Thought I’d share a quick video of the cattle paying us a visit this morning and having to chase them away from the RVs. Watch how “difficult” it is to drive them off (said sarcastically)!

Off-Grid Morning: Solar Power Challenges and Life with Vibria the Pup at KaHoon Campground
This morning, we woke up to find the solar power out, which was strange since we had a full day of sun yesterday. As I lay in bed, my mind raced with possible reasons. My first thought was that maybe we’d forgotten to turn off the PA after rehearsal with the animatronics. That thing pulls about 3,000 watts, and we’ve accidentally left it on a few times before. But I distinctly remembered us shutting it down, so that couldn’t be it. The next thought, which I dreaded, was that something might be wrong with the solar system itself.
Eventually, I gave in and got up, mostly because the dogs decided it was time. Vibria was already calling from her box, ready to start the day. After letting the dogs out, I usually throw in a bit of fetch, fill up their water, and inevitably annoy them by going inside to make coffee. But not today. Today, I was on a mission to figure out what happened with the solar.
It didn’t take long to crack the case. Somehow, the fridge had switched to using both electric and gas. That means it draws power from the batteries first before automatically switching to gas when the power runs out. To make things worse, the RV charging system had switched to boost mode, which draws extra power to charge the RV batteries faster. Running both the fridge and boost mode overnight drained the system. It’s fine during the day when the solar’s up and running, but overnight? Not so much.
With a sigh of relief, I realized nothing was broken. Now, we’re just waiting for the sun to come up and recharge the solar. It’s a bit cloudy this morning, so it may take longer than usual, but it only takes about an hour or two of full sun to get the batteries back to normal.
Meanwhile, the dogs got their morning playtime, barked at a camper stopping by to say hello, and are now back to napping. Vibria’s curled up at my feet, and we’re just waiting on that coffee to percolate.

Cattle Chaos: Off-Grid Adventures with Solar Panels and Free-Range Herds
**Cattle, Cattle, Everywhere…**
Why do the cattle always feel the need to hang around the solar panels? Seriously, they have acres upon acres of land to graze on, but no… they have to gather right where they can cause the most trouble! Growing up on a dairy farm, I remember the cows roaming the yard freely, grazing peacefully among the flowers and plants. At least, that’s how I remember it—though my parents might have a different story! Maybe I was too young to notice the chaos they caused back then, but these guys? They’re determined to drive us to the loony bin.
Yet, despite the destruction, I can’t bring myself to put up a fence. The open views are just too beautiful. The cattle are welcome here—if only they’d stay away from the solar panels! It’s not even like there’s a buffet of grass around the solar setups. But still, they gather like it’s the hottest spot in town.
Even with all the havoc, watching these cattle brings me back to my childhood. Back then, it was Holsteins wandering the Minnesota fields, and now it’s these stubborn free-range fellows. Nostalgia sure has a funny way of making chaos feel a little less… chaotic.

Meet Vibria: Our Newest Adventure and Challenges with Free-Range Cattle!
Life with Vibria: Our New Puppy and Free-Range Cattle Adventures
It’s been three weeks since we brought Vibria home, and we think she’s around 11 weeks old now. While we don’t know her exact breed or how big she’ll get, we estimate she’ll grow to be around 10 to 15 lbs based on her current size. Vibria has a big personality and zero fear—she’s quite the confident little pup. Potty training her has been a bit more challenging than it was with Dreugan, but we’re adjusting. Having a small dog again has its learning curve!
Vibria is so tiny that she can easily slip through the fence in our yard, so we’ve set up her own little fenced area within the larger yard to give her a safe space to play and soak up the sun. When we’re outside supervising, she gets to run around in the bigger fenced-in areas and even outside them.
Life out here has its challenges, though—especially when it comes to the free-range cattle. They love to roam, and unfortunately, they have a habit of tearing up our solar lights and getting too close to the solar panels. To keep them away, we’ve set up motion detectors that trigger sounds and lights, but sometimes these deterrents aren’t as effective as we’d like. We could build a fence, but we love the wide-open views, so we usually just go out and herd them away ourselves when they get too close. While we enjoy watching the cattle, we could definitely do without the destruction. We tell them they’re welcome as long as they stay out of our areas—but they don’t seem to listen!

