From Tiny House to Off-Grid Life đŸŒ” Our First Step Toward Ka-Hoon Campground!

From Tiny House to Off-Grid Desert Life | Our First Art of Tiny Living Video

This vault video takes us back to the very beginning of *Art of Tiny Living*. Long before Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center came to life, we were documenting our journey in a small semi off-grid tiny house in Minnesota.

We had lived part-time in the tiny home for a couple of years before going full-time for three more. The house was unique—it started as a retired fish house purchased from a resort, then transformed into our cozy cabin. We hauled our water, used a porta potty, but had electricity. With repairs, painting, and some building, it became our first real step toward an off-grid lifestyle.

When it came time to move to New Mexico, hauling it wasn’t cost-effective, so we sold the home to the Environmental Center where we worked. Today, it serves as a guest house and staff quarters.

On October 18, 2020, we officially arrived in New Mexico to begin our new chapter. Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center is now our home, our passion, and the heart of our story.

Sit back, enjoy this throwback video, and follow along as we share more vault videos of our journey from tiny home living to desert off-grid adventures.

Our Last Visit Before Moving Off-Grid | Starting Life on 5 Acres in New Mexico!

From Dreams to Reality: Our Last Visit to the Land Before Moving to New Mexico

Back in January 2020, we purchased our 5 acres of land here in New Mexico. At that time, we knew the journey wasn’t over—we still had to return to Minnesota, finish working at the center for the summer, pack up our lives, and prepare for the big move.

This video from our vault captures our very last visit to the property before heading back north. Looking back now, it’s fascinating to see the land before anything was set up, before the campground and event center, before the community that has grown around Ka-Hoon.

In the video, we mention the mountains in the area—but since then, we’ve learned we were mistaken about which ones we were looking at. It’s a reminder that this whole adventure has been a learning experience, step by step.

Throughout October, we’re sharing more of these “vault” videos, each one a snapshot of our journey. Some are from before we made the move, and some from after. It’s our way of showing the progress, the challenges, and the growth that brought us to where we are today.

Whether you’ve been following our journey from the beginning or just discovered us now, we invite you to join us each day as we share more from our archive. And if you’d like to see where we are today, make sure to follow our TikTok livestreams, YouTube channel, and check out our website for camping and event info.

From Trailer to Toilet: Our Desert Campground Build from the Video Vault!

From Vault to Desert: Our Compost Toilet Adventure at Ka-Hoon Campground

Out here at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center, every project has a story—and some of those stories are hiding in our video vault! Throughout October, we’ll be sharing older videos from our **Plateau Hame De Colquhoun YouTube channel** to give you a peek at our journey moving to New Mexico.

You may also remember our older channel name, *Art of Tiny Living*. While that chapter helped define our beginnings, we’ve since grown into something bigger—rooted in music, events, camping, and desert life.

This featured video shows us moving the hut (our compost toilet building) from the trailer it was attached to, into its new place where it would eventually serve as the **compost toilet** for campers, visitors, and event-goers. It’s one of those “make it work” projects that shaped the campground as it is today.

If you’re curious about **off-grid living, unique camping experiences, or just want a to see some of our early projects**, you’ll want to watch this one!

How One Container Changed Everything at Ka-Hoon Campground!

When we had the Bluemoon container delivered, it changed everything! 🚛 This was our very first container, and since we didn’t have the equipment to move it where we planned, it became the deciding factor for how we set everything up at Ka-Hoon Campground.

Desert Roads Flooded After Just a Few Drops of Rain! Free-Range Cattle Loving It đŸŒ§đŸ„

Desert Rains Bring Surprising Floods Near Ka-Hoon Campground

Out here in the desert, it doesn’t take much rain to change the landscape. Over the last couple of days, we’ve had a little rain at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center—but not much at all. Just a few miles north of us, though, the roads told a different story.

Check out the video to see a few flooded spots, including one where free-range cattle were happily wading through the water. It’s amazing how such a small amount of rain can cause puddles, washouts, and mud across the mesa.

That’s desert life—one moment it’s dry and dusty, and the next, the roads are soaked. Even if we don’t get much on our end, the surrounding areas can flood quickly, and it can take a few days before the roads fully dry out.

Living off-grid in the New Mexico desert means embracing these surprises. From music echoing at Ka-Hoon Campground to cattle enjoying rainwater pools, the mesa is always full of unexpected beauty.

You Won’t Believe What We Found with a Blacklight After Our Desert Music Show!

Desert Nights: Finding Scorpions with a Blacklight After Music in the Desert

Life in the desert is always full of surprises. After wrapping up **Thursday night’s Music in the Desert livestream** here at **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**, curiosity got the better of me. I decided to take out a blacklight to see if I could spot any desert scorpions.

