GPS Took Us to Dead Ends & Arroyos… How We Found Our Off-Grid Dream

🌵 How a Dirt Road Adventure Became Plateau Hame de Colquhoun

Six years ago, while our family was working a winter ranch job in **New Mexico**, we quietly began what would become a life-changing journey. Every spare dollar was being saved with one goal in mind — **buy land to create our own event center**.

For years, we had **site managed for other venues**, helping build dreams for others. Eventually, we realized it was time to build something for ourselves — something rooted in creativity, music, community, and freedom.

Our original dream was **Minnesota**, but reality set in quickly. Land prices, harsh winters, and short seasons meant we’d only be open a few months a year. **New Mexico**, on the other hand, offered affordability, open space, and weather that allowed us to be open **year-round**.

That realization changed everything.

🌄 The Land Hunt — and the Adventure to Get There

After looking at multiple properties, none truly felt right. Some were close to highways but lacked soul. Others were accessible but restrictive. Then we found *the one* — listed by a realtor we believe was based out of **New York**.

When we called, he warned us:

> *“You don’t want that one — it’s down some dirt roads.”*

That didn’t scare us. The property was **only 42 miles from Albuquerque**, had **no noise ordinances**, and required no complicated permits. To us, it sounded almost perfect.

So we set out early one morning from **Ruidoso to Belen**, planning to look at several pieces of land. The first few weren’t terrible, but they just didn’t feel right.

Then came the journey to the land we now own — and **that was an adventure all its own**.

🧭 GPS Lies, Arroyos, and Dead-End Roads

Following GPS turned into a wild goose chase. It led us down **dead-end roads in the middle of nowhere**, far from anything familiar. At one point, GPS took us straight toward an **arroyo**, and we **almost got stuck** trying to turn around.

Another route sent us down a road **filled with trash**. Instead of turning back right away, we stopped and **cleaned up the area**, only to realize after all that effort that the road went absolutely nowhere.

No exit. No turnaround. Just desert silence.

We were frustrated, tired, and close to giving up.

But then — we found better roads.

🌌 Love at First Sight — Even in the Dark

By the time we finally arrived at the property, it was **after dark**.

And yet… I fell in love instantly.

Standing there, looking out over the valley with **city lights glowing below**, the view was breathtaking. Quiet. Powerful. It felt like home.

Still, we knew we had to see it in daylight.

So we scheduled another trip, making this land our priority.

🌞 Daylight Confirmed What Our Hearts Already Knew

When we returned during the day, we fell even harder. The land was expansive, peaceful, and full of possibility. This wasn’t just property — it was a blank canvas.

This would become **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun LLC**, home to **Ka-Hoon Campground** and **Ka-Hoon Event Center**.

💔 Almost Lost — Then Everything Changed

When we called the realtor to say we wanted the land and could pay immediately, our hearts sank.

Someone else had claimed it.

We sat there defeated, feeling like we had lost a battle — and then, **less than five minutes later**, the phone rang again.

*“The land is yours.”*

It took a moment to sink in. Then adrenaline kicked in. Debit card already in hand.

**The land was ours.**

🎶 Six Years Later — A Dream Built Off-Grid

That moment happened on **January 5th, 2020** — six years ago.

Today, that once-hard-to-reach land is home to:

* **Colquhoun Entertainment**
* **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun LLC**
* **Ka-Hoon Campground**
* **Ka-Hoon Event Center**
* **Music in the Desert**
* **Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band**
* **Melodie’s Oddities**
* **Dusty Nail General Store**
* **Offgrid Talk**
* **Melodious**, tying it all together

What began as a risky drive down dirt roads — through arroyos, trash-filled paths, and wrong turns — became a place where **music echoes**, **off-grid living thrives**, and **community is built under desert skies**.

And this… is still just the beginning.

We Had to Redesign Our Entire 5K Solar Build at the Last Minute

🔆 Another Day Building Our 5K Off-Grid Solar System

Building off-grid infrastructure is never as simple as it looks on paper — and today was a perfect example of that.

We spent another long day working on our **5K solar power system**, a critical part of keeping our off-grid campground and event space running sustainably. While we were excited to finally get everything installed, the process came with an unexpected challenge right out of the gate.

