Mysteries of the West Mesa “Empty Chair “

Mysteries of the West Mesa

“The Empty Chair”

Here on the Mesa, there is a  story about a man from 1800s who used to hunt the mesa and was killed during one of his hunts.

It is said that if you leave an empty chair while sitting around the fire. That this man would first appear as an animal, then turn back into a man, and come sit with you around the fire.

One dark night, while sitting around the fire with neighbors, we had left one chair empty.

When suddenly a white cat ran between us, under the empty chair, before disappearing into the darkness of night.

At the time, we had no cats.

Was the cat the ghost of the man, stray cat? Or something else?

Rainy Days while Living off-grid

Dealing with rainy days as a child living on a dairy farm in rural Minnesota meant muddy cattle, little extra work cleaning the barn, flooded/washed out roads. But it also meant watching movies, sometimes playing a board game,

Raining days while Living off-grid in the desert in New Mexico isn’t a whole lot difference than my experiences while in Minnesota. (Though we don’t have cattle). We have flooded/washed out roads, play board/cards games. But no movies.

The difference is overcast days don’t charge the batteries for the solar much if at all. We can usually handle one over cast day fine, but not 2 or 3 days.

To preserve electric (in case its longer than a day) all non essentials get turned off. Fans, tvs, charging of cell phones are limited. Which means no movies.

We can start up generators, but why waste the gas? So rainy days usually means doing things that doesn’t require electric. Reading, writing, drawing, playing board or card games. Going into town in the truck due to the roads.
