A Week of Fun, Friends, and Music
This past week has been a whirlwind of activity! Brent’s birthday was on Wednesday, and we decided to celebrate with friends by heading into Albuquerque for some Karaoke fun. It was a casual, lighthearted evening filled with laughter, good music, and a great way to unwind.
While planning the outing, our friends mentioned needing help transporting a BBQ grill and a bike back home. Initially, we considered handling it during our trip on Saturday for the **Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band** show at Black Wall Arts and Production Black Wall Arts & Productions (doors at 6 PM, $10 tickets!). But since we were already in that part of town on Wednesday, we made it part of the evening plans.
Our stop for the night ended up being ** Bossfight Brewing Company **. It was our first time there, and we loved the small, friendly atmosphere. Brent and I aren’t big drinkers, and we always prioritize safety, so I told Brent I’d drive so he could enjoy himself. However, our friends offered to be the designated drivers, and after trying the **Watermelon Cider**, I happily took them up on their offer.
Let me just say, that Watermelon Cider was a game-changer for me. I typically don’t like the taste of alcohol, but this drink was a pleasant surprise. I ended up enjoying three of them! Brent found a favorite of his own with the **Black Magic Lager** and is already planning a return trip to grab a growler.
The night was made even more memorable thanks to DJ Tobbyriffic , who went above and beyond. When he learned it was Brent’s birthday, he got the entire crowd to join in singing “Happy Birthday.” Watching Brent enjoy himself, singing, and soaking in the moment was the highlight of the night. Even though he wasn’t performing as **Advocatus Diaboli**, it was clear he was in his element.

Brent’s birthday is just around the corner, and this year, Anne surprised us with tickets to see Amigo the Devil—a show we always enjoy. Watching Amigo’s passion on stage reminded me so much of Brent’s (aka Advocatus Diaboli) energy when he’s performing. Brent thrives on the joy of connecting with his audience, hearing them sing along, laugh, and share in the love of music.
I’ll admit, I’m not the biggest music person (which might sound odd given that I live in a house filled with it). For me, the magic is in watching the performers and the crowd—their reactions, their passion, the shared moments. Performers who truly love what they do bring an unmatched energy to the stage, and it’s a joy to witness.
Over the years, I’ve had the chance to see some iconic bands live: Rob Zombie, KISS, Judas Priest, Metallica, to name a few. While some of these performances were filled with raw passion, others felt more like just another show. The big-name draw might make the experience worthwhile, but without that spark of genuine love for the craft, it can leave something to be desired.
That’s why I’m always excited about performers like Amigo the Devil—and, of course, Brent and the Grim Leafer Band. Their dedication to their art and their audience is evident in every note, every lyric, and every laugh they share on stage.

**Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band: Behind the Scenes of a Rainy, Hectic Day**
As many of you know, we have a unique band: **Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band**. This one-of-a-kind group features Advocatus Diaboli, Shamshini, and the animatronic Grim Leafers—Blunt, Roach, and Spliff. Our performances are a blend of parodies, original songs, and covers, with a motto that captures our essence: *”Advocatus Diaboli: Touring from venue to venue, gathering the souls of musicians and music lovers alike!”*
This past Saturday, we had the pleasure of playing at **Tractor Brewing Company Westside** in Albuquerque. The venue may have been small, but the energy was big! The crowd was welcoming, and although we didn’t have the chance to taste the local food, it certainly looked and smelled delicious.
However, the day leading up to the show was anything but smooth. The heavy rain made it hectic from the start. Our sound guy’s car needed a jump-start in the downpour, and later someone asked if we could haul their belongings into town. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the space, and since we were already battling flooded roads, I wasn’t about to let Brent load things in the rain, especially right before our show!
Determined not to cancel, we decided to leave early and book a hotel room in Albuquerque. The 11-mile drive through the desert’s dirt roads, now transformed into flooded paths, took over an hour. At one point, the water was as high as the trailer doors! Thankfully, we’d wrapped all of our PA equipment and animatronics in tarps, which kept everything dry and protected.
Once we arrived in Albuquerque, we barely had time to check into the hotel before heading over to Tractor Brewing to set up. We brought more PA gear than necessary, but it’s always better to have too much than too little. We quickly realized that using the subs would have rattled the windows, so we made adjustments. After the setup, we dashed back to the hotel for quick showers and returned just in time for the performance.
Despite the whirlwind of challenges, the show went off without a hitch! If you missed it, don’t worry—**Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band** will be back in action on **Nov 1 at Red Gorilla Studios** for the **October 32nd Dance of the Dead**!

Good Wednesday morning! The temperatures here have been quite pleasant, which makes it easier to focus on rehearsals. Yesterday, we spent most of the day in the studio, working on some new material and fine-tuning the animatronics. Of course, life brought its usual interruptions, making it a longer-than-expected session—over 4 hours of rehearsing!
I’ve always enjoyed rehearsals, even when they run long. We’re constantly pushing the show to the next level, not just musically but in terms of performance, timing, and the overall atmosphere. Each rehearsal brings us closer to enhancing every aspect of the show, from our song list to how the animatronics interact. We’re particularly excited to introduce a couple of new songs to our set in the upcoming performances, blending parody, original pieces, and our unique band dynamic.