The frame that was purchased with the solar panels turned out to be **missing several major components**, parts that were essential to assembling the system safely and correctly. Unfortunately, replacements for those components weren’t available anywhere, which meant we had no choice but to **redesign the entire setup from scratch**.

Redesigning a solar system mid-build isn’t ideal, but off-grid life teaches you flexibility fast. After reassessing the structure, sourcing alternative parts, and adjusting the layout, we were finally able to move forward.

By the end of the day — just before the sun dipped below the horizon — we successfully completed **one full solar unit and got it installed into place**. Seeing it standing and ready was a huge win after the setbacks earlier in the day.

Every step like this brings us closer to a stronger, more reliable **off-grid solar power system**, helping us reduce reliance on generators and keep our desert operation running efficiently. Progress may not always be fast, but it’s always worth it.

Stay tuned — there’s much more solar work ahead as we continue building a resilient, sustainable future off-grid.

Happy New Year From the Desert 🌵 Music, Community & Off-Grid Life | Plateau Hame de Colquhoun

🎆 Happy New Year from Plateau Hame de Colquhoun LLC – A Look Back at 2025

Happy New Year from all of us here at **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun LLC**! As we step into a brand-new year, we want to take a moment to look back on **2025** — a year that challenged us deeply, changed us forever, and reminded us why community truly matters.

This past year has been one of the **hardest and most emotional** of our lives. We faced countless hurdles, unknowns, fears, and major changes. At times, the road ahead felt impossible. But together, we continue to **survive, adapt, and overcome** — one step at a time, one sunrise in the desert at a time.

🌵 A Growing Desert Family

In **September**, we began a new journey by sharing our lives on **TikTok**, opening a window into off-grid desert living, creativity, music, and real conversations. Since then, our **desert family has grown beyond anything we could have imagined**.

Even if you don’t live here in the New Mexico desert, you are part of this community. Our livestreams on **Colquhoun Entertainment** wouldn’t be what they are without you. Your presence, comments, encouragement, and shared laughter mean more than words can say.

🎶 Music in the Desert & Creative Survival

One of the brightest lights in a difficult year has been **Music in the Desert** — a place where music, laughter, bonfires, and real connection come together. Through **Music in the Desert**, live streams, hosted  by **Advocatus Diaboli and Melodious,  with special appearances of the Grim Leafer Band**, we’ve been able to turn hardship into art and stress into sound.

Music has helped us heal, helped us keep moving forward, and helped us stay connected when life felt overwhelming.

🏕️ Gratitude Beyond Words

We want to thank:

* Our **campers** at **Ka-Hoon Campground**
* Everyone who attended events at **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**
* Our online friends and supporters
* Our **Offgrid Talk** community
* Everyone who stood by us during our most frightening moments

This year tested us in unimaginable ways — including a terrifying medical emergency when **Brent suffered a stroke**, and we almost lost him. It was a time filled with fear, uncertainty, and long nights. The love and support we received during that period will never be forgotten.

🌅 Looking Toward 2026

While 2025 was incredibly hard, it also showed us how strong this community truly is. As we move into **2026**, we do so with hope — hope for healing, stability, creativity, and brighter days ahead.

From all of us at:

* **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun LLC**
* **Colquhoun Entertainment**
* **Ka-Hoon Campground**
* **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**
* **Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band**
* **Music in the Desert**
* **Offgrid Talk**

✨ **Thank you for being part of our journey. Happy New Year. Here’s to a better 2026.** ✨

Day 2 Off-Grid Solar Build + New Year’s Music in the Desert LIVE Tonight!

**Day 2 of the Solar Build at Ka-Hoon Campground & Event Center**

Day 2 of our solar build is underway here at **Ka-Hoon Campground** and **Ka-Hoon Event Center**, and like most off-grid projects, planning hasn’t been as simple as it looked on paper.

When we purchased our solar setup, it came with a metal frame designed to be bolted together. What it didn’t include were the pipes needed to hold the frame upright. The challenge? We can purchase the pipe, but hauling **22-foot lengths** out to our off-grid location just isn’t possible for us.

Our first solution was to buy shorter pipe sections, have them threaded, and connect them together. Unfortunately, the local pipe place doesn’t offer threading services and doesn’t carry the connectors we’d need. With limited options and no way to fabricate the parts ourselves, we had to pivot once again.

