Caught on Camera: Our First Months Off-Grid and an Unexpected Visitor!
When we first moved to the desert, every day was a new challenge â and a lesson in staying prepared. During our early months at **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun (Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center)**, we installed a security camera before heading into town, knowing that trips werenât quick and our belongings were left vulnerable.
Not long after, that camera paid off. We caught a visitor on video trying to walk off with something that didnât belong to them! Thankfully, we had chained the axles of our trailer, and it was empty at the time â that same trailer later became what we now call **The Hut**, our compost toilet.
It was one of those off-grid moments that reminds you why preparation matters. Every experience â even the tough ones â helped shape who we are today.
Now, as we celebrate **five years off-grid**, we invite you to join us for our **5th Anniversary Open Mic Night** on **Saturday, October 18th**. Come in person, stay for a night or a weekend, or tune in live from home on our **Colquhoun Entertainment TikTok** profile.
Life off-grid isnât always easy â but every story, every lesson, and every bit of resilience makes it worth it.

We Built Our First Solar Power System Off-Grid â Hereâs What We Learned!
Learning Solar Power Off-Grid: Our First 3K EcoWorthy Solar Build*
When we first moved off-grid, we knew that solar power would be essential â but we didnât know where to start. Building our first solar setup, a 3K EcoWorthy solar system, was definitely a learning curve. Neither of us had ever set up a solar array before, but with a little trial and error â and a few calls to a friend who had experience â we made it happen!
That first setup powered our essential equipment and helped us truly begin living independently in the desert. We quickly realized that solar wasnât as complicated as it first seemed â just a matter of patience, problem-solving, and willingness to learn.
Every system since then has gotten better, stronger, and more efficient. Weâve come a long way since those first panels went up!
***In honor of our 5th anniversary on Saturday, October 18th, weâll be hosting an Open Mic Night!***

Lost in the Desert? GPS Roads That Donât Exist | Our Off-Grid Journey đ§đ”
When GPS Roads Donât Exist: Finding Our Way Off-Grid in New Mexico
Hereâs another **video from the vault**! When we first started our off-grid journey, one of the biggest challenges wasnât just the desert heat or the windâit was simply finding our way home.
GPS showed us roads that no longer existed, leading us into dead ends, private property, and long detours. Over time, we rebuilt part of the road ourselves, carving out a path that made it easier to access our land.
Itâs just one more reminder that off-grid living isnât always simpleâitâs a constant journey of adapting and creating solutions.

Desert Flood Chaos! Music in the Desert Canceled đ§đŸ Off-Grid Life at Ka-Hoon Campground
When the Desert Floods: Life Off-Grid at Ka-Hoon Campground
Yesterday was a true reminder of desert life at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center. We spent most of the day in town running errands and attending appointments, racing the clock to get back in time for our **Music in the Desert livestream with Advocatus Diaboli**.
While it was only sprinkling in town, back home it was pouring. According to the **University of New Mexico Weather Tower located on our land**, we received 1.03 inches of rainâenough to flood and wash out the roads. Out here, anything over â
of an inch makes the dirt roads a challenge, and over an inch changes everything. We had to drive slowly, create new routes around deep washouts, and carefully navigate back to camp.
When we finally arrived home, we discovered our dog yard was completely flooded. Groceries, water, and supplies had to be carried through knee-deep water. The dogs had their own reactionsâDreugan and Lurch thought it was fun, Vibria dashed across as fast as she could, while Persephone decided sheâd rather stand on a cement block than get wet until we coaxed her through.
We had hoped the clouds would move on so that we could still do the livestream. But once we saw just how flooded and messy everything was, we didnât want to open up the music studio and risk damage. So, we had to cancel the show.
By this morning, most of the water inside the fence had drained, leaving only mud. Out here, **living off-grid in the New Mexico desert means adapting to natureâs extremes**âwhether itâs wind, heat, or sudden floods.
Stay tuned for more updates, stories, and our livestreams as we continue to share this adventure with you.

Our Last Visit Before Moving Off-Grid | Starting Life on 5 Acres in New Mexico!
From Dreams to Reality: Our Last Visit to the Land Before Moving to New Mexico
Back in January 2020, we purchased our 5 acres of land here in New Mexico. At that time, we knew the journey wasnât overâwe still had to return to Minnesota, finish working at the center for the summer, pack up our lives, and prepare for the big move.
This video from our vault captures our very last visit to the property before heading back north. Looking back now, itâs fascinating to see the land before anything was set up, before the campground and event center, before the community that has grown around Ka-Hoon.
In the video, we mention the mountains in the areaâbut since then, weâve learned we were mistaken about which ones we were looking at. Itâs a reminder that this whole adventure has been a learning experience, step by step.
Throughout October, weâre sharing more of these âvaultâ videos, each one a snapshot of our journey. Some are from before we made the move, and some from after. Itâs our way of showing the progress, the challenges, and the growth that brought us to where we are today.
Whether youâve been following our journey from the beginning or just discovered us now, we invite you to join us each day as we share more from our archive. And if youâd like to see where we are today, make sure to follow our TikTok livestreams, YouTube channel, and check out our website for camping and event info.

