Living off-grid isn’t easy — especially when essential equipment like your truck breaks down. For us, hauling water is critical, and when the truck is out of commission, it means no water at home. Recently, that meant relying on Planet Fitness in Los Lunas for showers. At first, showering at the gym seemed like a convenient solution. But there’s a catch: to get a hot shower, the water system requires another shower to be running or at least someone to wash their hands in the bathroom. These systems often share the same hot water source, so one running helps maintain the temperature.
However, this creates an awkward dilemma. It’s common to see extra showers running even if only one person is actually showering. Personally, I’m uncomfortable turning on another shower while I’m using mine — I worry someone might want to use it and assume it’s occupied. Here’s the thing — when the bathroom is busy, you expect people to wash their hands after using the toilet. I always do. But one Thursday, while I was the only person showering, I kept hearing toilets flushing but no handwashing. It wasn’t until I was nearly done with my chilly shower that someone finally washed their hands, and only then did I get some hot water.
This experience was surprising — and honestly, a bit unsettling — because it made me realize just how many people skip washing their hands even in public spaces where hygiene is critical. Living off-grid means adapting to challenges, big and small. From truck repairs impacting water hauling to navigating the quirks of public showers, it’s all part of the journey. If you’re considering off-grid life or are already living it, these moments remind us that patience, creativity, and a bit of humor go a long way.

1984 F250 Pickup Troubles: How Our Desert Neighbors Saved the Day!
**The Unexpected Support of Desert Neighbors: Our 1984 F250 Pickup Adventure**
A few weeks ago, our 1984 F250 diesel pickup broke down in the post office parking lot. Thanks to a generous neighbor, we were towed home and began an intense search for the issue. Despite replacing the starter solenoid, neutral safety switch, and repairing gears on the ignition, the truck still refused to start.
Our neighbor’s research led to the discovery of an elusive “ignition brain” specific to the 1984 model. Although he’d only heard about it once before, replacing this component finally got the truck running. We’re incredibly grateful for the support of our desert neighbors.
Living in a larger town, we often felt judged and isolated despite being close to others. In our small desert community, we’ve found a sense of acceptance and belonging that we hadn’t experienced before. While there have been a few negative encounters, they don’t overshadow the genuine connections we’ve made. Our desert home has proven to be a place of true community and support.

Surviving Summer Heat, Truck Woes, and Exciting Desert Events! 🌟 | RV Life & Music Fun
**Surviving the Summer Heat and Truck Troubles**
This summer has brought its share of heat, impacting our mood and daily routine. Fortunately, the nights cool off enough for our dogs to play outside, though during the day they only venture out briefly to potty before rushing back in. Inside the RV, we stay about 20 degrees cooler, providing some relief. We ensure the dogs stay hydrated with ice-cold water and a refreshing spritz of cool water.
On a different note, our pickup truck broke down last week and had to be towed home. Initially, we suspected a battery connection or short issue, but with new batteries and no shorts found, we moved on to checking the starter solenoid. Despite replacing it, the truck still wouldn’t start. We’ve now been advised that the neutral safety switch might be the culprit. The part is on order, and we’re hopeful that this will solve the problem, as the starter itself seems to be in good condition.
Don’t forget our exciting event on August 17th: the Music in the Desert Talent Show! Enjoy karaoke, a cosplay contest, and a night of anime under the stars. For more details, visit our website at [www.plateauhamedecolquhoun.com](http://www.plateauhamedecolquhoun.com).

Truck Repair Chronicles: Overcoming Adversity with Perseverance and Community Support
After replacing the faulty rear transmission seal and encountering a fuel leak during a test drive, frustration and discouragement settled in. However, perseverance prevailed as we identified a busted fuel line and promptly fixed it. With the truck back on the road, several test runs have been conducted, with the furthest reaching about 20 miles through the local terrain.
Gratitude is owed to the supportive community on Clapper Live and our helpful neighbor, whose encouragement bolstered our resolve to tackle the repairs.
Now that the pickup is operational again, we can finally address the projects that were put on hold during its downtime.

1984 F250 Truck Repair: Neighborly Help Saves the Day! | Mechanical Troubles & DIY Fixes
In a recent turn of events, our trusty 1984 F250 diesel truck encountered a setback when the rear transmission seal gave out. Despite receiving assurances from family and friends that the repair was straightforward, our lack of experience left us hesitant to attempt the fix ourselves. Fortunately, a neighbor with extensive mechanical expertise stepped in to lend a hand. After successfully replacing the seal and conducting a test drive that initially showed no signs of leakage, we decided to take the truck out for errands. However, a mere mile into our journey, we realized we had forgotten something and turned back. It was a stroke of luck, as upon our return, we discovered the truck was leaking diesel fuel profusely. Today, our neighbor is returning to assist us in diagnosing and repairing the leak. Despite this hiccup, our affection for the truck remains unwavering. Its reliability and willingness to tackle any task make it an invaluable asset, even if our mechanical knowledge is limited. #TruckRepair #MechanicalTroubles #DIYMechanic #TruckMaintenance #OldTrucks #DieselTrucks #NeighborlyHelp #VehicleMaintenance #MechanicalExpertise #trustytruck