So **Day 2 became all about problem-solving** — rethinking the mounting system and figuring out a setup that works with our tools, transport limitations, and off-grid reality. Today’s plan is to move forward with **building and assembly** now that we have a clearer direction.

## **Music in the Desert – New Year’s Party Update**

As we continue the build, we’re also finalizing plans for **Music in the Desert**. We’re still dialing in the best start time for **tonight’s New Year’s Party**, but right now it’s looking like **8 PM MST**.

Join us live on **TikTok and YouTube via Colquhoun Entertainment** as we ring in the New Year with music, creativity, and off-grid vibes. Hosted by **Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band**, with **Melodious** keeping things flowing, this will be a celebration you won’t want to miss.

## **Join Us for Offgrid Talk – Every Morning**

Bullied, Broken, Ignored… This Story Shows What They Never Saw | A Real Healing Journey

Bullied, Broken, Ignored… This Story Shows What They Never Saw | A Real Healing Journey

Kadie was a gentle child—bright-eyed, soft-hearted, and deeply in love with animals. She was the kind of little girl who talked to everyone, who trusted easily, and who believed the world was just as kind as she was.

Preschool had encouraged that belief. She thrived there. She learned quickly, made friends easily, and woke up excited for each new day. She couldn’t wait for kindergarten—the next big step, new friends, new lessons, new adventures.

But kindergarten was the year everything changed.

Her teacher’s explanations left her confused. Concepts that once came naturally suddenly felt tangled. By the end of the year, Kadie—once confident—had forgotten her alphabet. Instead of feeling supported, she felt lost.

The confusion didn’t go unnoticed by her classmates. Children who once played beside her began to whisper, giggle, and point. When testing finally revealed that Kadie had a mild learning disability, she was placed into a resource room for reading and math. There, she finally understood the material—yet the better she did in the resource room, the worse she was treated in her regular classroom.

Names like “dumb” and “retarded” followed her down hallways. It didn’t stop there. She stopped taking care of herself. She gained weight. And the bullies used that too.
“She’s so fat the floor moves!”
The cruel jokes, the stomping sounds behind her… it never stopped.

Kadie wanted nothing more than to be accepted. She tried telling stories—stories meant to impress—but they only gave the bullies more ammunition. School became something to survive, not a place to learn.

The bullying didn’t end at school. It followed her onto the bus. It followed her home. Even her brother joined in. And her parents, believing they were helping her lose weight, compared her to other overweight people—thinking it would motivate her. Instead, it made her feel smaller, more ashamed, more broken. She didn’t want comparisons. She wanted someone to look at her and say, *You’re beautiful. You’re smart. You matter.*

There was no safe place. No soft landing. No one who truly saw her.

Over time, Kadie began to believe the things she heard: that she was stupid, ugly, worthless. At only sixteen, drowning in hopelessness, she attempted to end her life. She took pills and slept for hours. No one noticed. No one asked if she was okay. That loneliness cut deeper than any insult ever had.

Desperate to avoid pain, she withdrew from everyone. Silence became her shield. But silence isn’t healing—it’s just hiding.

Eventually, she gathered the courage to talk to the school counselor, who helped her get into therapy. She wanted to open up, but the words felt dangerous. What if speaking her truth only hurt her more? When her therapist couldn’t reach her, they assumed she wasn’t benefiting. Kadie took that as another failure—*I can’t even do therapy right.*

Thoughts of suicide returned throughout her teens. She believed nobody would care if she disappeared—until someone she knew took his own life. Seeing the devastation left behind changed everything. Kadie promised herself she would never inflict that kind of pain on another soul. She had always cared deeply about others. She had already vowed never to bully anyone, never to hurt someone the way she had been hurt.

As an adult, Kadie finally found ways to express what she had never been able to speak. She started writing. She started drawing. She helped others, and in doing so, slowly helped herself.

The scars are still there—self-esteem issues, fear of meeting new people, the constant worry that someone will turn cruel. Bullying doesn’t simply disappear when school ends. Its impact lingers in the quiet moments, in the way a person sees themselves, in the fears they carry.

**Kadie survived. But no child—no adult—should ever have to carry the weight of what she endured.**

If you or someone you know is being bullied, speak up.
Reach out.
Tell someone.

**Silence is where bullying grows.
Support is where it ends.**
