are the people who saw the truth, who stood by us when others turned their backs. Their support has been a beacon of hope in a time that felt overwhelmingly dark.
Just a few months ago, we encountered someone who, despite their friendly demeanor, was clearly fishing for dirt. Their comments and questions—like suggesting we sell alcohol or 420 during events—were meant to trap us. But instead of reacting with anger or suspicion, we welcomed them. We invited them to sit with us and a visiting neighbor, treating them with kindness and openness, even though we knew their intentions were far from pure. We’ve never done anything close to what they implied, and the most we’ve ever done was offer someone a ride to town so they could make their own purchases.
We are who we are—open-minded, a bit outside the norm, and unafraid to embrace what we love, even if it might seem unconventional to others. In college, I was often criticized for thinking outside the box, for refusing to conform to what others expected. But I’ve found that being true to myself is more important than fitting into someone else’s idea of what is normal.
You don’t have to fit inside the box society has made for you. You need to do what is best for you, even if it means facing judgment or criticism. The key is to be as truthful as possible. We all have secrets, and we all have skeletons in our closets. What matters is how you handle them. For us, it meant facing unfounded accusations and the judgment of others, but ultimately standing tall in our truth.
Respecting others and letting them be who they are is crucial. But it’s equally important to protect yourself. You can be respectful and kind while still keeping those who might harm you at a distance.
Our story is one of resilience, of holding onto our truth in the face of adversity, and of finding strength in the support of those who truly care. We’ve learned that while some may judge us for being different, there are others who will see us for who we truly are and stand by our side.

Creepy Crawl Trick-or-Treating at Ka-Hoon Campground’s Halloween Hootenanny: Fun for All Ages!
**Creepy Crawl Trick-or-Treating Ideas for the Halloween Hootenanny**
The Halloween Hootenanny is just around the corner, and with it comes our favorite spooky event—the Creepy Crawl trick-or-treating! This unique experience lets campers go from site to site collecting treats, and it’s a fun way to get everyone involved in the Halloween spirit.
Here are a few treat ideas to make your campsite stand out during the Creepy Crawl:
– **Cupcakes:** Easy to make and decorate with spooky themes like ghosts, spiders, or pumpkins. Cupcakes are a great option for both kids and adults.
– **Classic Candy:** You can’t go wrong with the tried-and-true. Stock up on your favorite candies for a guaranteed hit.
– **Glow Sticks:** A fun and safe treat, especially for kids. They can double as safety accessories when it gets dark.
– **Mixed Drinks & Punches:** For the adults, why not prepare some festive Halloween-themed beverages? Just be sure to check armbands to verify age before serving.
– **Gummies:** From classic gummy bears to Halloween-themed shapes, these treats are always a crowd-pleaser.
**Important Reminder:** The Creepy Crawl is for all ages! While “adult” treats like alcoholic beverages or 420 goodies are welcome, it’s crucial to ensure you’re giving them only to those who are of legal age. Always check armbands to avoid any mix-ups. Also, please be mindful of those who do not consume alcohol or 420. Respect everyone’s choice, and remember that “no” means “no.”
**New Service Considerations:**
We’re also exploring the idea of offering a shuttle service for campers, either to pick up Walmart orders or to drive individuals into town. This would make it more convenient for those who need to run errands or grab supplies. However, we haven’t made a final decision on whether this service will be feasible or necessary. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this! Would you find a shuttle service helpful during your stay at Ka-Hoon Campground? Let us know!
Get ready for a night of spooky fun, delicious treats, and memorable moments at the Halloween Hootenanny!

