This morning, we woke up to find the solar power out, which was strange since we had a full day of sun yesterday. As I lay in bed, my mind raced with possible reasons. My first thought was that maybe we’d forgotten to turn off the PA after rehearsal with the animatronics. That thing pulls about 3,000 watts, and we’ve accidentally left it on a few times before. But I distinctly remembered us shutting it down, so that couldn’t be it. The next thought, which I dreaded, was that something might be wrong with the solar system itself.
Eventually, I gave in and got up, mostly because the dogs decided it was time. Vibria was already calling from her box, ready to start the day. After letting the dogs out, I usually throw in a bit of fetch, fill up their water, and inevitably annoy them by going inside to make coffee. But not today. Today, I was on a mission to figure out what happened with the solar.
It didn’t take long to crack the case. Somehow, the fridge had switched to using both electric and gas. That means it draws power from the batteries first before automatically switching to gas when the power runs out. To make things worse, the RV charging system had switched to boost mode, which draws extra power to charge the RV batteries faster. Running both the fridge and boost mode overnight drained the system. It’s fine during the day when the solar’s up and running, but overnight? Not so much.
With a sigh of relief, I realized nothing was broken. Now, we’re just waiting for the sun to come up and recharge the solar. It’s a bit cloudy this morning, so it may take longer than usual, but it only takes about an hour or two of full sun to get the batteries back to normal.
Meanwhile, the dogs got their morning playtime, barked at a camper stopping by to say hello, and are now back to napping. Vibria’s curled up at my feet, and we’re just waiting on that coffee to percolate.

### Life at Ka-Hoon Campground: Helping Hands and Community Spirit
The past couple of days have been busy, but in the best way possible. Between assisting campers, rehearsing, and giving tours, our days are filled with activity and purpose. We love being part of this vibrant community and helping out wherever we can.
Just yesterday, we lent a hand to a neighbor who needed help towing his truck to a local mechanic. Today, we’re running errands with another neighbor to pick up concrete and other building supplies for his new home. It’s moments like these that make us appreciate the close-knit community we’ve built here.
For those unfamiliar with our journey to New Mexico, check out our early YouTube videos to see how it all began. We originally came here to help a lady clean up her property so she could host events. Now, she’s invited us back for a visit and some work. We’re looking forward to camping out there for a few days and enjoying some time in nature. Although some think we’re camping full-time, for us, living here is more than just camping—it’s a lifestyle we cherish.
If you happen to stop by the Love’s Travel Stops in Belen and see Anne working, be sure to say hello! Buy something, mention that you saw this post, and if you leave her a note with your name, email, or phone number, you’ll be entered into a drawing for a free “I Survived Music in the Desert” T-shirt. The winner will be announced at the Halloween Hootenanny!
Thank you for being part of our community and supporting our journey. We couldn’t do it without you!

Water Supply Challenges and Community Solutions at KaHoon Campground
### Water Supply Challenges and Solutions
We often get asked about how we manage our water supply. Here are some insights into our current options and challenges:
#### Bulk Water Hauling
We can haul bulk water using a 275-gallon IBC tote, which is the most cost-effective solution. We plan to rely on bulk water once we start building the shower facilities.
However, there are significant issues with hauling bulk water. The weight of the water combined with our rugged roads makes it tough on vehicles and trailers. The repair costs for our vehicles can outweigh the savings from hauling water ourselves. This challenge is one reason why we’ve paused our shower construction.
#### Community Solutions
We’re hoping that by banding together with the six households in our area, we can find a more sustainable solution. Ideally, we’d hire a delivery service that can cater to all of us. Unfortunately, our initial plan fell through when the suspension on our potential delivery person’s truck broke down.
#### Well Installation
The cost of drilling and maintaining a well isn’t feasible for us at this time. It’s a long-term goal, but for now, we need a more immediate solution.
#### Interim Measures
Until we figure out a reliable delivery method, either through a service or by organizing ourselves, we are using 5-gallon jugs filled at Twice the Ice. It’s not the most convenient method, but it gets us by.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate these challenges. We’re committed to finding a better solution soon.

Discover KaHoon Campground’s Solar Repair Adventure at Plateau Hame de Colquhoun!
**Discover Ka-Hoon Campground: A Lesson in Solar Maintenance and Community**
At Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center, the fusion of community and sustainability unfolds in unique ways, exemplified during a recent gathering at Cahoots Courtyard. We extend a warm welcome to visitors interested in our mission and activities, inviting you to schedule a personalized tour and chat.
During a leisurely Saturday with our newest Ka-Hoon Campground members, we encountered a practical lesson in solar panel maintenance. A cable from our solar array required attention, prompting us to shut down the main breaker for safety. After a straightforward repair involving relocating the cable to a spare connector, we inadvertently overlooked one crucial step – restoring power by turning the breaker back on.
The consequence of our oversight surfaced the following day while we were away running errands. An alert notified us of a potential shutdown of our inverter, a critical component of our solar setup. Thankfully, upon returning home, we swiftly rectified the situation, restoring normal operations and avoiding any prolonged disruption. Despite our prompt response, the afternoon’s overcast skies limited our solar recharge capacity, underscoring the importance of meticulous breaker management.
At Ka-Hoon Campground, these moments of shared learning and communal engagement define our commitment to sustainable living. Whether you’re captivated by our solar initiatives or simply eager to learn more about us and our aspirations, we encourage you to connect with our community. Join us on this journey where each day presents new insights and collaborative opportunities to thrive together.

