My dad always said, *āYou can tell how poor someone is by the number of dogs they have.ā* Well, here we are again with four dogs. Does that make us really poor? Financially, sureāweāre not rich by any means. But if I could live without money, Iād be perfectly happy.
The truth is, how much money you do or donāt have doesnāt define your wealth. A rich man can be poor in spirit, unhappy in life, and never truly free. On the other hand, someone with very little money can live a life overflowing with joy, love, and meaning.
For me, real wealth is found in living the life weāve built out here in the desert. We created our land so people from all walks of life can come together, feel safe, and simply be themselves. Itās a place to laugh, to connect, to meet new friends, and to escape the pressure of the outside world.
That, my friends, is wealth. Not in a bank accountābut in the heart, in the connections we share, and in the freedom to live authentically.

Life, Heat, and a Little Hurricane Named Vibria
Between the extreme desert heat, doctor appointments, and just everyday life, itās been tough finding time to sit down and create a new video update from the Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center. But today, weāve got a story to share ā about one wild, clever, and incredibly determined pup named Vibria.
### Meet Vibria: Our Carolina Dog With Puppy Brain
Vibria, our Carolina dog, is turning one next month ā and while sheās growing fast, her puppy energy is still in full force. Her absolute favorite pastime? Tearing up paper. We keep our burnable trash (paper, cardboard, etc.) in a special bin inside, but if Vibria gets near it, thereās guaranteed to be a confetti explosion.
We’ve honestly never gone through so many collars and harnesses in our lives. She *loves* wearing them ā throws a little tantrum when sheās not ā yet somehow she always manages to chew through them or snap a buckle when we least expect it.
### Escape Artist Extraordinaire
Vibria has earned her title as the campgroundās official *Escape Artist*. Despite chicken wire lining the bottom of our fenced yard (because yes, she figured out how to squeeze through), she continues to find creative ways to get out. Whether itās tearing through the wire, climbing the fence, or digging under it ā sheās out the moment you blink.
Strangely, she never tries to run when sheās in the RV or the car. But left alone in the yard for two seconds? Sheās off chasing lizards, snacking on cat food, or playing with the campground kitties.
### From Roadside Rescue to Ka-Hoon Family Member
Vibriaās story started on Calhoun Street in Roswell, where she and her two littermates were abandoned in a ditch. A kind-hearted woman rescued them, and after a six-hour round trip, we brought Vibria home. Since then, sheās become a beloved member of our quirky Calhoun family at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center.
From tearing up paper to escaping like a furry Houdini, Vibria keeps us on our toes ā and we wouldnāt have it any other way.

Desert Shower Upgrade Hits a Snag ā But Weāre Not Giving Up! šŖšµ
Desert Life Update: Shower Progress, Greywater Plans & Desert Heat Challenges**
The desert heat has been relentless lately, and itās definitely slowed down our momentum ā but progress is still happening here at Plateau Hame de Colquhoun!
We recently installed the **on-demand water heater** in the outdoor shower. It was a quicker project than expected, thanks to Brent gaining back his strength. What wouldāve taken Anne and me a full day was done in just about an hour with Brent handling the drilling and planning.
That said, we hit a small snag ā weāre still missing the proper parts to connect the water hoses to the IBC tote. Weāve got plenty of fittings, but of course, the threads donāt match. So now weāre waiting on our next trip into town to grab the right ones.
### Next Step: Fixing the Shower Drain
Our next focus is the shower **drain system**. What we had originally planned ā and even have all the parts for ā isnāt working quite the way we hoped. The drain cap currently sticks up about half an inch above the floor. Not only will that cause drainage issues, but itās also a perfect toe-stubber in the making.
So, the new plan is to use a **larger hole saw** to widen the existing drain hole. Weāll take apart the pre-assembled drain, and (fingers crossed) get it installed flush with the floor. Building something from scratch ā especially when itās not based on traditional blueprints ā comes with a fair amount of trial and error. But weāre figuring it out as we go, and we *will* prevail.
### Looking Ahead: Greywater & Future Plans
Once the water is flowing and the on-demand heater is fully functional, weāll move on to the **greywater system**. The plan is for the shower water to drain into a buried IBC tote, where weāll **reuse it for plants** around the camp.
Eventually, Iād love to create a more advanced setup ā routing the greywater through a **worm bed**, into a **hydro garden**, and finally into a **recycled water container** for later use. But weāre not quite ready for that yet. A system like that needs sun protection to keep the worms alive, and weāve got other priorities first.
### Whatās Next on the Build List:
* Construct **walls around the shower** to create a private dressing area
* Use **pallets and garden posts** to build the dressing area structure
* Create space nearby for a **washing machine hookup**
* Finish building out our **solar system** ā we *hopefully* have everything we need for it, we just need a stretch of good weather, good health, and available time to get it done
Out here, building off-grid isnāt always easy ā but itās rewarding. The process may be slower than weād like (especially under this sun), but each step gets us closer to a self-sustaining desert homestead.

Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert definitely has its perksāpeace, open skies, and plenty of spaceābut it also comes with its share of *wild* surprises. One of those surprises? **Free-range cattle.** Yep, real-life, unsupervised cows just roaming the land like they own the place.
Here at **Ka-Hoon Campground**, weāve come to a sort of āunderstandingā with these four-legged locals: they stay out of our main event and camping area, and we let them graze in peace. Unfortunately, **this morning, that agreement was broken. Again.**
While heading out to encourage them back where they belong, **two bulls decided it was the perfect time for a desert showdown.** With no phone on me (of course!), I had to move cautiously between two full-grown bulls *going head-to-head*āright where our guests usually enjoy their morning coffee.
After a tense few moments, they moved out of our main zone and continued their standoff across the wayā¦ for over an hour! Once I made it back to the RV, I captured some of their ongoing match from a safe distance.
**Itās not every day you witness a bull brawl in your backyard,** but out here in the wild west of New Mexico, itās just another morning.

Campground Shower Build Progress: Teamwork, Challenges, and Big Plans for Off-Grid Living!
Today was a huge milestone for our off-grid shower project at Ka-Hoon Plateau Hame De Colquhoun ! We tackled the hardest partāgetting the 350-gallon IBC tote lifted, aligned, and secured on top of the first one to build our campground shower system. It was definitely more than Anne and I could handle alone, but with Brentās help (and some neighborly support), we made it happen!
Once we figured out how to lift, turn, and line up the tote, a neighbor arrived just in time to help us cut the door and anchor everything down securely. Weāre so grateful for the community supportāthis project wouldnāt have been possible without it!
Next steps include adjusting the plastic liners, installing an additional liner piece to lock everything into place, building a door, and plumbing the water heater and shower head. Weāre also planning to add a small changing area outside the shower space, with hopes of someday installing a washing machine to make off-grid life even more comfortable for our campers and ourselves.
Every step we take brings us closer to improving the campground experience here in the New Mexico desert. This off-grid DIY shower will be available for campers to use for a small fee to help cover water and propane costs.

Brent’s Healing, Music Magic & DIY Shower BuildāOff-Grid Life Update!
Weāre slowly finding our rhythm again. Brent starts physical therapy this week and is getting stronger every day! He can move his fingers a bit and tends to have the most control in the mornings. Singing has actually helped him gain a lotāmusic is magic like that. We truly believe heāll be back to full strength soon.
This weekend, Anne and I are starting the long-awaited shower build here at the campground. While Brent *says* heās fine using the Planet Fitness showers alone, Iām just not ready for that risk while heās still recovering. Weāve got most of what we need and water delivery lined up. Once itās done, itāll be available for us and campers (with a small fee to cover propane and water).

Here at **Ka-Hoon Campground**, weāre tucked away just far enough to enjoy peaceful desert life, yet still close enough to civilization to grab tacos when the craving hits. But even in this semi-remote slice of paradise, we get **invaders**āand not the alien kind. Weāre talking about the **free-range cattle** who apparently think *our grass is greener*.
Last night, these rogue bovines made a stealthy entrance, clearly plotting an elaborate heist. Step one? **Take out the security system**. We caught them red-tonguedālicking and blocking the cameras like seasoned pros. Step two? **Steal the grass**, leave a little *”thank you”* manure, knock over our solar lights for good measure, and give the poles a good rub while theyāre at it.
