Desert Flood Chaos! Music in the Desert Canceled 🌧🐾 Off-Grid Life at Ka-Hoon Campground

When the Desert Floods: Life Off-Grid at Ka-Hoon Campground

Yesterday was a true reminder of desert life at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center. We spent most of the day in town running errands and attending appointments, racing the clock to get back in time for our **Music in the Desert livestream with Advocatus Diaboli**.

While it was only sprinkling in town, back home it was pouring. According to the **University of New Mexico Weather Tower located on our land**, we received 1.03 inches of rain—enough to flood and wash out the roads. Out here, anything over ⅓ of an inch makes the dirt roads a challenge, and over an inch changes everything. We had to drive slowly, create new routes around deep washouts, and carefully navigate back to camp.

When we finally arrived home, we discovered our dog yard was completely flooded. Groceries, water, and supplies had to be carried through knee-deep water. The dogs had their own reactions—Dreugan and Lurch thought it was fun, Vibria dashed across as fast as she could, while Persephone decided she’d rather stand on a cement block than get wet until we coaxed her through.

We had hoped the clouds would move on so that we could still do the livestream. But once we saw just how flooded and messy everything was, we didn’t want to open up the music studio and risk damage. So, we had to cancel the show.

By this morning, most of the water inside the fence had drained, leaving only mud. Out here, **living off-grid in the New Mexico desert means adapting to nature’s extremes**—whether it’s wind, heat, or sudden floods.

Stay tuned for more updates, stories, and our livestreams as we continue to share this adventure with you.

From Storage Unit Chaos to Desert Dreams – Downsizing for Our Move to New Mexico!

Downsizing for Our Big Move to New Mexico – A Look Back from the Vault

In today’s *Video from the Vault*, we’re taking you back to the time we had to seriously downsize for our move to New Mexico. Preparing to leave Minnesota meant sorting through our storage unit and making some tough decisions.

We held a big yard sale to sell the things we weren’t bringing along, and with the money raised, we bought new tires for our RV to make sure the trip was safe. Everything we decided to keep had to fit into one enclosed trailer—that was a challenge all on its own!

Along the way, we also made time to visit family, camp locally, and let the kids (both furry and non-furry) enjoy some fun before the journey began.

October is a special month for us—it marks our anniversary of moving here. We spent our first night on the land on October 18th, 2020. To celebrate our 5th year here, we’re sharing videos throughout October from our journey and setup.

✨ **Special Event**: On Saturday, October 18th, join us for an *Open Mic Night* at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center! Come in person for a night of music, camping, and community—or join us online through our Colquhoun Entertainment TikTok profile.

From Broken Trailer to Desert Dreams – The Wild Story Behind Our Move to New Mexico!

From Trailer Repairs to New Beginnings – Our Journey to Ka-Hoon Campground

October is a special month for us—it marks our anniversary of moving here to New Mexico. On **October 18th, 2020**, we spent our very first night on the land that is now **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center.**

In honor of this milestone, we’ll be posting **videos from the vault** throughout October, sharing our journey from Minnesota to the desert and the work it took to set up our off-grid home.

Before moving here, we had to figure out how to haul all our belongings. The solution came in the form of an old enclosed trailer… that turned out to need a LOT more work than we expected. We ended up replacing floor supports, laying new flooring, fixing wheel wells, repairing the roof, rebuilding the side and back doors, installing new tires, replacing wheel bearings, and rewiring the lights. Along the way, we even lost the tip of a finger—making this trailer a real blood, sweat, and tears project!

When the work was finally finished, the trailer was road-ready and became the backbone of our move, hauling everything we needed to start our new life in New Mexico.

Follow along this October as we share more from our vault of memories—before, during, and after the move—to celebrate four years of living and building in the desert.

Chaos in the Dusty Nail General Store! You Won’t Believe the Mess at Ka-Hoon Campground!

The Dusty Nail General Store – Tiny Souvenirs & Big Surprises at Ka-Hoon Campground

Yesterday when I went to clean up the store, I expected a bit of a mess—but I didn’t realize how much until I opened the door. The plastic drawer that holds charms, rings, glow sticks, and stickers had tipped over, scattering everything across the floor.

The **Dusty Nail General Store** is our tiny little souvenir shop here at **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center.** It runs on the honor pay system, allowing campers to browse and buy at their convenience.

Inside, you’ll find a mix of fun and unique items: charms, glow sticks, t-shirts, art, crochet stuffies, handmade washcloths, and dish towels. What makes it special is that the store doesn’t just feature items we’ve created—local makers from around the area also contribute their own handmade goods.

