Today has been a tough one for me, as I find myself reflecting on the drama that surrounds us when individuals try to impose their beliefs on others. Growing up in a small town in Minnesota, I was always different. We didn’t have much money, and I didn’t have the nicest clothes or belong to the “right” church. My last name wasn’t the right one, I wasn’t good at sports, and I had a learning disability. No matter how hard I tried to fit in, I was often met with bullying and name-calling.
I remember a nearby community of people who lived off-grid and homeschooled their kids. To me, that was the coolest thing, and I told a few people in my class, including teachers, that I wanted to live like them. Their response? “You don’t want to be like ‘those’ people.”
But now, I am living a similar lifestyle to what they referred to as “those” people. We live off-grid, and we homeschooled our kids, albeit through public school. It makes me question why people are so fearful of those who are different. Why is it not okay to be different?
The irony is that many of these same individuals claim to stand behind the Constitution. But does it make sense to support the Constitution and still ridicule or fear those who choose a different path? Our country was founded on freedom, not on what is deemed “normal.” Why can’t people be allowed to be themselves, to be different?
Living off-grid has allowed me to embrace the freedom I once admired in that community. It’s a reminder that the true essence of freedom lies in accepting and celebrating our differences, not in forcing others to conform. As we move forward, I hope more people will recognize that our strength as a nation comes from our diversity and the freedom to live authentically, whatever that may look like.

General Announcements
We’ve been dealing with the heat and working on staying cool.
A few solar issues arose recently, including a cable being torn off the combiner box. We are unsure how this happened but are currently working on better safeguarding the area to prevent future incidents.
Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band will be performing at Stage Luchetti on June 29th.
Needed
Additionally, we are in need of an old 10×10 canopy frame (or equivalent). We don’t need the top; the frame doesn’t need to be perfect but should be repairable. We plan to decorate it with fairy lights and set it up in the Cahoots Courtyard. If anyone has something that could work, please contact us.
Happy Father’s Day from Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center
Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful fathers! Today was an errand-filled day for us as we headed into town for groceries, laundry, and showers.
Yesterday, we discovered a cable had come off the combiner box from a set of solar panels. We made sure to flip the main breaker before starting the repair. However, while we were in town today, we received a notification that the inverter was offline. It dawned on us that we had forgotten to flip the breaker back on. With temperatures soaring over 100 degrees and no fans running inside, we rushed home, concerned about our dogs getting too hot.
By the time we arrived, the power had been off for an hour, but thankfully, the RV was still 25 degrees cooler than outside, and our dogs were happy to see us. While we are away, we monitor the temperatures inside and use cameras to check in on the dogs. When the inverter goes offline, we lose internet connectivity, but we do receive a warning indicating the inverter is nearing our shutdown point of 50%.
Despite the challenges of off-grid living, we are grateful for these experiences and the opportunity to celebrate Father’s Day with our loved ones.
It’s a languid Saturday here in the heart of New Mexico, where the warmth of the day encourages us to find ways to stay cool. Amidst this tranquil setting, I thought I would share a delightful moment captured on camera: a rabbit hopping through our grounds and Dreugan, our faithful companion, displaying his charming antics with a touch of bravado.
In this serene desert landscape, life moves at a gentle pace. The simplicity of our surroundings allows us to appreciate the small joys and whimsical occurrences that make each day unique. The video we captured offers a glimpse into these moments, showcasing the natural beauty and quietude of our off-grid existence.

Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band: A Unique Musical Experience
We are very proud of Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band. They arrived here last October to start performing in New Mexico, bringing their unique variety show to our region. The band is composed of talented vocalists and an animatronic band, offering an engaging mix of covers, parodies, and original songs. We are proud to support them and the venues they’ll be playing at.
Come out and support Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band along with Stage Luchetti during the 4th of July Celebration in Albuquerque on June 29th! Gates open at 7 pm. There will be delicious food served by Cecilia’s Cafe on Wheels, along with a variety of arts and crafts vendors.
Additionally, Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band will be performing here at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center during our 4th of July celebration on July 6th. Come camp and enjoy the show!

Yesterday, we took the campers on a tour of the mesa. With the day mainly being hazy and cloudy, the temperatures were a bit cooler than usual, which made the tour more enjoyable. The cooler weather was perfect for exploring the beautiful mesa and taking in the stunning views.
After the tour, we gathered around the bonfire in the Cahoots Courtyard for a relaxing evening. It was a cool night, perfect for sharing stories and enjoying the serene ambiance of the campfire.
We truly enjoyed seeing the campers and their families having a great time, appreciating the land, and getting to know each other. These moments of connection are what make all our work here at KaHoon Campground and Event Center worth it.
Today marks the third cloudy day in a row, and with the heat, it’s been harder to conserve electricity. We’ve been running fans, and the fridge has to work overtime to stay cool. Plus, we spent a lot of time working in the studio. So, it wasn’t a surprise when we woke up this morning to find we don’t have electricity. But that’s fine. Today is cooler, the sky will clear, the sun will come out, and we always have the option of firing up the generator.
Electricity is nice, but we’ve learned to work around these types of days. Before moving here to New Mexico, we lived at an Environmental Education Center where we site-managed and worked on the music production side. We started out in an 8.5×16 fish house that we had converted into a cabin. Before buying the cabin, we lived in tents on the land.
Electricity was limited in our cabin. Though we didn’t have solar power, we did have shore power, but it required running a 200-foot heavy power cable. This meant our electricity was limited; we ran one LED lamp and a TV, and we used propane for heat and cooking.
These experiences have taught us how to adapt and make the most of what we have. Living off-grid has its challenges, but it also offers a unique and rewarding lifestyle that we wouldn’t trade for anything.
