Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert at Ka-hoon Campground and Event Center presents its own unique set of challenges. When we first arrived, the isolation was palpable – we were alone, unfamiliar with the area, and lacked local support. Sparse neighbors were rarely home, leaving us feeling vulnerable in our solitude.
However, amidst the vast desert landscape, our greatest challenge wasn’t the elements themselves, but rather the human element. It was here, in this remote setting, that I experienced profound personal growth. I learned to assert myself and protect my family in ways I never imagined.
Living off-grid in the desert has been a transformative journey, teaching me resilience, self-reliance, and the importance of standing up for what matters most. Though the challenges have been daunting, the lessons learned have been invaluable, shaping me into a stronger and more capable individual than ever before.
Remember when the free-range cattle paid us a visit, and we thought we were safe because they didn’t cause any damage? We were wrong. They broke a few solar motion lights, bent a few poles, damaged solar lights, and even broke a new security camera we recently installed. Despite setting up alarms to deter them, they seem undeterred now. We need to find a new solution, but we’re not keen on putting up an ugly fence. We prefer the views without one. They even knocked over and broke a limb off the stump that many visitors come to and leave a little something. To learn more about the stump, please visit the website. If anyone has suggestions, we’d love to hear them! We don’t mind the cattle; we just don’t like the damage they do. They are welcome to come close and hang out; just stay away from the solar panels, cameras, poles, and stump.

Living off-grid in the vast expanse of the New Mexico desert offers a lifestyle filled with unique challenges and rewarding moments. Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting a potluck meal with our neighbors, reminding us of the importance of community in our lives.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting hues of orange and pink across the desert landscape, we gathered to share food, stories, and laughter. Each dish was a labor of love, reflecting the diverse backgrounds and culinary traditions of our small community.
In a place where self-reliance is key, we’ve learned that community is equally vital. Whether lending a hand during tough times or celebrating life’s moments together, our bonds strengthen our sense of belonging and security.
Living off-grid presents unique safety considerations, from navigating rugged terrain to preparing for extreme weather. By fostering camaraderie and support, we create a safety net that extends beyond our individual homesteads.
As the evening closed and stars emerged overhead, illuminating the desert sky, we felt grateful for the connections forged with our neighbors. In a disconnected world, our desert community is a beacon of warmth and shared humanity.

Living out here on the Ka-Hoon Plateau Hame De Colquhoun has its unique charms, and one of my favorite aspects is the presence of free-range cattle. These majestic creatures usually keep their distance, but every now and then, they decide to pay us a visit.
Last night was one of those occasions, and it was quite the unexpected encounter. As I hadn’t turned on the motion alarms to keep the cattle away from our buildings and solar panels, one curious cow sauntered right up to our homestead. It seemed she had a particular craving and decided to make a stop at the Dusty Nail General Store – or at least, that’s what it looked like!
Standing just outside the dog fence, she seemed unfazed by the presence of our vigilant canine companions. With a nonchalant demeanor, she leisurely grazed on the grass, completely indifferent to the curious stares from our furry friends.
It’s moments like these that remind me of the beauty and unpredictability of life out here in the wilderness. Despite the occasional surprises, sharing our space with these gentle giants adds to the charm of our rustic lifestyle. Who knows what other adventures await us in the days to come?
