We love living out here at Plateau Hame De Colquhoun in the desert off-grid most of the time. There are a few conveniences we do miss. One is the ability to have deliveries, we are not able to get mail, packages delivered, which has caused issues in the past. Another one is the ability to take a shower whenever we like, even after getting the shower finished we won’t be able to take a nice long hot shower, as we haul all our water at 250 gallons at a time. Even after the shower is finished we plan to continue to shower at Planet Fitness like we do now.
We have electricity, water, privacy, beautiful views of mountains, sunsets, sunrises, stars, great neighbors, we can be as loud or quiet as we like. We love music, camping, movies and hanging out with others. All we can do here at home without issues. What more can you ask for?

Nomad Gathering in the Desert will be the 1st of many Nomad Gatherings organized by Plateau Hame De Colquhoun (Melodie and Brent)
NM Nomad Gathering in the Desert is a private gathering (not open to the general public) All Nomads welcome whether you live in a tent, van, car, 5th wheel, Schooly, RV… All are welcome!
NM Nomad Gathering in the Desert will be a 2 night 3 day private party of nomads coming together for food, fun, festivities, and fellowship.
Future New Mexico Nomad Gatherings in the Desert will be planned, organized by all participants. The first meeting will be held Saturday May 20th at noon.
The weekend will include a bonfire, Karaoke, Talent No Talent Show, Music, movie, Star gazing, Vendors and more.
Friday Night: 3 PM Nomad Opening meeting. Come together and get to know each other. If you’d like to host an event, this is the time to add it to the schedule. 4 pm Talent no Talent Show Silent Auction setup. Donate an item. All monies go towards betterment of the roads to and around Plateau Hame De Colquhoun. Dusk Outdoor Movie “Off The MAP” Sequestered on a ranch deep in the recesses of rural New Mexico, a part-Hopi woman (Joan Allen), her catatonic depressed husband (Sam Elliot) & their precocious 11-year old daughter (Valentina de Angelis) live off the land… Bonfire S’mores makings (S’mores kits can be purchased at the Plateau Hame De Colquhoun Booth). BYOB and 420 Friendly. This is a family event, we ask that you be responsible if you’re going to drink or partake in 420.

Dec of 2019 our family came to New Mexico to help a friend who lives on a ranch that has been in her family for almost 200 years, by Ruidoso. We had met this lady at a festival she attended and we site managed at. She had asked us to come spend the winter at her place, help clean it up, and build showers etc. so that she could hold festivals. We did come and did a lot of working clearing trees, barbwire, build a water tower for the shower. During our stay we found land we now live on Plateau Hame De Colquhoun . This weekend we are camping at our friends place, helping her with a few things and enjoying tent camping in (feels like) 19 degree nights at over 7000′ .

Living out here on the mesa, one thing we don’t have a lot of are neighbors (we call community members). All of us that are out here try to help each other. One way we try to help is by having community events, including a silent auction during the Nomad Gathering in the Desert . The hope is to use money we get from the silent auction to either buy long range walkie-talkies so all of us out here have a way to communicate if there is an issue. Right now we all rely on our cell phones and some don’t have service where they live. This will give us all a life line to each other.

Not everyone out here has away to keep the walkies charged. Our plan is to setup a charging station on our solar and have an extra walkie so if need be they can change out an uncharged walkie for a charged one.
We also would like to use any extra funds to help fix the roads. These are county roads out here, but the county does not maintain them. Right now a neighbor with a small tractor has been grading them.

Dusty Nail General Store isn’t yet raising anything towards community funds. But all the community members can sell their products within the store. We are hoping to add more community products as we grow.
We also talked that once we are up and going a % of all sells will go towards the community funds.

Due to the issues of people purchasing a registration for the Nomad Gathering in the Desert through the website. You can now purchase a registration on the website, contacting us or at the Dusty Nail General Store before or on the day of the event until May 10th.
Registrations can also be purchased the first day of the Gathering Friday May 19th at the Dusty Nail General Store. These registrations are for first come first serve camp sites. Please note First Come first serve spots are limited.

On the drive home from town I got to thinking about the dirt road and traveling it. This road is our biggest fear, why would people travel to attend an event. Though it’s washboard and has dips, it’s not a bad road as far as dirt roads go, it’s not rocky, pretty straight, there’s one hill but not a big hill.
For us to achieve our privacy, quietness, the views of mountains and skies (hardly any light pollution. We had to be off the beaten path. Out here you can be as loud as you like, all night if you want to. Beautiful sky views, You can run naked all day if you really want to (Not my thing but others may like it). But the point is by living down this road we have the ability to do those things.
Biggest issue we’ve have had so far with the road (That really surprised us). There are a lot of campers (probably about half that come) that don’t know how to travel a dirt road.
When traveling roads that are washboard (not talking dips, hills). Slow is not better, (not talking about pulling a 5th wheel as I’m not sure how they handle it) but class A, C, vans, cars, trucks, TT. When you drive to slow you hit every washboard rib. But give it some speed (each vehicle is different on how fast) you float over the top, you can still feel the ribs but not as bad, also in bigger vehicles slowly swerve back and forth.
It takes us about 20 minutes to travel the 11 miles in our RVs. The car, truck about 15 minutes.
We’d like to hear what you found that works, doesn’t work while traveling.
Camping and movie night was fun, we had a quick wind storm, which caused us to shut down the movie for little bit. We were able to watch both movies, and learned a few things that we need to fix to prepare sudden winds.
Next Camping and Movie night will be Saturday May 13th. Come celebrate Mothers day weekend by camping and watch a movie! Movie to be determined.
