Dealing with the winds while living in the New Mexico desert

March 3, 2024 Ka-Hoon Campground

One of the hardest parts of living offgrid in the New Mexico deserts is dealing with the winds. We don’t have any natural protection from the winds. With limited water, poor soil for growing trees, and shrubs is hard. We do have plans for planting but not ready due to having to haul water.
Many people have questioned us about the steps and the Hut and the Dusty Nail General Store. These straps are to secure them during the winds. We have had the wind blow both little buildings over and move them across the yard. We’ve had a full sheet 4×8 ft OSB get air born and fly well over 200 feet. Spring is usually the worst for the winds. We tend to stay inside (unless you like the taste of sand, and it is invading places it shouldn’t) myself, my sinuses swell up.
It can be deceiving as it’s sunny, warm, and looks very inviting to just hang outside.

Mysteries of the West Mesa

We have a new addition to the Mysteries of the West Mesa Series.

Ghostly presence

We’ve been told that this part of the West Mesa is a sacred place with ancient temples and spirits.
While living out here, we have experienced many weird and unexplainable things.

Here is one such experience…

During Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim leafers rehearsal Anne and I had been asked to grab
a few things from the RV.

We both had been standing inside, talking and laughing about what had been said during the rehearsal.

Suddenly, the RV door slowly opened to the point that someone could have walked in, then mysteriously closed
on its own.

We thought someone was messing with us,
but we could hear the rehearsal still going on.

Cats visit Dusty Nail General Store

The last couple days we haven’t been able to accomplish much. With Drs appointments (Othropedic and Podiatrist),I’ve been having hip and foot pains for over a year, finally got it checked out. Just need better shoes which caused foot pain and Bursitis in the hip. Got inserts for shoes, cortisone shot in hip and doing better. Did get asked multiple times why I waited so long.. Only answer I’m stubborn and don’t like seeing Drs.
We also had 2 days of high winds and sand storms. Which made good days for Drs appointments.

Are we doing the right thing?

February 25, 2024 Ka-Hoon Campground

Sometimes, We ask ourselves are we doing the right thing by being here? Then something happens that shows us we are. Here, recently, we have been questioning ourselves about that question. The last couple of days, we’ve had little things happen that slowed us. We are supposed to be here.
We were sitting inside the RV talking about this vary topic. When we saw a coyote run by, stop turned his head and watch us. We weren’t sure how to take this, few days later again deep into this same conversation a little bird perched itself on the ledge of the RV.
When we first moved here, there really wasn’t much for wild life, birds. We now have birds, even the occasional Antelope. That are here because we have slowed down hunting, gave birds a safe place to perch. (There had been more trees here, until most where harvested).
Then today we got a memory of our past life.
I feel we are on the right path and our dream of preserving this land, yet give a safe place for all people to come.
