Creating Through Change: Why We Keep Making Music and Hosting Events
In a world obsessed with numbers — views, ticket sales, profit, and constant noise — it can be difficult to explain why some of us keep creating anyway.
We live off-grid in the New Mexico desert. Life out here is quiet, demanding, and honest. You work because you must. You create because something inside you refuses to go silent. Survival has very little to do with money, politics, or religion — and everything to do with resilience, purpose, and community.
For us, music and events are not about chasing attention. They are about **connection**.
Joy Is the Measure, Not the Noise
My joy comes from seeing others happy because of something I helped create — campers feeling welcome, people settling in to listen, or an audience connecting with a performance.
Our livestreams have become a real source of that joy.
Attendance has been growing steadily. Many people listen quietly, fully present, faces focused on the music. Others reach out afterward to tell us how much the show meant to them. Some even arrange their schedules around the livestreams so they don’t miss them.
That kind of connection matters deeply.
Not every audience is loud. Some are listening — and that’s just as powerful.
Creating Through Adaptation
My partner is a writer and a creator. He builds worlds with words and emotion. He knows what a piece should feel like — the weight, the atmosphere, the message — even when the path to bringing it to life looks different than it once did.
What matters is not *how* something is created, but **who is creating it**.
The vision is still his. The words are still his. The intention is still his.
Adaptation doesn’t diminish creativity. It proves devotion to it.
Showing Up, Even When It’s Quiet
Livestreaming allows us to reach people we wouldn’t otherwise meet — people who listen from their homes, their workspaces, or quiet corners of their lives. Without it, we wouldn’t have this connection at all.
These moments — the listening, the messages afterward, the shared experience — are what remind us why we keep going.
Creation doesn’t need to shout to be meaningful.
Why We Keep Going
We believe people should be able to live in ways that make sense for them, adapt without being judged, and create without needing permission.
We don’t do this for money. We don’t do this for politics. We don’t do this for religion.
We do this because being human means creating, connecting, and caring — even when it’s quiet, even when it’s unconventional, even when the world isn’t watching.
And for those who have found us through the livestreams: thank you for being there, for listening, and for sharing this space with us.
We’ll be back in venues near you playing the show again — and **Music in the Desert livestreams will be returning soon**.
We’re still here. We’re still creating. And we’re grateful you are too.
Life Is Tough at Ka-Hoon Campground & Event Center (According to the Dogs)
If you ask our dogs, life at **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center** is incredibly demanding. Not because of danger, weather, or off-grid living — but because someone has to supervise *everything*.
Welcome to relaxed desert life at **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun**, where the biggest challenges involve lounging, watching humans work, and staring intensely at objects that may or may not move.
Living off-grid in central New Mexico has taught us that stress looks different out here. While humans juggle projects, events, and creative work through **Colquhoun Entertainment**, the dogs remain hyper-focused on their self-appointed roles: protector of nothing, rebellious observer, proper overseer, and professional fetch enthusiast.
This balance of calm, creativity, and humor is what makes **Ka-Hoon Campground** special. From hosting **Music in the Desert** to building community through off-grid living, we believe life doesn’t have to be rushed to be meaningful.
The dogs agree — as long as they’re included in every decision.
Whether you’re here for camping, events at **Ka-Hoon Event Center**, or just a glimpse into an off-grid lifestyle filled with personality, this is what desert living really looks like: grounded, creative, and just a little sarcastic.

🌵 How a Dirt Road Adventure Became Plateau Hame de Colquhoun
Six years ago, while our family was working a winter ranch job in **New Mexico**, we quietly began what would become a life-changing journey. Every spare dollar was being saved with one goal in mind — **buy land to create our own event center**.
For years, we had **site managed for other venues**, helping build dreams for others. Eventually, we realized it was time to build something for ourselves — something rooted in creativity, music, community, and freedom.
Our original dream was **Minnesota**, but reality set in quickly. Land prices, harsh winters, and short seasons meant we’d only be open a few months a year. **New Mexico**, on the other hand, offered affordability, open space, and weather that allowed us to be open **year-round**.
That realization changed everything.
—
🌄 The Land Hunt — and the Adventure to Get There
After looking at multiple properties, none truly felt right. Some were close to highways but lacked soul. Others were accessible but restrictive. Then we found *the one* — listed by a realtor we believe was based out of **New York**.
When we called, he warned us:
> *“You don’t want that one — it’s down some dirt roads.”*
That didn’t scare us. The property was **only 42 miles from Albuquerque**, had **no noise ordinances**, and required no complicated permits. To us, it sounded almost perfect.
So we set out early one morning from **Ruidoso to Belen**, planning to look at several pieces of land. The first few weren’t terrible, but they just didn’t feel right.
Then came the journey to the land we now own — and **that was an adventure all its own**.
—
🧭 GPS Lies, Arroyos, and Dead-End Roads
Following GPS turned into a wild goose chase. It led us down **dead-end roads in the middle of nowhere**, far from anything familiar. At one point, GPS took us straight toward an **arroyo**, and we **almost got stuck** trying to turn around.
Another route sent us down a road **filled with trash**. Instead of turning back right away, we stopped and **cleaned up the area**, only to realize after all that effort that the road went absolutely nowhere.
No exit. No turnaround. Just desert silence.
We were frustrated, tired, and close to giving up.
But then — we found better roads.
—
🌌 Love at First Sight — Even in the Dark
By the time we finally arrived at the property, it was **after dark**.
And yet… I fell in love instantly.
Standing there, looking out over the valley with **city lights glowing below**, the view was breathtaking. Quiet. Powerful. It felt like home.
Still, we knew we had to see it in daylight.
So we scheduled another trip, making this land our priority.
—
🌞 Daylight Confirmed What Our Hearts Already Knew
When we returned during the day, we fell even harder. The land was expansive, peaceful, and full of possibility. This wasn’t just property — it was a blank canvas.
This would become **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun LLC**, home to **Ka-Hoon Campground** and **Ka-Hoon Event Center**.
—
💔 Almost Lost — Then Everything Changed
When we called the realtor to say we wanted the land and could pay immediately, our hearts sank.
Someone else had claimed it.
We sat there defeated, feeling like we had lost a battle — and then, **less than five minutes later**, the phone rang again.
*“The land is yours.”*
It took a moment to sink in. Then adrenaline kicked in. Debit card already in hand.
**The land was ours.**
—
🎶 Six Years Later — A Dream Built Off-Grid
That moment happened on **January 5th, 2020** — six years ago.
Today, that once-hard-to-reach land is home to:
* **Colquhoun Entertainment** * **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun LLC** * **Ka-Hoon Campground** * **Ka-Hoon Event Center** * **Music in the Desert** * **Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band** * **Melodie’s Oddities** * **Dusty Nail General Store** * **Offgrid Talk** * **Melodious**, tying it all together
What began as a risky drive down dirt roads — through arroyos, trash-filled paths, and wrong turns — became a place where **music echoes**, **off-grid living thrives**, and **community is built under desert skies**.