Whether you’re here for camping, events, or just passing through, the Dusty Nail General Store is a fun little stop to grab a memory of your time in the desert.

Our Last Visit Before Moving Off-Grid | Starting Life on 5 Acres in New Mexico!

From Dreams to Reality: Our Last Visit to the Land Before Moving to New Mexico

Back in January 2020, we purchased our 5 acres of land here in New Mexico. At that time, we knew the journey wasn’t over—we still had to return to Minnesota, finish working at the center for the summer, pack up our lives, and prepare for the big move.

This video from our vault captures our very last visit to the property before heading back north. Looking back now, it’s fascinating to see the land before anything was set up, before the campground and event center, before the community that has grown around Ka-Hoon.

In the video, we mention the mountains in the area—but since then, we’ve learned we were mistaken about which ones we were looking at. It’s a reminder that this whole adventure has been a learning experience, step by step.

Throughout October, we’re sharing more of these “vault” videos, each one a snapshot of our journey. Some are from before we made the move, and some from after. It’s our way of showing the progress, the challenges, and the growth that brought us to where we are today.

Whether you’ve been following our journey from the beginning or just discovered us now, we invite you to join us each day as we share more from our archive. And if you’d like to see where we are today, make sure to follow our TikTok livestreams, YouTube channel, and check out our website for camping and event info.

From Trailer to Toilet: Our Desert Campground Build from the Video Vault!

From Vault to Desert: Our Compost Toilet Adventure at Ka-Hoon Campground

Out here at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center, every project has a story—and some of those stories are hiding in our video vault! Throughout October, we’ll be sharing older videos from our **Plateau Hame De Colquhoun YouTube channel** to give you a peek at our journey moving to New Mexico.

You may also remember our older channel name, *Art of Tiny Living*. While that chapter helped define our beginnings, we’ve since grown into something bigger—rooted in music, events, camping, and desert life.

This featured video shows us moving the hut (our compost toilet building) from the trailer it was attached to, into its new place where it would eventually serve as the **compost toilet** for campers, visitors, and event-goers. It’s one of those “make it work” projects that shaped the campground as it is today.

If you’re curious about **off-grid living, unique camping experiences, or just want a to see some of our early projects**, you’ll want to watch this one!

Desert Roads Flooded After Just a Few Drops of Rain! Free-Range Cattle Loving It đŸŒ§đŸ„

Desert Rains Bring Surprising Floods Near Ka-Hoon Campground

Out here in the desert, it doesn’t take much rain to change the landscape. Over the last couple of days, we’ve had a little rain at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center—but not much at all. Just a few miles north of us, though, the roads told a different story.

Check out the video to see a few flooded spots, including one where free-range cattle were happily wading through the water. It’s amazing how such a small amount of rain can cause puddles, washouts, and mud across the mesa.

That’s desert life—one moment it’s dry and dusty, and the next, the roads are soaked. Even if we don’t get much on our end, the surrounding areas can flood quickly, and it can take a few days before the roads fully dry out.

Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert means embracing these surprises. From music echoing at Ka-Hoon Campground to cattle enjoying rainwater pools, the mesa is always full of unexpected beauty.

Living on an Island in the Sky 🌄 The Stunning Edge of the Mesa Overlooking the Rio Grande Valley

**Life on Our Island in the Sky – The Mesa Overlooking the Rio Grande Valley**

If you’ve followed our blog, watched our videos, or joined our livestreams, you’ve likely heard us describe our home as an *“island in the sky.”* What we mean by that is the mesa where we live—an elevated desert landscape with sweeping views and a beauty all its own.

Over the past months, we’ve taken you along the edge of this mesa during livestreams, and shared photos and clips that capture just a glimpse of the experience. But seeing it in person is something truly unforgettable. The edge drops off dramatically, opening to the breathtaking Rio Grande Valley below. It’s a reminder of the raw, natural power of the desert and why we chose this lifestyle in the first place.

Living off-grid on a mesa comes with its challenges—wind, isolation, and rugged terrain—but it also offers freedom, peace, and connection to nature that can’t be matched. Every sunrise and sunset feels like a gift when it stretches across the valley floor, painting the sky in colors that pictures never fully capture.

For us, sharing this journey isn’t just about showing the views—it’s about inviting you into the off-grid lifestyle, the lessons we’ve learned, and the beauty that makes it worthwhile. Whether you’re interested in off-grid living yourself or simply curious about life on the mesa, we hope our stories inspire you.

Stay tuned for more videos, livestreams, and photos as we continue exploring and sharing our island in the sky.
