Camping in the New Mexico Desert | RV, Tent & Long Term Camping at Ka-Hoon Campground

Camping in the New Mexico Desert at Ka-Hoon Campground

If you’re searching for unique camping in New Mexico, the open desert landscapes around Ka-Hoon Campground offer an experience that is very different from crowded campgrounds or busy RV parks.

Located at Plateau Hamed e Colquhoun, Ka-Hoon Campground provides a quiet desert environment where travelers can enjoy RV camping, tent camping, vanlife camping, and long-term desert stays surrounded by some of the most beautiful skies in the Southwest.

For campers who want peace, space, and an authentic desert experience, camping in New Mexico’s wide-open landscapes offers something special.

Why New Mexico Desert Camping is Unique

Many people search online for New Mexico camping destinations, but desert camping offers an experience that few places in the United States can match.

Unlike crowded campgrounds or national park campsites that often require reservations months in advance, desert camping in New Mexico provides space, quiet, and incredible natural beauty.

At Ka-Hoon Campground, visitors often say the first thing they notice is the silence of the desert.

During the day, the landscape stretches across miles of open terrain. At night, the sky transforms into a brilliant display of stars rarely seen in cities.

This is one of the reasons RV travelers, vanlifers, and off-grid campers often search for desert campgrounds like this when traveling through the Southwest.

RV Camping in New Mexico Desert Landscapes

Travelers exploring the Southwest frequently search for RV camping in New Mexico, especially locations that allow flexible stays and quiet surroundings.

Ka-Hoon Campground provides a place where RV travelers can stop for a short stay or remain longer while exploring the region.

Unlike traditional RV parks with tightly packed sites, desert camping provides a more relaxed atmosphere where visitors can enjoy:

  • Open desert views
  • Quiet nights away from traffic
  • Beautiful sunsets across the horizon
  • Stargazing in dark desert skies

For many RV travelers, these experiences are exactly why they choose desert RV camping instead of traditional campgrounds.

Tent Camping Under the New Mexico Stars

For those who prefer sleeping closer to nature, tent camping in the New Mexico desert is an unforgettable experience.

Camping under the stars allows visitors to fully experience the natural environment of the Southwest. The desert landscape changes colors throughout the day, from golden sunlight to deep red sunsets and dark blue night skies.

Tent campers at Ka-Hoon Campground often enjoy:

  • Watching desert wildlife
  • Listening to the quiet sounds of nature
  • Relaxing around campfires
  • Experiencing some of the clearest night skies in the region

Long Term RV Camping in New Mexico

Many travelers searching online are not only looking for short trips. Some are searching for long-term RV camping in New Mexico while traveling, working remotely, or exploring the Southwest.

Ka-Hoon Campground offers flexible camping options for those who want to stay longer and experience the desert environment at a slower pace.

Long-term campers often include:

  • Remote workers
  • Travelers exploring the Southwest
  • Vanlife travelers
  • Seasonal campers
  • Artists and writers seeking quiet inspiration

The peaceful desert atmosphere provides a unique setting where people can relax, work remotely, or simply take time away from crowded urban environments.

Vanlife Camping in the New Mexico Desert

In recent years, vanlife travel has become increasingly popular. Many vanlifers search for places that allow them to park safely, enjoy nature, and meet other travelers.

Ka-Hoon Campground welcomes vanlife travelers looking for a quiet and scenic place to stay.

Vanlife campers often enjoy:

  • Wide open desert views
  • Beautiful sunsets and sunrises
  • Stargazing opportunities
  • Meeting other travelers around campfires

The relaxed atmosphere makes the campground an ideal stop for people exploring New Mexico desert travel routes.

Desert Sunsets and Night Skies

One of the most memorable parts of camping in the desert is the sky.

During the evening, the horizon fills with shades of red, orange, and purple as the sun sets across the landscape. After dark, the desert sky becomes filled with stars.

Because the area is far from major cities, campers often experience dark skies that reveal thousands of stars, something many travelers rarely see.

For photographers, stargazers, and anyone who enjoys peaceful nights outdoors, this environment creates unforgettable moments.

Community Events and Outdoor Experiences

Camping at Ka-Hoon Campground isn’t only about solitude. At times, visitors can also enjoy relaxed community activities that bring campers together.

Depending on the season, these activities may include:

  • Outdoor movie nights
  • Campfire gatherings
  • Live desert music
  • Storytelling and travel conversations

These moments help create a sense of community among travelers passing through the desert.

Many campers say that the conversations and friendships formed around campfires become one of the most memorable parts of their stay.

Wildlife and Desert Nature

Camping in the New Mexico desert also brings visitors closer to the unique wildlife that calls the region home.

While exploring the area, campers sometimes encounter:

  • Horned lizards
  • Desert birds
  • Small mammals
  • Unique desert plants

Observing these animals in their natural environment reminds visitors that the desert is full of life, even in places that appear quiet and empty.

A Different Kind of Camping Experience

Many people searching for camping in New Mexico are looking for something different than crowded parks or tourist locations.

Desert camping provides a slower pace and a stronger connection to nature.

Instead of busy roads and packed campsites, visitors experience:

  • Quiet landscapes
  • Natural desert beauty
  • Endless skies
  • Relaxed camping environments

For travelers who want something more peaceful, these qualities make desert camping truly special.

Whether you’re planning a short road trip or searching for a longer desert stay, Ka-Hoon Campground at Plateau Hamed e Colquhoun offers a welcoming place to experience the beauty of the New Mexico desert.

