Preparing the Desert for the Rangoli: Raking the Ground for Our Night of Intentions
As we prepare for our **Rangoli celebration on November 1st** at **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**, the desert is becoming our canvas. This night is all about **manifesting goals, intentions, and personal transformation** beneath the wide New Mexico sky.
Instead of using chalk or powders, weāll be **drawing directly into the sand**āletting the natural earth guide our designs. Each participant will create their own **Rangoli of Intentions**, using simple tools or even their hands to carve symbols that represent what they want to attract, release, or change in their lives.
To prepare, weāve begun our **first raking of the ground**, softening and smoothing the desert floor so itās ready for creation. The process itself feels symbolicāclearing away the old to make space for new energy.
When the Rangolis are complete, weāll gather around the **bonfire**, dance, and celebrate the intentions weāve set together. The night will blend **art, energy, and community**, bringing light and purpose to the desert sands.

Caught on Camera: Our First Months Off-Grid and an Unexpected Visitor!
When we first moved to the desert, every day was a new challenge ā and a lesson in staying prepared. During our early months at **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun (Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center)**, we installed a security camera before heading into town, knowing that trips werenāt quick and our belongings were left vulnerable.
Not long after, that camera paid off. We caught a visitor on video trying to walk off with something that didnāt belong to them! Thankfully, we had chained the axles of our trailer, and it was empty at the time ā that same trailer later became what we now call **The Hut**, our compost toilet.
It was one of those off-grid moments that reminds you why preparation matters. Every experience ā even the tough ones ā helped shape who we are today.

Learning Solar Power Off-Grid: Our First 3K EcoWorthy Solar Build*
When we first moved off-grid, we knew that solar power would be essential ā but we didnāt know where to start. Building our first solar setup, a 3K EcoWorthy solar system, was definitely a learning curve. Neither of us had ever set up a solar array before, but with a little trial and error ā and a few calls to a friend who had experience ā we made it happen!
That first setup powered our essential equipment and helped us truly begin living independently in the desert. We quickly realized that solar wasnāt as complicated as it first seemed ā just a matter of patience, problem-solving, and willingness to learn.
Every system since then has gotten better, stronger, and more efficient. Weāve come a long way since those first panels went up!

Surviving Desert Winds: How Our Off-Grid Outdoor Kitchen & Shower Were Put to the Test!
When we moved to New Mexico, we knew challenges were ahead. Wind was one of the biggest. Before moving, we tried to plan for it, but nothing could prepare us for days of **30 mph desert winds**. Our first outdoor kitchen lasted only two months before it was ripped apart.
With no choice, we purchased what we hoped would be a stronger replacement. At the same time, we reused parts from the broken kitchen to build an **outdoor shower area**. Living off-grid means adapting and rebuilding when nature pushes back.

GPS showed us roads that no longer existed, leading us into dead ends, private property, and long detours. Over time, we rebuilt part of the road ourselves, carving out a path that made it easier to access our land.
Itās just one more reminder that off-grid living isnāt always simpleāitās a constant journey of adapting and creating solutions.

Looking back at our very first week on the land feels like stepping into another lifetime. It was October 2020 when we first arrived, ready to begin our off-grid journey in the New Mexico desert. Within just seven days, we were faced with a learning curve like no otherā**intense winds, sudden snow, endless sand, curious cattle, and even the destruction of our first outdoor kitchen setup**.
But through it all, we had unforgettable sunsets, wide-open views, and the determination to keep moving forward. Every challenge became a lesson, shaping Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center into what it is today.

Desert Flood Chaos! Music in the Desert Canceled š§š¾ Off-Grid Life at Ka-Hoon Campground
When the Desert Floods: Life Off-Grid at Ka-Hoon Campground
Yesterday was a true reminder of desert life at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center. We spent most of the day in town running errands and attending appointments, racing the clock to get back in time for our **Music in the Desert livestream with Advocatus Diaboli**.
While it was only sprinkling in town, back home it was pouring. According to the **University of New Mexico Weather Tower located on our land**, we received 1.03 inches of raināenough to flood and wash out the roads. Out here, anything over ā
of an inch makes the dirt roads a challenge, and over an inch changes everything. We had to drive slowly, create new routes around deep washouts, and carefully navigate back to camp.
When we finally arrived home, we discovered our dog yard was completely flooded. Groceries, water, and supplies had to be carried through knee-deep water. The dogs had their own reactionsāDreugan and Lurch thought it was fun, Vibria dashed across as fast as she could, while Persephone decided sheād rather stand on a cement block than get wet until we coaxed her through.
We had hoped the clouds would move on so that we could still do the livestream. But once we saw just how flooded and messy everything was, we didnāt want to open up the music studio and risk damage. So, we had to cancel the show.
By this morning, most of the water inside the fence had drained, leaving only mud. Out here, **living off-grid in the New Mexico desert means adapting to natureās extremes**āwhether itās wind, heat, or sudden floods.
