Surviving Desert Winds and Cold—Off-Grid Living Challenges and Solutions!

**Desert Weather Challenges: Wind, Cold, and Staying Prepared**

Over the past few days, the **weather forecast** predicted **high winds** and **cold temperatures**. We made sure to **notify our members and campers** about the potential weather conditions so everyone could be prepared.

Fortunately, the winds didn’t hit as hard as predicted, but we still experienced **strong gusts**—enough to send **tumbleweeds rolling** across the campground. Along with the winds came **cold temperatures**, but we managed to **stay warm inside**, even after **turning off the heat overnight**.

### **Clouds, Cold, and the Chance of Snow**
The changing weather also brought in **cloud cover** and the **possibility of snow**, leaving us **limited on outdoor activities** for now. Living **off-grid** means always keeping an eye on the weather and being ready to **adjust plans** when conditions change.

### **Staying Prepared**
While the weather can be unpredictable, having a **warm and cozy space** to retreat to makes all the difference. Whether it’s **wind, snow, or cold**, we’re always prepared to **weather the storm** and make the most of life **off-grid**.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to **navigate off-grid living challenges** and share tips for **staying prepared in any weather**!

Off-Grid RV Repairs: Fixing Power Cord Issues in the Desert!

**Off-Grid Living: Power Cord Repairs and Troubleshooting Electrical Issues**

Yesterday, we tackled an important repair—**replacing the end of our RV power cord**. With **football starting at 10 AM** and company coming over to watch, the only time we had to make the fix was **early in the morning**. Despite a **chilly 30-degree temperature** (which our **Minnesota friends and family** would probably call warm), we got it done, and the RV is now **back up and running**.

### **What Caused the Issue?**
The big question—what caused the power cord problem in the first place?

After discussing it with a **licensed electrician friend**, we learned it could have been caused by several factors:
– **Faulty manufacturing** – The plug might have been defective from the start.
– **Physical damage** – It may have been **snagged or pulled loose**, possibly by **cattle, dogs, or cats** wandering around.
– **Wear and tear** – Over time, connections can break down and lead to shorts.
– **Environmental factors** – **Moisture, dust, or sand** could have gotten into the plug, creating a short. Living in the **desert**, it’s no surprise that **sand gets everywhere**.

In the end, we couldn’t pinpoint one single cause—it might have been **one or a combination** of these possibilities.

### **Lessons Learned**
– Regularly **inspect electrical connections** for damage or signs of wear.
– Keep connections as **sealed and protected** as possible, especially in **dusty or humid environments**.
– Always have **backup parts** available to make quick repairs when living off-grid.

### **Final Thoughts**
While off-grid living comes with its **challenges**, it also builds **resilience** and **problem-solving skills**. We’re glad this fix was relatively simple, and we’re back to enjoying **power in the RV** without relying on the generator.

Stay tuned as we continue sharing updates about **off-grid repairs, challenges, and solutions**!

Off-Grid Solar Power Struggles: RV Repairs, Sandstorms & Solar!”

**Off-Grid Living: Repairs, Sandstorms, and Solar Power Adjustments**

It’s Sunday, and after battling high winds and a **red flag warning** yesterday, we’re finally ready to repair the RV—assuming the winds calm down as predicted. Yesterday’s **sandstorm** made it impossible to work outside, but today looks more promising for getting the **new parts installed** and fixing the **shore power connection**.

### **Temporary Adjustments While Waiting on Repairs**
With no power in the RV, we’ve been spending our evenings in the **Greenroom**. It’s been a cozy alternative, giving us access to power for **watching TV, charging devices**, and staying comfortable without needing to run the **generator** in the RV.

Interestingly, we’ve also confirmed that **staying up later** and running electronics in the RV was a major factor in draining the **solar power system**. Thankfully, our system shuts down at **50% battery capacity**, which prevents a complete drain. Still, it’s a reminder of how easy it is to **overload off-grid systems** when schedules or habits change.

### **Battling Dust and Wind Challenges**
Today’s repairs depend heavily on the **wind conditions**. If the winds stay calm, we’ll tackle the repairs and hopefully restore the RV’s power connection. I’d love to capture some **videos or photos** during the process—if the dust isn’t too bad. Unfortunately, high winds and **dust storms** don’t agree with me. They cause **swelling and allergies**, which means I probably **should wear a mask** (even though I hate them!).

### **A Glimpse of Off-Grid Living**
Yesterday’s trip back from **Albuquerque** was a classic example of **desert living**—enough wind to send **sand and tumbleweeds** tumbling across the interstate. It’s moments like this that remind us of both the beauty and challenges of living off-grid in the **New Mexico desert**.

### **Final Thoughts**
Living off-grid comes with unexpected twists—from **solar system hiccups** to **weather delays**—but it also builds resilience and resourcefulness. We’ll share updates once the RV repairs are done and let you know how everything is working afterward.

Stay tuned for **videos and photos** (wind permitting) as we continue navigating the ups and downs of **off-grid life**!