We don’t usually see them around, but the desert has a way of revealing its secrets when you least expect it. Sure enough, under the soft glow of the blacklight, I found a couple of scorpions shining with their eerie, fluorescent glow. It was fascinating to see how these desert creatures light up at night, a reminder of how much life is hidden just beneath the surface.

Many people worry when they hear the word *scorpion*, but out here they really don’t bother much. They tend to keep to themselves, blending into the desert sands. Catching sight of them with the blacklight was more of a scientific curiosity and a chance to share the unique experiences of **off-grid desert living**.

Whether it’s **live music under the stars, camping off-grid, or stumbling across glowing scorpions**, Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center is full of unforgettable experiences. Every day brings something new, and every night holds a little mystery.

If you’ve ever wanted to see what off-grid desert life is like, join us for our **TikTok livestreams every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday** on our Colquhoun Entertainment profile. From music to wildlife, you never know what adventure the desert will bring next.

đŸ”„ Camp, Music & Movies in the Desert – You’ve NEVER Seen Nights Like This at Ka-Hoon Campground! đŸŒ™

Camping Fun, Music, and Movie Nights at Ka-Hoon Campground đŸŽ¶đŸ”„đŸŽŹ

Camping at **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center** isn’t just about pitching a tent and swatting mosquitoes (though we do have the desert version of those). Here, camping comes with a *side of laughter, live music, bonfires, and even movies under the stars.*

Imagine this: You’re sitting around a glowing bonfire, marshmallow in one hand, maybe a cold drink in the other, and suddenly you hear the sound of **Advocatus Diaboli** rocking the desert air. That’s right—our off-grid campground turns into a stage every **Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday night**. Music, laughter, and a lot of fun echo across the mesa.

And we don’t stop at music. Nope. We bring the movies outdoors, too! On **October 11th**, grab a seat (or a lawn chair if you’re smart enough to bring one) for a double feature—**Beetlejuice 1 and 2** projected under the wide desert sky. Who needs a movie theater when you’ve got popcorn, stars, and just enough creepy desert silence to make Beetlejuice feel *extra real*?

But wait, there’s more
On **November 1st**, we’re taking things up a notch. Join us for a **night of dancing around the bonfire**, where you’ll draw your intentions, goals, or things you’re ready to change in the sand, and then stomp them into the desert ground! Therapeutic, symbolic, and a little bit hilarious if your “stomp” looks more like an off-beat dance move (don’t worry, nobody’s judging).

At Ka-Hoon, we believe camping should be memorable—not just for the stars above, but for the memories you make with others around the fire. Whether you come for the music, the movies, or just the peace of the desert, you’ll leave with a story worth telling.

So, grab your tent, your sense of humor, and maybe some extra-long marshmallow sticks—we’ve got the music, the movies, and the fire waiting for you!

The Secret Spirit of LadrĂłn Peak 🌄 | The Lady of the Mountain Prayer Mystery

The Lady of the Mountain: LadrĂłn Peak & a Prayer at Ka-Hoon

A few years back, during one of our events at **Ka-Hoon Campground & Event Center**, a woman from a local Indigenous tribe blessed us with a prayer. She spoke to **“the Lady of the Mountain,”** honoring **Ladrón Peak** in her words. I regret not grasping the full legend then, but it’s held with me ever since — a reminder of spirits, respect, and stories rooted in the land.

I believe every belief system deserves respect. For me, there’s no “wrong” faith when it uplifts, heals, and connects us to the land. I tried searching for details of that prayer and the legend behind the “Lady of the Mountain,” but came up short.

Here’s what I found so far on Ladrón Peak, and some leads I hope someone reading this might help fill in:

* LadrĂłn Peak is in **Socorro County, New Mexico**, part of the **Sierra Ladrones** range. ([Wikipedia][1])
* Its name “Ladrón” means “thief.” The Sierra Ladrones were reportedly used as hideouts by raiding parties and rustlers over time, giving the range its name. ([Wikipedia][1])
* The peak is geologically an **igneous intrusion** of **Precambrian granite** — not a volcano — and rises sharply above the valley below. ([Wikipedia][1])
* In local folklore and treasure-tales, Ladrón Peak is associated with hidden treasures, “bad magic,” and spirit guarding. For example, one story involves a curandera marking a “X” on the peak, warning that evil spirits guard treasure beneath a boulder struck by lightning. ([Chronicles][2])

I would love to hear your versions: has anyone in your family or tribe ever shared a version of the “Lady of the Mountain” prayer or a related story tied to Ladrón? If you’ve heard details, please reach out — we’d be honored to record and share them (with permission).

Until then, when you look toward Ladrón from our land, know that people have walked here for millennia, seeing more than just rock and sky — seeing spirits, stories, and memory.