Father’s Day at Ka-Hoon Campground: Off-Grid Living Adventures
Happy Father’s Day from Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center
Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful fathers! Today was an errand-filled day for us as we headed into town for groceries, laundry, and showers.
Yesterday, we discovered a cable had come off the combiner box from a set of solar panels. We made sure to flip the main breaker before starting the repair. However, while we were in town today, we received a notification that the inverter was offline. It dawned on us that we had forgotten to flip the breaker back on. With temperatures soaring over 100 degrees and no fans running inside, we rushed home, concerned about our dogs getting too hot.
By the time we arrived, the power had been off for an hour, but thankfully, the RV was still 25 degrees cooler than outside, and our dogs were happy to see us. While we are away, we monitor the temperatures inside and use cameras to check in on the dogs. When the inverter goes offline, we lose internet connectivity, but we do receive a warning indicating the inverter is nearing our shutdown point of 50%.
Despite the challenges of off-grid living, we are grateful for these experiences and the opportunity to celebrate Father’s Day with our loved ones.

Adapting to Off-Grid Living: Challenges and Rewards at Ka-Hoon Campground
Today marks the third cloudy day in a row, and with the heat, it’s been harder to conserve electricity. We’ve been running fans, and the fridge has to work overtime to stay cool. Plus, we spent a lot of time working in the studio. So, it wasn’t a surprise when we woke up this morning to find we don’t have electricity. But that’s fine. Today is cooler, the sky will clear, the sun will come out, and we always have the option of firing up the generator.
Electricity is nice, but we’ve learned to work around these types of days. Before moving here to New Mexico, we lived at an Environmental Education Center where we site-managed and worked on the music production side. We started out in an 8.5×16 fish house that we had converted into a cabin. Before buying the cabin, we lived in tents on the land.
Electricity was limited in our cabin. Though we didn’t have solar power, we did have shore power, but it required running a 200-foot heavy power cable. This meant our electricity was limited; we ran one LED lamp and a TV, and we used propane for heat and cooking.
These experiences have taught us how to adapt and make the most of what we have. Living off-grid has its challenges, but it also offers a unique and rewarding lifestyle that we wouldn’t trade for anything.

Thriving in the Desert: Life at Ka-Hoon Campground and Plateau Hame De Colquhoun
Embracing the Desert Life: Inspiration and Resilience at Ka-Hoon Campground
Living in the New Mexico desert brings a unique set of challenges and rewards. At Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center, we experience the raw beauty of nature every day. Here’s a glimpse into our life in the desert and how we find inspiration amidst the heat and rugged landscape.
#### Surviving the Desert Heat
The desert heat can be intense, but we’ve adapted to make the most of it. Our days start early, taking advantage of the cooler morning temperatures to get our outdoor tasks done. By midday, when the sun is at its peak, we retreat indoors to stay cool. Our dogs, too, find refuge inside, with plenty of water and an occasional misting to keep them comfortable. Despite the heat, we find ways to stay productive, whether it’s handling paperwork, working on music, or crafting.
#### Nature’s Drama: Turkey Buzzards and Free-Ranged Cattle
The desert is alive with wildlife. Just the other day, we witnessed turkey buzzards fiercely protecting their kill near our car—a stark reminder of the untamed spirit of nature. On the flip side, there are moments of serene beauty, like watching free-ranged cattle graze in the golden rays of a New Mexico sunrise. These experiences, both raw and tranquil, enrich our lives and connect us deeply to the land.
#### Finding Beauty in Everyday Moments
Living in the desert isn’t just about surviving; it’s about thriving and finding beauty in everyday moments. The vast, open landscapes, the stunning sunsets, and the star-filled night skies are constant sources of awe. Each day brings new experiences and challenges that test our resilience and inspire us to appreciate the simple pleasures of off-grid living.
#### Building a Community
Ka-Hoon Campground is more than just a place to live; it’s a community. We gather around the communal firepit, the Colquhoun Hearth, sharing stories, music, and laughter under the stars. Our events, like the monthly Music in the Desert Saturdays and the annual Drum Circle on the Longest Day of the Year, bring people together to celebrate life and nature.
