The New Mexico desert is a place of stunning beauty and tranquility, offering a unique and inspiring lifestyle for those who choose to live off-grid. At Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center, we embrace the challenges and rewards of desert living, creating a community where nature, adventure, and human connection thrive.
#### Embracing the Beauty of the Desert
Every day in the desert brings a new adventure and a deeper connection with nature. The vast landscapes, unique rock formations, and vibrant flora and fauna provide a backdrop for endless exploration. Whether it’s hiking through rugged trails, marveling at the stunning sunsets, or simply enjoying the serene silence, the desert offers a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
#### Building a Resilient Community
Living off-grid in the desert teaches us resilience and adaptability. At Ka-Hoon Campground, we rely on solar power, conserve water, and utilize sustainable practices to thrive in this environment. Our community comes together to share resources, support each other, and celebrate our unique lifestyle. We host events like the “Music in the Desert Saturdays” and “Drum Circle on the Longest Day of the Year” to foster connections and create lasting memories.
#### Overcoming Challenges
Desert living is not without its challenges. The extreme temperatures, scarce water sources, and isolation require careful planning and resourcefulness. We schedule outdoor work for early mornings and late evenings to avoid the midday heat, and we find ways to stay cool indoors during the hottest part of the day. Our dogs also enjoy the cool interior of our homes, staying hydrated and comfortable with misting systems on particularly hot days.
#### Celebrating Together
One of the highlights of our community is gathering around the Colquhoun Hearth, our communal firepit. Located within the Colquhoun Circle, this space is open to all campers, weather permitting. It’s a place to socialize, play music, tell stories, and enjoy the mesmerizing New Mexico skies. From bonfires and talent shows to drum circles and camping nights, our events bring people together to share in the magic of the desert.

Living Off-Grid in the Desert: Embracing Challenges and Rewards
### Living Off-Grid in the Desert: Embracing the Challenges and Rewards
Living off-grid in the desert has its unique set of rewards and challenges. As someone who has spent most of my life in rural settings, transitioning to an off-grid lifestyle was a natural progression. However, my previous experience managing centers for people with mental illnesses provided valuable lessons that apply to our current endeavors.
#### The Joy of Desert Living
The tranquility and beauty of the desert offer an unparalleled sense of peace. The vast landscapes, stunning sunsets, and the simplicity of off-grid living create an environment where one can truly connect with nature. Our off-grid setup has allowed us to create a sustainable lifestyle, relying on solar power.
#### From Managing Centers to Off-Grid Living
In my previous role, I ran centers that provided a safe space for individuals with mental illnesses to meet others, engage in activities, and find support. I was responsible for planning, funding, and organizing events—skills that have proven invaluable in our current off-grid community. The essence of creating a supportive environment remains the same, but now, we also navigate the complexities of living off the land and managing resources sustainably.
#### Facing Unexpected Challenges
One surprising challenge has been dealing with other venues viewing us as competition. Recently, a local venue contacted us quite rudely, outright declaring us as rivals. They even attempted to involve the county to create issues for us, which ultimately backfired and resulted in the county worker getting into trouble. It’s baffling to experience such hostility when our primary goal is to foster community and provide a welcoming space for all.
#### Building a Supportive Community
Despite these challenges, we remain committed to our vision. We aim to build a community where everyone feels welcome and safe, without the fear of judgment or competition. Our focus is on collaboration and mutual support, rather than rivalry. The off-grid lifestyle teaches resilience and adaptability, and we are determined to continue creating a positive impact in our community.
#### Conclusion
Living off-grid in the desert is a rewarding experience that comes with its own set of challenges. Drawing on past experiences and maintaining a focus on community and sustainability helps us navigate these obstacles. We remain dedicated to fostering a supportive environment where everyone can thrive, free from unnecessary competition and hostility.