Meet Vibria: Our Scottish Dragon at Ka-Hoon Campground
**A New Addition to Our Family: Meet Vibria**
Yesterday, something special happened. While scrolling through Facebook, I was reminded of when we brought home Litha nine years ago. Sadly, Litha passed away from cancer a few years back. While reflecting on that memory, I received a notification about a new post in a New Mexico pet group. I usually don’t get these alerts, so it immediately caught my attention. The post featured three puppies that were found on Cahoon Street in Roswell.
For those who don’t know, Brent’s original Scottish surname is Colquhoun, which is why we named our campground Plateau Hame de Colquhoun, also known as Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center. It felt like more than coincidence—the name Cahoon being another variation of Colquhoun seemed like a sign.
We believe things happen for a reason, so we made the six-hour round trip to pick up one of the puppies. We named her Vibria, which is Scottish for “female dragon.” She’s already stolen our hearts.
What do you think of our new furry addition?

From Campers to Neighbors: Welcoming New Friends to Our Desert Community!
**Embracing New Beginnings in Our Desert Community**
Today marks the first day in months that we don’t have a camper staying with us, and the place feels a bit empty. However, it’s a good kind of empty, filled with the warmth of friendships made and the excitement of new beginnings.
The camper who just checked out came to us when they transferred from their old job at an Amazon distribution center in Colorado to the new Amazon distribution center in Los Lunas. During their stay, they became more than just guests—they became friends. Our little community here in the desert grew to know and appreciate them, and we’re thrilled to hear that they’ve fallen in love with the area just as much as we have.
They’re not going far, either—they’re in the process of buying some land not too far from us. So, while it might feel like a goodbye, it’s really just a “see you soon.” We’re excited to officially welcome them as permanent members of our growing community. Here in the desert, it’s never really goodbye; it’s more of a “welcome home.”

Surviving Summer Heat, Truck Woes, and Exciting Desert Events! 🌟 | RV Life & Music Fun
**Surviving the Summer Heat and Truck Troubles**
This summer has brought its share of heat, impacting our mood and daily routine. Fortunately, the nights cool off enough for our dogs to play outside, though during the day they only venture out briefly to potty before rushing back in. Inside the RV, we stay about 20 degrees cooler, providing some relief. We ensure the dogs stay hydrated with ice-cold water and a refreshing spritz of cool water.
On a different note, our pickup truck broke down last week and had to be towed home. Initially, we suspected a battery connection or short issue, but with new batteries and no shorts found, we moved on to checking the starter solenoid. Despite replacing it, the truck still wouldn’t start. We’ve now been advised that the neutral safety switch might be the culprit. The part is on order, and we’re hopeful that this will solve the problem, as the starter itself seems to be in good condition.
Don’t forget our exciting event on August 17th: the Music in the Desert Talent Show! Enjoy karaoke, a cosplay contest, and a night of anime under the stars. For more details, visit our website at [www.plateauhamedecolquhoun.com](http://www.plateauhamedecolquhoun.com).

Surviving the Summer Heat at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center offgrid living NM Desert!
Battling the Summer Heat at Ka-Hoon Campground
The relentless summer heat, with temperatures consistently soaring above 100 degrees, has been a real challenge for us. To keep our furry friends cool, they stay inside most of the day, where we mist them with cool water. As evening approaches and the temperatures drop, they joyfully spend their time playing outside.
We’re not much different. During the hottest parts of the day, we remain dormant indoors, in front of fans, sipping cool water. We try to tackle outdoor tasks early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. However, the heat can be so draining that even these times are challenging. We sometimes wonder if running the AC would make us handle the heat better or simply encourage us to stay inside more.
Despite these challenges, we remain committed to maintaining our beautiful campground and providing a welcoming space for all our visitors. Stay cool and hydrated out there!

Birdwatching Bliss at Ka-Hoon Campground!
**A Visitor from the Skies and Reflections on Our Journey**
Yesterday, we had a delightful little visitor—a hummingbird perched on one of our security cameras. It was a brief but beautiful moment that reminded us of the simple joys that nature brings, even amidst the challenges we face.
The intense heat and recent false accusations against us have left us feeling a bit discouraged, making us question if we chose the right location for our dream. Our vision has always been to create a safe haven for all—a place where you can play, listen to music, camp, and, instead of staying isolated in your RV, van, or tent, you can socialize around a fire, watch a movie under the stars, or sit and listen to music.
In our travels, we’ve stayed at numerous RV parks, state parks, and town parks. Unfortunately, we noticed a common theme: most people keep to themselves. We, however, love meeting individuals from all walks of life. We cherish hearing their stories, seeing them laugh, and watching them feel safe enough to just let loose. We thrive on creating a community where everyone feels welcome and valued.
Our goal is to help people and support local businesses. Despite the hurdles, we remain committed to our dream of building a community that fosters connection and joy. We hope that more people will come to see the beauty and peace our space offers, just like that little hummingbird did.