Busy Labor Day weekend at Ka-Hoon Campground with community BBQ, camping, and lending a helping hand.
Hope everyone is having a great Labor Day weekend! We don’t have too much planned, but we’re excited to have a bunch of folks from the community over for a BBQ today.
There isn’t much news to report, but we’re definitely enjoying the cooler days. Brent has been busy helping out around the community, which he loves doing. He recently helped a neighbor install a new breaker box and wire in some GFI plugs to support their dialysis machine. He also spent most of the day driving another neighbor, who doesn’t have a vehicle right now, to town for errands and groceries.
We’ve had a nice weekend with campers enjoying the cooler weather. Yesterday, we took some time to fix the solar lights that the cattle love to knock down.
Last night was Anne’s first real shift at Love’s, and she seemed to enjoy it. It was a bit tough on us, as we worried about her working the late shift. Thankfully, a few folks from our community stopped by the store to check on her and then reported back to us, which really helped ease our minds.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, everyone!

Prepare for the Ultimate Halloween Hootenanny at Ka-Hoon Campground!
**Get Ready for the Halloween Hootenanny at Ka-Hoon Campground!**
The Halloween Hootenanny is just around the corner, and it’s time to start planning how you’ll make your campsite stand out during this spooktacular event! Here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing:
### 1. **Spooky Campsite Decorations**
If you’re looking to give your campsite a hauntingly festive makeover, consider adding some of these elements:
– **Pumpkin Lanterns**: Carve out pumpkins and place LED lights inside to create a spooky glow around your site.
– **Cobwebs and Spiders**: String up faux cobwebs and scatter plastic spiders around your tent or RV to add a creepy touch.
– **Ghostly Figures**: Create ghost decorations using white sheets or fabric and hang them from trees or poles for a floating effect.
– **Graveyard Scene**: Make your own DIY tombstones out of cardboard or foam and set up a mini graveyard at your site.
### 2. **Simple Lighting for a Welcoming Glow**
If you prefer not to go all out with decorations but still want to participate in the fun, just adding some lighting can make a big difference:
– **String Lights**: Hang up orange or purple string lights around your campsite to add a festive atmosphere.
– **Lanterns**: Use lanterns to light up your space, creating a warm and inviting glow for trick-or-treaters.
– **Glow Sticks**: Place glow sticks in jars or hang them around your campsite for an easy, low-maintenance way to add some Halloween spirit.
### 3. **Creepy Crawl: A Trick-or-Treat Adventure**
Remember, our Creepy Crawl trick-or-treating event is for both adults and children, so feel free to get creative with your treats! If you plan to hand out “adult” treats (like spiked cider or special candies), please check arm bands to ensure no one underage receives them.
### **Important Schedule Update**
We’ve moved the **Costume Contest** to the same night as the Creepy Crawl! This way, everyone can enjoy a full evening of costumes, treats, and Halloween fun. So start planning your costumes now—whether you’re going for spooky, funny, or creative, we can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Embracing a Rainy Day in the Desert: Cozy Camp Vibes and Unexpected Showers at Ka-Hoon Campground
**A Cool Change at Ka-Hoon Campground**
The weather finally cooled off, at least for a day or two. Yesterday brought some much-needed cloud cover. Though we didn’t get a lot of rain here, we did experience some light showers off and on throughout the day, while the valleys seemed to get hit pretty good.
With the cloudy skies, we had to conserve solar power. This meant skipping our usual rehearsal and brewing our coffee in the percolator instead of the auto drip machine—which is fine by us since we love the taste of percolator coffee more! Even with limited power, we managed to watch a movie, run fans, listen to the radio, and charge our phones.
Anne’s solar setup went down this morning, which was the first time in a year. Thankfully, the sun is out now, and it won’t be long before her batteries are charged again.
Our solar setup is relatively large compared to some of our neighbors. A few don’t have solar at all and rely entirely on generators. When we first moved out here, all we had were generators too. We would run them once or twice a day for a few hours to charge our phones and watch some TV. Our first solar panel was a small setup that we now use in the Hut to power a light. It’s small but reliable, with two USB ports and the capacity to run two 2-watt lights most of the night.
Life off-grid requires adjustments and adaptability, but there’s a unique satisfaction in being self-sufficient and making do with what we have.