“How We Attracted Birds to Our Desert Campground: Simple and Effective Tips”
### Attracting Birds to Ka-Hoon Campground: Our Journey
When we first moved out to the desert to establish Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center, the bird population was sparse. The area was predominantly populated by ravens and hawks, with few small birds in sight. Over time, however, we have noticed a delightful increase in the variety of birds visiting our site. Here’s how we achieved this transformation.
#### Creating Bird-Friendly Spaces
Our approach to attracting birds was simple and organic. We focused on providing natural perches and safe landing spots. Containers, poles, and even water sources for our cats and dogs doubled as hydration points for birds. These small efforts created a welcoming environment for our feathered friends.
#### Water: The Essential Element
Water is a crucial resource in the desert. By ensuring there are accessible water sources, such as shallow dishes and pet water bowls, we provided birds with a necessary hydration spot. This simple addition quickly became popular among local bird species.
#### Native Plants: A Natural Attraction
One of our most successful strategies was transplanting and caring for native plants known to attract birds and butterflies. These plants not only offer food and shelter but also create a habitat that feels familiar and safe for the birds. By nurturing these plants to full bloom, we have created a vibrant ecosystem that supports local wildlife.
#### Observing Positive Changes
As we continued to maintain and improve our bird-friendly initiatives, we observed a steady increase in the variety and number of small birds. The once sparse bird population now includes a diverse array of species, contributing to the natural beauty and biodiversity of Ka-Hoon Campground.
#### Our Commitment to Wildlife
Our efforts to attract birds are part of our broader commitment to preserving and enhancing the natural environment at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center. By integrating sustainable practices and respecting the local ecosystem, we aim to create a harmonious and thriving habitat for all wildlife.
#### Conclusion
Attracting birds to Ka-Hoon Campground has been a rewarding journey. Simple steps like providing water, creating landing spots, and planting native flora have made a significant impact. We look forward to continuing our efforts to support and enjoy the diverse birdlife in our desert home.

Surviving Desert Windstorms: Off-Grid Living Adventures
### Living Off-Grid in the Desert: Battling the Elements
Living off-grid in the desert offers a unique and rewarding lifestyle, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. While we don’t experience much rain or snow, we do face formidable windstorms, especially in the spring. These windstorms can wreak havoc on anything that’s not solid or tied down, creating sandstorms that infiltrate every nook and cranny.
#### The Desert Winds: A Force to Be Reckoned With
Windstorms in the desert are not to be underestimated. The strong gusts can tear apart poorly secured structures and scatter loose items far and wide. The sand carried by these winds finds its way into every crack and crevice, leaving a fine layer of dust on everything. It’s a gritty reminder of the power of nature.
#### The Unseen Enemy: Sandstorms
Sandstorms are a frequent companion to windstorms in the desert. The fine sand seems to have a life of its own, sneaking into homes, getting into your ears, eyes, and even your mouth. It’s a challenge to keep the sand out.
#### Preparing for Windstorms
Preparation is key to surviving and thriving in these conditions. Here are some essential tips for dealing with desert windstorms:
1. **Secure Your Structures:** Ensure that all buildings, tents, and other structures are solidly built and securely tied down. Use heavy-duty stakes and ropes for additional support.
2. **Protect Your Assets:** Store loose items indoors or in secured storage to prevent them from being damaged or blown away. Tie down smaller buildings. We tie down the Hut and Dusty Nail General Store using 3,000 lb ratchet straps and either 6 ft T-posts driven halfway into the ground or 3-foot L rebar stakes. Then wet the ground around to harden the caliche.
3. **Be Prepared:** Watch the weather forecast, and don’t leave windows open. We put towels over the bottom rail of the RV windows, close blinds, turn on fans for ventilation, wear masks while outside, and stay in as much as possible.
#### Embracing the Desert Life
Despite these challenges, living off-grid in the desert has its perks. The vast, open landscapes, stunning sunsets, and the serenity of the remote environment make it a unique and fulfilling experience. Embracing the elements, including the windstorms, is part of the adventure.
#### The Resilience of Off-Grid Living
Living off-grid in the desert teaches resilience and adaptability. Each windstorm is a test of our preparedness and ingenuity. Over time, you learn to respect the power of nature and find ways to coexist with it.
#### Conclusion
Living in the desert means adapting to its unique challenges, from windstorms to sand infiltration. With the right preparation and a resilient mindset, these obstacles can be managed, allowing you to fully enjoy the beauty and tranquility of off-grid living in the desert.

