When the Desert Floods: Life Off-Grid at Ka-Hoon Campground
Yesterday was a true reminder of desert life at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center. We spent most of the day in town running errands and attending appointments, racing the clock to get back in time for our **Music in the Desert livestream with Advocatus Diaboli**.
While it was only sprinkling in town, back home it was pouring. According to the **University of New Mexico Weather Tower located on our land**, we received 1.03 inches of raināenough to flood and wash out the roads. Out here, anything over ā
of an inch makes the dirt roads a challenge, and over an inch changes everything. We had to drive slowly, create new routes around deep washouts, and carefully navigate back to camp.
When we finally arrived home, we discovered our dog yard was completely flooded. Groceries, water, and supplies had to be carried through knee-deep water. The dogs had their own reactionsāDreugan and Lurch thought it was fun, Vibria dashed across as fast as she could, while Persephone decided sheād rather stand on a cement block than get wet until we coaxed her through.
We had hoped the clouds would move on so that we could still do the livestream. But once we saw just how flooded and messy everything was, we didnāt want to open up the music studio and risk damage. So, we had to cancel the show.
By this morning, most of the water inside the fence had drained, leaving only mud. Out here, **living off-grid in the New Mexico desert means adapting to natureās extremes**āwhether itās wind, heat, or sudden floods.
Stay tuned for more updates, stories, and our livestreams as we continue to share this adventure with you.

Desert Roads Flooded After Just a Few Drops of Rain! Free-Range Cattle Loving It š§š
Desert Rains Bring Surprising Floods Near Ka-Hoon Campground
Out here in the desert, it doesnāt take much rain to change the landscape. Over the last couple of days, weāve had a little rain at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Centerābut not much at all. Just a few miles north of us, though, the roads told a different story.
Check out the video to see a few flooded spots, including one where free-range cattle were happily wading through the water. Itās amazing how such a small amount of rain can cause puddles, washouts, and mud across the mesa.
Thatās desert lifeāone moment itās dry and dusty, and the next, the roads are soaked. Even if we donāt get much on our end, the surrounding areas can flood quickly, and it can take a few days before the roads fully dry out.
Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert means embracing these surprises. From music echoing at Ka-Hoon Campground to cattle enjoying rainwater pools, the mesa is always full of unexpected beauty.

We Drove Through a Flooded Desert RoadāWater Over the Doors!
**Monsoon Season Hits the Desert With a Vengeance: Our Flooded Road Adventure**
Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert means you’re always at the mercy of natureāand monsoon season doesnāt show mercy. This year, it came in swinging.
We had heard the monsoon was headed our way, so we made a quick run into town to grab water and essentials. What we didnāt expect was just how fast the roads would flood. Eleven miles of dirt road turned into a wild riverbed, and by the time we hit mile five, we were deep in itāliterally.
The water rose fast and high, at points reaching the bottom of the car doors. We had the pedal to the floor and still barely crept forward. The carās exhaust bubbled under the surface of the flood water as we pushed throughāhoping not to stall out.
And just like that, we reached homeāwhere it hadnāt rained at all. The land was dry. Not a single drop. Thatās the strange beauty of monsoon season in the high desert: one area can be underwater while another stays bone dry.
š„ **Watch the video** of our wild journey back home and see for yourself what life off-grid in the desert really looks like during a monsoon.

Almost Gave Up on This Off-Grid Shower Build⦠But We Pushed Through! šŖš ļø
š¦ļøāÆRainy Desert Days & A Shower Build Full of Lessons
DIY Life at Plateau Hame de Colquhoun
Itās been a stretch of cloudy, rainy, and warm days here on the New Mexico desert ā and despite the gloomy skies, weāve been pushing forward with our off-grid shower build at Plateau Hame de Colquhoun.
The main structure is now complete! We still need to install the on-demand water heater, finish the drainage system, and run the water hoses ā but we’re close. The only thing holding us back now is gathering a few more supplies.
This build hasnāt exactly been smooth sailing ā not because it was technically complex, but because of our learning curve with tools and miscommunications during the process. With Brent still recovering from multiple strokes and carotid artery surgery, he’s limited to using only one good arm. That means our teamwork has been more important than ever ā and sometimes, a bit chaotic.
While Anne and I were finishing up the door, I broke three drill bits and stripped out more screw heads than I care to admit. Frustrated, Brent stepped in to help. Despite only having the use of one arm, he drilled the holes and put in the screws like it was nothing. Honestly, it was inspiring to watch ā he made it look effortless. But it came with a cost. His bad arm, hand, and shoulder swelled up afterward. Thankfully, the swelling had gone down by the next morning. It was a reminder of both how far heās come in recovery and how important it is to pace ourselves.
Just a few weeks ago, he couldnāt even hold a drill. And now? Heās back to problem-solving and building ā one-handed and determined. Weāll be wrapping up the final plumbing parts soon and will share the full off-grid shower reveal once everythingās running!
Thanks for following along with our journey ā from stroke recovery and DIY struggles to homestead progress and desert storms.
Stay weird & wild,
\~The Ka-Hoon Crew