Travelers from across the country visit the region to experience the landscapes, the quiet nights, and the unforgettable skies that make this area so unique.

From Trailer to Toilet: Our Desert Campground Build from the Video Vault!

From Vault to Desert: Our Compost Toilet Adventure at Ka-Hoon Campground

Out here at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center, every project has a story—and some of those stories are hiding in our video vault! Throughout October, we’ll be sharing older videos from our **Plateau Hame De Colquhoun YouTube channel** to give you a peek at our journey moving to New Mexico.

You may also remember our older channel name, *Art of Tiny Living*. While that chapter helped define our beginnings, we’ve since grown into something bigger—rooted in music, events, camping, and desert life.

This featured video shows us moving the hut (our compost toilet building) from the trailer it was attached to, into its new place where it would eventually serve as the **compost toilet** for campers, visitors, and event-goers. It’s one of those “make it work” projects that shaped the campground as it is today.

If you’re curious about **off-grid living, unique camping experiences, or just want a to see some of our early projects**, you’ll want to watch this one!

How One Container Changed Everything at Ka-Hoon Campground!

When we had the Bluemoon container delivered, it changed everything! 🚛 This was our very first container, and since we didn’t have the equipment to move it where we planned, it became the deciding factor for how we set everything up at Ka-Hoon Campground.

The Secret Spirit of Ladrón Peak 🌄 | The Lady of the Mountain Prayer Mystery

The Lady of the Mountain: Ladrón Peak & a Prayer at Ka-Hoon

A few years back, during one of our events at **Ka-Hoon Campground & Event Center**, a woman from a local Indigenous tribe blessed us with a prayer. She spoke to **“the Lady of the Mountain,”** honoring **Ladrón Peak** in her words. I regret not grasping the full legend then, but it’s held with me ever since — a reminder of spirits, respect, and stories rooted in the land.

I believe every belief system deserves respect. For me, there’s no “wrong” faith when it uplifts, heals, and connects us to the land. I tried searching for details of that prayer and the legend behind the “Lady of the Mountain,” but came up short.

Here’s what I found so far on Ladrón Peak, and some leads I hope someone reading this might help fill in:

* Ladrón Peak is in **Socorro County, New Mexico**, part of the **Sierra Ladrones** range. ([Wikipedia][1])
* Its name “Ladrón” means “thief.” The Sierra Ladrones were reportedly used as hideouts by raiding parties and rustlers over time, giving the range its name. ([Wikipedia][1])
* The peak is geologically an **igneous intrusion** of **Precambrian granite** — not a volcano — and rises sharply above the valley below. ([Wikipedia][1])
* In local folklore and treasure-tales, Ladrón Peak is associated with hidden treasures, “bad magic,” and spirit guarding. For example, one story involves a curandera marking a “X” on the peak, warning that evil spirits guard treasure beneath a boulder struck by lightning. ([Chronicles][2])

I would love to hear your versions: has anyone in your family or tribe ever shared a version of the “Lady of the Mountain” prayer or a related story tied to Ladrón? If you’ve heard details, please reach out — we’d be honored to record and share them (with permission).

Until then, when you look toward Ladrón from our land, know that people have walked here for millennia, seeing more than just rock and sky — seeing spirits, stories, and memory.

The desert holds a unique kind of magic. The wide-open spaces create room for reflection, while the endless horizon reminds us that there’s always more to explore. Desert Floods Can’t Stop the Weird! Muddy July 4th & the Launch of a Booking Agency for Misfits

**Muddy Roads & Musical Oddities: A July 4th Update from the Desert**

We hope everyone had a fun, safe, and meaningful Fourth of July!

Out here in the New Mexico desert, it was a wet and wild one. We got just over an inch of rain, which might not sound like much—until you try to drive 11 miles of dirt roads in it. It was muddy, sloppy, and several sections flooded quickly. One camper transferred their stay, but a few brave souls still made the journey (thank you!). By evening, most of the **bypass routes** around the deep puddles had dried up, and things became much more manageable.

Life off-grid means always being prepared for the unpredictable—and rolling with it when the monsoon season hits.

### Introducing: **Melodie’s Oddities Music Booking**

In other exciting news, I’ve officially launched **Melodie’s Oddities**—a small, independent music booking venture that was born from personal experience and necessity.

As many of you know, we have a very unique act: **Advocatus Diaboli and the Grim Leafer Band**, a darkly humorous live performance blending **animatronics, original songs, parodies, and theatrical storytelling.** It’s weird, wild, and unlike anything else out there.

The challenge? Most traditional booking agents didn’t know what to do with us. If you weren’t country, rock, or something they already understood, they didn’t bite. So after handling all the outreach myself for months—researching venues, building promo materials, and sending emails—I realized something important:

> *Maybe there’s a place for the “too weird” acts. And maybe I could help create it.*

I’m not a full-time agent. I don’t cold call. I’m not a music industry insider. But I *am* someone who saw a gap and decided to fill it. And that’s where **Melodie’s Oddities** began.

Right now, I focus on **email-based venue outreach** and support for artists who don’t fit the usual mold—acts that are **dark, unique, offbeat, or theatrical**, especially those who haven’t found traditional industry support. If that sounds like your band or project, reach out. I may not have all the answers, but I care deeply about helping strange, amazing music find its stage.

### Building Something Different

So while the roads may be muddy out here, we’re still moving forward. Whether it’s launching an odd little booking project, planning upcoming shows for Advocatus Diaboli, or drying out the campground after another monsoon, we’re always building something a little different.

Because out here—weird is welcome.