From Trailer to Toilet: Our Desert Campground Build from the Video Vault!
From Vault to Desert: Our Compost Toilet Adventure at Ka-Hoon Campground
Out here at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center, every project has a storyâand some of those stories are hiding in our video vault! Throughout October, weâll be sharing older videos from our **Plateau Hame De Colquhoun YouTube channel** to give you a peek at our journey moving to New Mexico.
You may also remember our older channel name, *Art of Tiny Living*. While that chapter helped define our beginnings, weâve since grown into something biggerârooted in music, events, camping, and desert life.
This featured video shows us moving the hut (our compost toilet building) from the trailer it was attached to, into its new place where it would eventually serve as the **compost toilet** for campers, visitors, and event-goers. Itâs one of those âmake it workâ projects that shaped the campground as it is today.
If youâre curious about **off-grid living, unique camping experiences, or just want a to see some of our early projects**, youâll want to watch this one!

He Sang Again After the Stroke đ± | Advocatus Diaboliâs Incredible Comeback
The trip to the ER felt endless. I was terrified of what weâd find outâand part of me wanted to turn around and pretend none of it was happening. When Brent stopped twitching for a moment, I almost did. But something deeper told me: keep going.
At Lovelace and the Heart Hospital in Albuquerque, the doctors and nurses were incredible. They treated us with care and respect when we needed it most.
This healing journey hasnât just been Brentâsâitâs touched all of us.
The day we returned home and he stepped into the studio to sing, I completely fell apart. I hadnât known if Iâd ever hear that voice again. Music is Brentâs passionâitâs part of who he is.
Some of my favorite moments in life are spent with him in the studioârehearsing, singing, doing livestreamsânot for an audience, but because we love it. Seeing him light up on stage or during a stream makes everything feel right. And Iâll admit⊠I was scared of losing that, of losing *us* in that way.
Recovery hasnât been easy, especially with his hand and arm. He goes to physical and occupational therapy twice a week, and we do exercises and massage together every day at home.
He doesnât always notice the small improvements. But I do.
Every time he moves a finger, grips something, or bends his wrist a little further, I see progress. I see strength. I see him.
We couldnât have completed the shower project without him. His helpâhis presenceâmeant everything.
I know Brent doesnât always feel like himself these days. But I see his light in every little victory. I see the man I love, growing stronger, even when he doesnât see it himself.
And through all of this, Iâve realized something:
**I love him even more than I ever knew.**

We Finally Took Our FIRST Off-Grid Shower! (But It Didnât Go Exactly As Planned đ )
Yesterday was a big dayâwe got to take our **first shower in our new off-grid shower setup**! After all the planning, ordering, adjusting, and waiting on parts, it felt amazing to finally rinse off right here at home.
Of course, no DIY project is ever *truly* finished on the first go. Weâve still got a few tweaks to make:
* The **drain piece we picked up was a bit too small**, so weâll need to replace it with a better-fitting one.
* Right now, weâre **placing the water pump inside the shower when not in use**, but thatâs not a long-term solution. We need to build or repurpose a small box or container to house it safely and neatly.
* Our **on-demand water heater runs on D batteries**, and the rechargeable ones we bought arenât doing the trick. Iâm going to give them one more good charge and see if that helpsâif not, weâll pick up some regular D batteries to test it out.
* We also need to **install a hanger for the showerhead** to avoid the awkward balancing act weâve been doing.
* And last but not leastâweâre on the hunt for **pallets and posts to build an outdoor privacy wall** around the shower.
Until the privacy wall goes up, showering means dressing and undressing under the wide open desert sky. Itâs totally fine when itâs just us out here, but less ideal when we have visitors or campers on-site.
Still, all of that asideâ**being able to shower at home again feels like a luxury.** Itâs a simple thing we used to take for granted, and now itâs a real treat to step into our own outdoor setup, clean off the desert dust, and not have to plan a trip to town for something so basic.
Weâll keep updating as we fine-tune the setup and build the privacy wall. Off-grid life may not always be convenient, but it’s always rewardingâespecially when you finally get to feel clean at home.