Off-Grid Living Struggles: Troubleshooting Solar Power Issues

Living off-grid offers freedom and sustainability, but it also comes with its share of challenges—especially when it comes to maintaining power. Over the past month, we’ve been dealing with a frustrating issue—our **solar power system hasn’t been lasting through the night**.

We initially checked everything—**solar panels, batteries, charge controller, and inverter**—and even made sure nothing extra was running or plugged in. Despite our efforts, we couldn’t find the source of the problem.

### **Was It Increased Power Usage?**
Since Anne has been working late nights, we thought maybe our extended use of lights, TV, and other electronics while waiting to pick her up was the culprit. Running more power after dark could have been enough to drain the system faster than usual.

### **The Real Problem Revealed**
Yesterday, we may have finally uncovered the real issue. After returning home from dropping Anne off, we sat down for dinner only to realize the **power had shut down**. Oddly enough, the **sun was still out**, but the **solar system was completely drained**. It even displayed a **low battery warning** indicating it had **pulled more power than it was generating**.

Upon further inspection, we found the **power cord going into the RV was burnt**, melting part of the cord and **burning the shore plug** on the RV. What’s strange is that this cord was plugged into a **30-amp outlet with its own breaker**, yet the breaker didn’t trip.

### **Expert Advice and Safety Precautions**
We reached out to an electrician friend for advice through a video call. He suggested the issue was likely caused by a **slow but steady power draw**, which wasn’t enough to trip the breaker but was still strong enough to **drain the solar system**.

Thankfully, a **major catastrophe was avoided**. However, the damage left us needing replacements. While we thought we had spare parts to fix the issue immediately, it turned out we had the **wrong connectors**. As a result, the RV is currently **unplugged** until the **new parts arrive**.

### **Next Steps: Repairs and Improvements**
We’re now in the process of replacing both the **power cord** and the **shore power plug** on the RV to ensure everything is safe and functional. We’re also considering additional **system upgrades** to prevent similar issues in the future.

This experience has been a reminder that **off-grid living requires constant monitoring and maintenance**. It’s not always easy, but staying proactive can help avoid bigger problems down the road.

We’ll know in the coming days if the replacements solve the issue—and we’ll be sure to share an update soon!

**If you’re living off-grid or thinking about it, let us know about your experiences and tips for troubleshooting solar power problems.**

Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center—Where Highland Spirit Meets Desert Serenity.

Colquhoun, pronounced *Ka-Hoon,* bears the proud legacy of one of Scotland’s ancient clans. The timeless phrase, *“I am in cahoots with someone,”* finds its roots in the bonds of kinship forged by the Colquhouns. Why share this tale? Because here at Ka-Hoon, we honor our Scottish heritage through every stone and flame. From the **Bothy Kitchen** to the **Hearth**—our grand firepit—and the **Cahoots Courtyard**, our grounds echo with the spirit of camaraderie and tradition.

This year, we set forth to weave even more threads of Scottish culture into the fabric of our desert haven. So gather ye clans, wanderers, and wayfarers—raise a cup, share a tale, and let the echoes of history guide your journey at Ka-Hoon!

Celebrate New Year’s Eve with Celtic Vibes, Bonfires, and Serenity in the Desert Wilderness!

Hail and Blessings Upon This New Year’s Eve!

Gather round, kindred spirits, as the wheel of the year turns once more. With hearts full of hope and gratitude, we bid farewell to the old and welcome the new, under the vast desert skies that shelter our humble haven. May this night find you warm, safe, and surrounded by the flicker of hearth and heart.

Here at **Plateau Hame de Colquhoun**, our plans for this eve are simple, yet steeped in the spirit of the season. A few wayfarers shall join us, their wagons resting upon our lands for a time. Should the winds be kind and the stars shine bright, we may kindle a bonfire, letting its glow chase away the shadows and invite merriment into the night.

Though the echoes of laughter may drift through the stillness, there is a certain solitude that lingers here—a quiet that speaks to the soul. We cherish this peace, yet our hearts remain ever open to kind company and shared stories. For what is life without fellowship?

Even as the flames dance and the night hums with ancient whispers, we find ourselves reflecting on the balance of solitude and connection. The desert’s serenity is our sanctuary, yet the warmth of shared laughter and song stirs something timeless within us.

So, as the hour draws nigh and the old year bows to the new, we raise a toast to each of you—those near and far, seen and unseen. May your path be bright, your burdens light, and your hearts ever full.

**Sláinte and Blessed Be!**

5 Years Off-Grid – Building Dreams at Ka-Hoon Campground in the Desert

Celebrating 5 Years at Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center – A Desert Dream Realized

January 3rd marks the 5-year anniversary of purchasing our land—a milestone that reminds us just how far we’ve come. What started as a dream to create a peaceful getaway, far removed from the noise and chaos of daily life, has blossomed into a haven for nature lovers, adventurers, and those simply seeking a place to be themselves.

A Vision Turned Reality

When we first set eyes on this land, we had no idea how or when we’d bring our vision to life. We wanted more than just a campground—we dreamed of a place where visitors could truly connect with nature, find serenity, and embrace community. Now, after years of dedication and hard work, the land is ready to welcome those looking for a break from the ordinary.

