Weather impacts on off-grid living

From windy 80-degree day to snowing 34-degree day. Living off-grid depending on solar for electricity isn’t always easy. We are on day 3 of not much sun, which means we aren’t able to run many electrical items.

The 8k solar is set up so that we can hook a generator up to it, it’ll automatically start the generator if not getting enough sun to charge the batteries, and batteries get to a certain % of drainage, thus shutting the generator down once the batteries are charged. Whereas plugging straight into a generator, that generator has to stay running.

The issue is we do not have a generator that is capable of being hooked up to the solar (Capable one is on our wish list). So until then on cloudy days we start eliminating electric usage.

Not running lights, no tv, unplug any unnecessary items.

Dealing with High Desert Wind Storm’s

Warm sunny day, yet 40 mph gusts with 30 mph constant winds. Wind storms here aren’t much different then blizzards in MN. Visibility is bad, everything gets full of sand especially your eyes and mouth. You have to shut all windows, close curtains and doors to try keep the sands out, even then everything inside gets covered.
I usually wear a mask when outside, as my sinuses swell all up everytime it gets windy.

Safe Environment, Be yourself while camping

It seems so quiet here Plateau Hame De Colquhoun right now, first day in over a week we don’t have any campers.

We’ve had a couple people ask why we don’t post more pictures of people camping? We don’t share photos of people camping out of privacy and respect to anyone staying here.

As a camper you’re welcome to take photos. But we will not take any photos of anyone staying unless asked to do so…As a camper you’re welcome to take photos. But we will not of anyone staying unless asked to do so…

All are welcome, come be yourselves, enjoy yourselves within a safe environment!

Desert life means being prepared

We went out and did some target practicing yesterday. First photo is what Anne Calhoun did shooting at 100 ft. The video is what I did.

Anne and I both had been around guns in the past, but was never anything we used or had much interest in using. But being out in the desert sometimes includes being able to shoot if needed.. Since we didn’t have much experience we decided to take a few gun safety classes. Now that we all graduated with 100% on the range qualifications, we go out and practice.

Hopefully not something we have to do, but we know how.

Rattle snakes beware!!!!…lol

March in the Desert

We haven’t been posting as much as it has been quiet.. With the winds we haven’t been able to achieve much. We do have a full week of campers booked, and this weekend is supposed to be nice.

We have plans to get few things done this weekend. Remove more piled up tumbleweeds they love to pile up under the solar panels.

Today (weather permitting) we will be picking up another little building that we plan on using for a second compost toilet.

We where able to pickup a few plastic pallets that we hope to use for a small portable stage. We’ll be watching for more, or some nice wooden pallets for the main stage.

Don’t forget we are hosting Bringing in the 420 open mic on Saturday April 2nd! Campsites have been booking up, so if you’re looking to have a reserved site make sure to reserve your spot!

When you reserve a site you get early access to the grounds to set up.

Busy Week in the Desert

It’s been a busy week. We’ve had a week of campers, an event coming up April 2nd here at Plateau Hame De Colquhoun . Still don’t have everything set up the way we’d like, but that is mostly due to cost of lumber..

it’s warming up, though been windy. Which makes clearing tumble weeds a daily task, though Dreugan loves chasing them.

Waiting out Wind Storm

Sorry we haven’t posted in a few days. Last few days the only thing we’ve been doing has been sitting out the winds. “Fun” part of living on the desert is the winds, especially when you’re on a Mesa. When you go outside your eyes, mouth, get full of sand. Mask helps a little but not much.

Today was better, tomorrow we have another private event, which means getting things setup and cleaned up, tumble weeds are a never ending battle.

Another Wind Advisory

Went and ate at the RSH Steakhouse in Belen tonight, highly recommend going it ever in town!!

Back here Plateau Hame De Colquhoun we are getting ready for a small private event. We haven’t had much of a chance to start working on the new store front. But hoping soon we’ll be able to. So many projects, so little time. We have high wind advisories for tomorrow, which means we won’t get much done. But that’s okay as it’s off to the dentist tomorrow for me.

Plateau Hame De Colquhoun store Front

Got our store front building, now need to put roof on it, paint, then set up the inside. But all that has to wait for less windy day. Getting 46 mph gusts.. which made a good day to clear Tumble weeds and let them blow away.

Happy Valentine’s

Happy Valentine’s Day!! Today was a slow day, cleaned up tumble weeds that gathered under everything I guess part of desert life. Brent Colquhoun took Anne and I out to eat for Valentine’s at a wonderful local restaurant #oasis in #Belen.

Tomorrow we’ll be heading back into town to pickup a shipping box that we plan on using for either a store front or shower.