Discover Off-Grid Living at Ka-Hoon Campground: A Desert Oasis in New Mexico
Discover Off-Grid Living at Ka-Hoon Campground: A Desert Oasis in New Mexico
At Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center, we embody the essence of a desert oasis where camping, events, and off-grid living converge. Our recent efforts to enhance our solar lighting system exemplify our commitment to sustainability and self-sufficiency.
Under the starlit skies of the New Mexico desert, we embarked on a mission to replace broken and non-functional solar lights across our property. By waiting until nightfall, we could easily identify which lights needed attention. As part of our eco-friendly approach, any working but broken lights were repurposed for future projects.
With a total of 20 new lights at our disposal, we weren’t sure how many replacements we would require. Ultimately, we used all but 6 of these lights, ensuring that each one found a meaningful purpose within our campground and event center.
After completing this task, we took a moment to unwind and appreciate the breathtaking desert skies, rejuvenating ourselves for the busy days ahead. We have exciting events lined up, including the Thursday night live rehearsal and the upcoming Nomad Gathering in the Desert.
Join us on our journey of off-grid living and desert adventures at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center. Learn more about our offerings and upcoming events at http://www.plateauhamedecolquhoun.com.

Living Off-Grid in the New Mexico Desert: Dealing with Winds and Sand Storms
Living Off-Grid in the New Mexico Desert: Dealing with Winds and Sand Storms
Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert offers a unique and rewarding experience for those who seek a simpler, more sustainable lifestyle. The serene landscapes and wide-open spaces provide a sense of freedom and a connection to nature that is hard to find elsewhere. However, the desert environment also presents its share of challenges, particularly when it comes to dealing with winds and sandstorms.
## The Realities of Desert Living
The New Mexico desert is known for its arid climate, sparse vegetation, and dramatic landscapes. While this environment can be stunningly beautiful, it also comes with harsh conditions that off-grid residents must learn to navigate. One of the most challenging aspects of desert living is coping with the frequent winds and sandstorms.
Winds in the desert can be strong and relentless, causing sand and dust to be blown across the landscape. This can create a hazy atmosphere, reduce visibility, and make it difficult to go about daily activities. Sandstorms can also pose health risks, particularly for those with respiratory issues.
## Strategies for Dealing with Winds and Sandstorms
Despite the challenges, there are several strategies that off-grid residents can employ to manage the effects of winds and sandstorms:
1. **Shelter Design**: Building a sturdy, wind-resistant shelter is essential. Consider structures with aerodynamic shapes and strong foundations to withstand high winds. Windows and doors should be securely sealed to prevent dust and sand from entering.
2. **Protective Barriers**: Planting vegetation or erecting fences around your property can help reduce the impact of winds and sandstorms. These barriers can act as windbreaks and help stabilize the soil.
3. **Outdoor Maintenance**: Regularly maintain your outdoor spaces by securing loose items and debris that could be blown around during a storm. This includes tying down furniture, securing tarps, and storing tools and equipment properly.
4. **Air Filtration**: Invest in good-quality air filters for your living space to help trap dust and sand particles. This can improve indoor air quality and protect your respiratory health.
5. **Weather Monitoring**: Stay informed about local weather forecasts to anticipate and prepare for upcoming winds and sandstorms. This can help you take preventive measures and adjust your plans accordingly.
## Embracing the Desert Lifestyle
Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert may not be for everyone, but for those who embrace the challenges, it offers a chance to live in harmony with nature. The desert environment fosters resilience and adaptability, teaching valuable life lessons that can be applied beyond the boundaries of the desert.
As you navigate the winds and sandstorms, remember that each challenge is an opportunity for growth. By taking proactive measures and staying connected to the natural world, you can thrive in this unique and inspiring environment.