Ka-Hoon Campground isn’t just about pitching a tent for a quick overnight stay—it’s about experiencing the desert’s raw beauty, hiking the rugged terrain, gathering around campfires, and enjoying peaceful solitude. Whether guests seek community or privacy, we’ve designed the space to offer both.

Challenges Along the Way

Of course, no journey is without its challenges. One of our biggest hurdles has been the roads leading out here. To preserve the tranquility and privacy we envisioned, the campground had to be off the beaten path—and that means navigating 11 miles of washboard dirt roads with narrow passages and dips.

We’ve gone to great lengths to prepare visitors for this adventure. From bold warnings on our website, highlighted boxes, and detailed descriptions to videos showcasing the roads, we strive to ensure everyone knows what to expect. Despite these efforts, we still get calls and messages from guests who feel blindsided.

The website description itself reads:
“Accessible via 11 miles of dirt roads, the journey to Ka-Hoon is an adventure in itself, with narrow passages and dips adding to the thrill.”

Yet, we understand that sometimes excitement overshadows preparation, and guests may overlook the warnings. While we do our best to clarify expectations, we also appreciate the adventurous spirits who embrace the journey and see it as part of the experience.

Looking to the Future

As we reflect on the past five years, we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve built. Ka-Hoon Campground continues to evolve, welcoming a variety of guests—from those seeking a quiet escape to others simply passing through for safety and shelter.

While we didn’t originally expect so many one-night stays, we’re honored to provide a safe, welcoming space for everyone who needs it. Whether guests stay for a night or a week, we hope they leave with a sense of peace and connection to the land.

Thank You for Being Part of Our Journey

We want to thank everyone who has supported us over the past five years—our guests, members, and those who’ve embraced the rugged adventure of reaching our desert sanctuary. We look forward to many more years of growth, new faces, and unforgettable memories.

If you’re ready to experience the beauty and serenity of Ka-Hoon Campground, visit our website and start planning your adventure today!

From Rescue to Family – Life with Our Off-Grid Dogs and Their Incredible Journeys!

Life with Our Furry Family – Weillow, Dreugan, and Vibria

At **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**, our furry companions are more than just pets—they’re family. Over the years, we’ve opened our hearts and home to dogs with unique stories, personalities, and challenges. Today, we’d like to share a little more about **Weillow, Dreugan, and Vibria**—three very special members of our pack.

### **Weillow – The Survivor**
Weillow, our **14-year-old Lab mix**, has been with us since she was just **8 weeks old**. When I rescued her, she was **half-starved, terrified, and withdrawn**. Unlike most puppies, Weillow didn’t know how to play or even try. It took a lot of time, patience, and love to help her open up and trust again.

Watching Weillow grow into the loyal and loving dog she is today has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Despite her tough start, she’s been an incredible companion and has shown us what resilience truly looks like.

### **Dreugan – The Protector**
Dreugan, who turns **4 years old on January 1**, is a **Husky-Rottweiler mix**. We found him through a Facebook post about puppies, and Brent decided to surprise me with one for my birthday after we learned that Weillow had cancer.

When we arrived, there were only **two puppies left**. One was outgoing and curious, but the other was shy, hiding, and even nipped at the breeder. Naturally, I gravitated toward the shy one—I knew he’d need extra care and patience, and I wanted to make sure he ended up in the right home.

At only **4 weeks old**, Dreugan was too young to leave his litter, but we knew we had to give him a chance. Raising him hasn’t been easy—he’s **strong, vocal, and has anxiety**. He’s dragged me across parking lots, broken my finger, and even bitten me once (accidentally). But despite the challenges, he’s become an amazing dog—**protective, sensitive, and incredibly loyal**.

Unfortunately, Dreugan has had **five encounters with loose or aggressive dogs**—one even climbed into our car and attacked him. While he’s never started a fight, these incidents have made him **reactive** toward other dogs. We continue to work with him on building trust and confidence, but his journey has taught us a lot about patience and understanding.

### **Vibria – The Rising Star**
Our newest addition, **Vibria**, is a **6-month-old pup** who we think might be a **Heeler mix**. She’s still growing into her personality, but one thing is clear—she’s **smart, quick to learn, and full of energy**.

We’re excited to see how Vibria continues to develop and fit into our off-grid life. She’s already proven to be curious and adventurous, and we can’t wait to watch her personality unfold as she grows.

### **Lessons from Our Dogs**
Living off-grid in the desert brings its challenges, and having dogs here isn’t always easy. But it also brings incredible rewards. Each of our dogs has taught us something valuable—**resilience, patience, loyalty, and trust**. They remind us daily that love and understanding can transform even the most fearful and reactive dogs into happy, confident companions.

If you’re considering adopting or rescuing a dog, we encourage you to be patient and prepared for the challenges, but know that the rewards far outweigh the struggles.

Follow our journey with **Weillow, Dreugan, and Vibria**—and stay updated on life at **Ka-Hoon Campground and Event Center**!
